Nope!! I seriously saw this at a large pet store. The older lady in front of me easily had 30+ cans of cat food. The cashier asked for her ID and pet's information. I asked what that was all about and they told me the elderly eat cat food so they have to track what they buy. Did this store track what you bought? I'm not going to be bold enough to call you a liar but I think this particular version of events is pure/simple BS or possibly VERY misunderstood some way. No store, especially a large chain store, gives a ratz-azz who's eating what as long as it's being paid for. It's the cash they care about, not what Granny's having for a mid-night snack.
~OT~ I love these threads. So many many licensed Psychiatrists here and they are able to diagnose mental illness just by reading a few words in a little white box. Come on now. Owning cats, frogs, snakes, sea monkeys, dogs, donkeys, horses, or a slew of newts is no more a sign of a mental illness than owning a new BMW. Some people are pet people, some are not. Some want more than one, some do not. Who cares? If owning a houseful of cats makes someone happy? The people who are opposed to that can make life very simple: stay away from that person. Problem solved. JMO

| Women with multiple cats - sign of mental illness? Posted: 10/26/2011 5:01:34 PM | Seriously greeneyez...when I lived in a suburb of IL. I haven't seen that happen in an incredibly long time but the girl did say they did it often then. As ridiculous as it sounds, it is reality and I don't go around making up things.
On another note....I tried to respond to you earlier...but some seriously unhappy people who don't know the difference between a discussion and a poll had their way.
So...I'm glad you were able to get enjoyment out of that discussion

| Women with multiple cats - sign of mental illness? Posted: 12/1/2011 5:26:23 PM | | I have five cats. I volunteer with a cat rescue group and I have ten acres. Only two live inside with me, the other three are banished to the outdoors unless the temperatures are freezing. I will not take in any more, I got stuck with the ones I have and when they are gone they are gone. I actually dislike cats. I am probably a CCL, but I just couldn't drop off the kitties at the kill shelter. Over the last five years I have fostered and adopted out fifty-three cats to good homes and I got stuck with three. I think that's pretty good numbers considering. Oh did I mention I have two rescue dogs too? I really think that you have to get to know a person before you decide they are a crazy person because they care for living things. You can really tell a lot about a person by how they treat animals and children. I don't advertise that I have cats, but I am proud of the fact that I am a member of a very successful rescue group in my community. | |

| Women with multiple cats - sign of mental illness? Posted: 12/2/2011 12:20:05 PM | i must be a total nut job then as i have five cats, work at a cat rescue center as a volunteer and am doing an animal care course at college, i have lots of friends whose common link with me is cats, my cats all have thier own personalities, i have victor meldrew in fur, barbie girl, nice but dim tim, the hairy hooligan, and the siamese cross thug, but at the end of the day they ARE CATS not substitute children (have three of those) and if i want to sit on the chair the cat gets shifted, they are not allowed in my bedroom and i clean the litter tray every day so my house does not stink, now theres me thinking i am just a normal person with a normal life who just happends to have cats in her life, but according to you lot who dont like cats maybe i should delete my profile as i have no chance of a date | |

Nope. But you should understand that people who aren't cat lovers may not be interested. You've just restricted your field, that's all.

| Women with multiple cats - sign of mental illness? Posted: 12/2/2011 12:42:59 PM | no i havent restricted my field because i wouldnt want to date someone who dosent like cats and a lot of men on the uk site put pics of themselves holding a cute cat or dog and then in thier details put no pets, so the reason they have the pic with the cute animal is to make themselves look kinder, my ex husband loves cats, dosent like dogs and he cheated on me so on the surface he looked caring but underneath was a phiranha | |

| Women with multiple cats - sign of mental illness? Posted: 12/2/2011 12:54:19 PM | i usually do the thing is people who like animals cant understand people who dont, and people who dont like animals cant understand people who do, so whenever animals are discussed there are two very strong camps, the dos and the donts and never the twain shall meet | |

| Women with multiple cats - sign of mental illness? Posted: 12/2/2011 1:41:39 PM | | It isn’t the fact of animal ownership, even cat ownership, that gives me the heebeejeebees. It’s this whole “treat them like they are my children thing” that gives me the willies. If you’re so lonely that you need surrogate family - you need to get out more. And if you feel your pet(s) is the only entity in the world that reciprocates your feelings of love and affection, you have issues. You’re human, get up, walk on two legs and interact with other humans. | |

| Women with multiple cats - sign of mental illness? Posted: 12/2/2011 1:52:59 PM | They make great bedwarmers when the power is out and I have no heat. And I guarantee you'll never find a... um, alive anyways... mouse in this house.
And any cat owner knows you don't own cats. You're just the unpaid help to make sure the food dish is full and open the door when they want to go out.

This, i fully agree with.
There is nothing wrong with loving & having animals, but the people who do so because they can not forge bonds with other humans, ehhhhh, not my cup of tea. I like animals, but if i want children, i will give birth to children.
I am kind of neautral on animals, i like them, but i dont go ga-ga over them.
I had a dog that i loved very dearly when i was 13, who was killed violently by a coyote that came into our yard. I sometimes think as a result of the pain from losing her, i kind of closed myself off to ever really loving another animal again.
I have been considering crossing over to the pet owner side and getting my children a doggie for Christmas, or for the next birthday that comes up, and allowing myself to love an animal once again.

| Women with multiple cats - sign of mental illness? Posted: 12/2/2011 3:59:16 PM | | I ended a relationship with a woman who had 8 cats. They weren't fixed and they became her entire life. Her parents had 30+ cats, also unfixed. It got a bit too much for me, and I love animals. | |

| Women with multiple cats - sign of mental illness? Posted: 12/2/2011 4:42:15 PM | A little old lady went to the grocery store to buy cat food. She picked up four cans and took them to the check out counter.
The girl at the cash register said, "I'm sorry, but we cannot sell you cat food without proof that you have a cat. A lot of old people buy cat food to eat, and the management wants proof that you are buying the cat food for your cat."
The little old lady went home, picked up her cat and brought it back to the store. They sold her the cat food. The next day, she tried to buy two cans of dog food. Again the cashier said
"I'm sorry, but we cannot sell you dog food without proof that you have a dog. A lot of old people buy dog food to eat, but the management wants proof that you are buying the dog food for your dog."
So she went home and brought in her dog. She then was able to buy the dog food.
The next day she brought in a box with a hole in the lid. The little old lady asked the cashier to stick her finger in the hole. The cashier said, "No, you might have a snake in there." The little old lady assured her that there was nothing in the box that would harm her. So the cashier put her finger into the box and quickly pulled it out. She said to the little old lady, "That smells like sh**."
The little old lady said, "It is. I want to buy three rolls of toilet paper."
Don't
mess with old people.

| Women with multiple cats - sign of mental illness? Posted: 12/3/2011 5:29:40 AM | I'm not a woman, but we have multiple cats because we have a mother (who is feral, but lives on our property and we take care of her) and her offspring (she escaped from the vet when we took her to be spayed, and showed up here a week later, pregnant--we opted to keep them together as a family). The dynamic between them as a family is very strong.
I would be more likely to think that not liking cats would be a sign of a mental illness. I mean, they're cute, cuddly, loving, warm...who wouldn't appreciate that?
And any cat owner knows you don't own cats. You're just the unpaid help to make sure the food dish is full and open the door when they want to go out.
Yep. Cats don't have owners. They have staff.

I do like cats, but I do not like them as pets. For one, I have a fairly strong allergy to them. I do have a dog, but my allergy to dogs is significantly lower. And the dog I have now can not be around cats, I have little doubt that he would kill one given the opportunity.

Maybe it's just human nature, but I don't think many of us want the last memories of ourselves to revolve around being eaten by our pet cat. The ashes to ashes and dust to dust thing sets a little better with me than the cat turd ending
Cause getting eaten by worms and maggots under the ground is soooooo much more appealing.
BTW, also?... while you were dead, a pervert undertaker just had necrophilia with your perfectly good looking corpse... Comforting, isn't it?

| Women with multiple cats - sign of mental illness? Posted: 12/3/2011 10:40:14 PM | This is my view on pets... even excessive pet ownership. I would rather people pamper their pets to extreme degrees rather than take on the responsibility of parenthood and screw that up. Because a badly raised child is a menace and nuisance to all of us. A spoiled pet is just a spoiled pet.
I'm more pissed off at terrible parents who just s#!t out kids like crazy and then raise them to be complete hooligans. Give me an annoying dog with a superiority complex any day.

| Women with multiple cats - sign of mental illness? Posted: 12/28/2011 1:20:41 PM | People who animal hoard tend to fail to care for their pets properly, that's majorly different than having 3 or 4 pets and treating them well.
I have 4 cats and I'd rather some people viewed me as being barking mad and avoided me than have 1 pet and be viewed as more socially acceptable and treat the pet I did have badly.
There are people who have/had 1 cat or dog who have abused and tortured them. That to me is a sign of mental illness or worse, because not everyone who abuses animals has any kind of mental illness, some are just plain evil.
Each to their own. | |
