I'm just asking because this guy went off on Clinton for having an affair - railed against him and voted for impeachment. But apparently, the fact that he talks the talk is enough. We shouldn't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain.
The guy is a hypocrite... and a liar. I wouldn't vote for him if he was running for office where I vote, and if he was the candidate representing the party I support, I would be asking for a new candidate.
We all knew Clinton was a womanizer before he was elected. Remember Jennifer Flowers?
Has he ever admitted any wrongdoing in this matter? I remember reading how he had unzipped and exposed himself uninvited to this woman. To myself, this sounds like the behaviour of an illbred drunken college boy... but he had neither youth or inebriation to blame. The guy could fit right in on "The Jerry Springer Show"... and this was the best the democrats could do to fill the seat of the most widely recognized public figurehead in the world? For a position such as the presidency, shouldn't people demand to have someone who displays a modicum of integrity and virtue?
He never held himself forward as a paragon of virtue; just the best man for the job. This guy ran as a paragon of virtue; ran on "family values"; attacked pre-marital sex. Then it turns out he didn't really believe any of it.
Everytime Clinton posed for a picture with his wife or daughter, he was promoting himself as a proponent of family values. If, as I highly suspect, the Clintons keep their sham of a marriage intact for purely political reasons.... well that would be hypocrisy taken to the extreme.
You know, it's okay to criticize a Republican. You don't need to defend every single one of them - many of them really are the scumbags they're made out to be.
While there are some valid arguments that can be made towards the effectiveness of Clinton's presidency, the guy was still a slimeball... can you admit that?
If not, then what arguments can you present that might lead me to believe that you're not a hypocrite? | |

My problem with Clinton is that he was elected as a liberal and then moved your country to the right. Not as far right as his successor, but definitely moved it to the right - he bowed to pressure to end important regulations; kept pumping up defence spending AFTER the big enemy had disappeared (and remember military spending had already tripled between 1980 and 1990 - there was absolutely no justification for the bloated military spending of 1979 after the USSR disappeared); gave away bandwidth to industry when even Germany raised billions from an auction; signed the Welfare Reform Act (surrendering in the War on Poverty).
I could go on, but it's too depressing. | |

Sorry... I should have used google. At the time Clinton was campaigning he never admitted to anything, did he? And even though the other woman's case was dismissed, I suspect it had merit. But I'm glad we found something we could agree on...

Oh, right; but those righties still banging their drum about Obama not being a US citizen isn't a grasp? Or fighting against healthcare in the US is the wrong thing? We all know it's just a weak-minded attempt to stop a black president from doing the most valuable, most important change to the American way of life. That would be too much of an accomplishment-

Someone from McKee's home called the Washington County Sheriff's Department to tip off authorities and provided them with printed images from a computer.

Diamond Police Detective Jim Murray says he posed as a 13-year-old girl named Cindy and was approached by a man who used the screen name duke dukeadk on Nov. 15 about noon in an online chat room.
Murray says Kauffman discussed meeting her to take nude photos and to have sex. Over the course of seven conversations during the past two months, transcripts show each chat was sexually graphic. Murray say Kauffman recognized the girl’s age, and even showed some hesitation, teasing the girl about whether she could be a cop.
Police say Kauffman repeatedly asked the girl to use a webcam, and didn't wait long to use his. The detective saved some photos from a webcam on Kauffman's computer in his home in Collins.

Atchison, 53, an assistant U.S. attorney from the northern district of Florida, has been arrested on suspicion of traveling to Detroit over the weekend to have sex with a 5 year old child. 1. If someone tries to put forth a standard for high moral values, but slips and fails, therefore, both the following are true:
a. said high moral values are now invalid; and,
b. those who did not subscribe to high moral values in the first place should be given a free pass regarding their indecent proposals and indescretions.
Let me ask you, something, dear, when is the last time a Republican came up to you and told you who should, or shouldn't have sex with...?
Anyways, using your logic, I would be better off being a Democrat and not suggesting high moral standards to anyone so that if I happen to slip and screw a 22 yr old intern, I'll get a free pass (or at least more compassion) from someone like you?
Actually, you are on to something here, although not for the reason you think. I was disgusted with Clinton for the Lewinsky affair AND I am disgusted with John Edwards (who I actually liked in the democratic primary) for his affair as well--in both cases these men hurt not just their families but also their parties...and in the case of the latter a political career that I would have preferred to see go farther. BUT, neither of these men have fought to deny other people marriage (as an example), throwing around holy books and thumping on pulpits like manipulative demagogues in the process.
It's funny, of course, to put it in the terms you do...but yes, I experience less mirth over someone's moral downfall over things like this when they have NOT set themselves up as not just moral examples but even BARRIERS to other people's happiness based on things like sexuality. I enjoy it less because they have NOT tried to deny me MY rights over my own body based on their own, as they see it, moral superiority and direct access to God's "omnipotent brain." Now, I can regret the fact that someone like John Edwards is against gay marriage PERSONALLY....but the fact that he doesn't thereby seek to LEGISLATE against it makes him, in my mind, a more moral man than ANYONE who seeks to do so.
In a nutshell, these conservatives--often evangelical conservatives (and there's a lovely list provided above)--who "fall" or "slip" start out, in my mind, from a position of LOWER moral ground than liberal politicians just by virtue of their political positions, which THEY (the conservatives) see as "moral" and I see as profoundly IMMORAL....and that, combined with their SHINING and OBVIOUS hypocrisy makes them fair game as far as I'm concerned...at least to laugh at (which I do even when they don't "fall" because I find their posturing so absurd). Deriding another person's hypocrisy is not a NEW thing to do...for obvious reasons. As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather vote for an admitted philanderer than an insidious hypocrite any day of the week....IF the philanderer is going to support my rights as a woman and my gay and lesbian friends' rights as human beings. | |

As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather vote for an admitted philanderer than an insidious hypocrite any day of the week....
As I already mentioned, Clinton was a hyporite.... saying one thing while doing another would pretty much be standard operating procedure for any philanderer. I never cared that much that he had lied about his affairs either, as has been pointed out numerous times by his supporters.... of course he's going to lie.... that's what liars do. For myself, the most revealing part of his behaviour was his willingness to hurt and embarass his family, and really for nothing more than an afternoon quickie. Anyone who exhibits that much disdain for their family's wellbeing is not someone who I'd ever trust to put the needs of a country in front of his own.
My feeling is that any of the good done by Clinton was done for purely selfish reasons. He never tried to make any really hard decisions... his whole presidency was a popularity contest... any decisions he made were to feed his own ego. One of the problems with this type of leadership is that oftentimes popular opinion is wrong. Just because more people support one thing doesn't mean that it is good for the country... or the world.
I can regret the fact that someone like John Edwards is against gay marriage PERSONALLY....
I've seen polls that would place Edwards among the majority regarding this issue. One example where popular opinion should not be followed (in your eyes at least.)

I could somewhat understand a person who falls in love with another and has an affair... but he was just a boy trying to get his rocks off. It's dissapointing to me how so many people are willing to lift him up as some kind of hero. As has already been mentioned in this thread, people had their suspicions this guy was a slimeball before he ever reached the presidency. How did a guy like this ever reach that level? For myself, I put a lot of the blame on Kennedy's martyrdom.
In spite of the claims from so many on the left, I don't really see a vast movement from the right imposing religous morality. I'm not really religous at all, but it doesn't take the Pope to see how far western civilizations' morality has fallen.... | |

Western "civilization" has never been truly moral EVER! Let's see it must have been moral to burn people at the stake, massacre natives and or displace them, exploit workers and murder them when they try to for unions, slavery, racism, xenophobia.
I agree with Gandhi on this one, when asked what he thought about Western "Civilization"? He said, "I think it would be a great idea."
The conservatives whom are under the boot of the evangelicals (not all mind you but most) They hide behind these "morals" when it is convenient to get votes such as with abortion, abstinence only education, against gay issues etc.. and then send the young men of this country to get blown to bits, and scandal after scandal. Look at the sheer volume of that list he posted. That is only the hypocrisy that has to do with sex scandals. Someone needs to make a list of all the times the destroy life when claiming to be the party of "pro-life" when in fact they only love the fetus but hate the child. They say no one should have sex before marriage then get busted sleeping around with 22 year old girls. They claim homosexuality is wrong and dangerous and they get busted in the bathroom trying to solicit gay sex. They claim family values and get busted sleeping around on their wives. Some of these guys were even saber rattlers for stronger laws against pedophilia only to find out they are pedophiles at the same time!
Now you do not have to hate the whole party for this, I do not. I understand it is some not all but, there is something here that needs to be addressed and it is the hypocrisy of holding the rest of the world to some moral standards at the same time breaking every single one of them. The worst part about this is they ran a crusade against clinton and they do the same thing all the time. The ole do as I say not as I do. Well have two words for people like that Piss off.
As far as Clinton and his family how do you know that Bill and his wife are not swingers or have some kind of open relationship?? You know it is not very uncommon these days? Oh that cant be either right for that would not fit into the narrow modern American Christian "morals" Indeed!
PS I never liked Clinton not trying to defend him but, people are automatically assuming that his wife never knew he was sleeping around. Believe me that woman is anything but stupid. (don't like her either but, she is a very sharp cookie.) | |

Since you conveniently left out the rest of my sentence, in which I qualify my preference with an "as long as".... you might be quoting me but you aren't addressing what I said.

A "feeling," as you put it, completely meaningless for the purpose of political discussion. Ultimately, Nobody can know what goes on his head at any given time, and so we can only judge his acts. And if you think there were times that he did "good," then it's silly to dismiss that simply because you think you have a window into his soul.

Personally, since I realize that the constitution is intended to protect minorities from the dictatorship of the majority, that is really neither here nor there to me. Trusting in the wisdom of the majority on issues to do with personal rights would be self-defeating in a secular, democratic republic.

I think very few people considered him to be a faithful husband by that point. But I'd ask, since you are addressing me, where you think I've done this--lifted him up as some kind of hero. No, I think he was a comparitively good president. Not the same thing as a hero.

Nonsense. As the poster above me points out, the MYTH of the past "morality" of Western Civilization is just that--a myth. And EVERY generation touts the past as some kind of idyllic age where men were men and women were virgins.
BUT, the problem with the right isn't just their ATTEMPTS to impose religious morality (if what you mean is preventing people from having sex). It's their attempts to USE the fervor they can raise in a minority to interfere with all kinds of things, even things that don't have anything to do with what most people would consider "morality." Right wing leaders USE people's religious enthusiasm to manipulate them in all kinds of ways....including when it comes to issues that really have no religious element to them at all.
BUT, if you think that Christian conservatism isn't at the heart of denying gays their equal rights then you aren't paying attention. | |

The big news of the day was President Obama's address to Congress. But we cannot forget the schadenfreudelicious scandal that got the day off to a roaring start. As you'll remember, California state Rep. Michael Duvall (R-Yorba Linda), a married champion of family values and traditional marriage, was picked up on a live mic at a committee hearing graphically boasting of his sexual encounters with not one but two mistresses (one of whom is a lobbyist with business before his committee).
After first insisting that he thought he was having a "private conversation", which one imagines is true, Duvall resigned his office shortly after noon California time.
Now there are a few more details. First, a California group has called on the state legislature to investigate Duvall, until today the vice chair of the Committee and Utilities and Commerce, for possibly selling votes for sex. Next, the energy lobbyist Duvall bragged about sleeping with, Heidi DeJong Barsuglia, has categorically denied to her employer that she ever had a sexual relationship of any kind with Duvall. And her employer, Sempra Energy, has released a statement to that effect.
It seems they can't keep their lips shut either | |

Whereas setting the bar lower and telling people to expect less of you makes your failings become accepted as just a quirky personality trait that makes you endearing to the public.
Perhaps we should elect a convicted rapist into the presidential office. So that when he "falls off the wagon," we'll just say, "Oh, that wacky rapist. There he goes raping again. Silly knucklehead." | |
