Tip: If you're having trouble falling asleep, put a fan at the top of the bed so that it is blowing down the length of the bed. Get a spray bottle with a fine mist. Spray the mist into the fan's breeze and it will land all over your body feeling great!

Doesn't work so well if you're sleeping under the covers or wearing pajamas!

I think if I have one more person walk into my office and say...wow its hot out there...I am going to combust. Sheesh , my office is not airconditioned...its a old building with no windows to open.I have one fan that blows the hot air from one side of the office to another..lol so YES ...I know its hot out there. They then say to me...oh wow your sooooooooooooo lucky to work in this nice cool office and my reply is , its not so coolllllllll after being here a few hours..lol. All in all though besides finding it hard to sleep at night I am not going to complain. After all summer is doing exactally what its suppose to do...be HOT. I can see it now, everyone starts complaining about the heat or needing some rain and wham, rain for the next 10 months sooooooo...bring on the SUN !!! :)

According to the weather page, today is even hotter than yesterday's record, at 34 C. Funny, it doesn't feel as hot as yesterday to me.

http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/pages/bc-74_metric_e.html

I also noticed that when they predict high temperatures, the actual temperature on the day always seems to be at least a couple degrees higher than the forecast - even the forecast from the day before. So either their forecast is systematically wrong, or maybe the local weather station should fix their measuring apparatus.

Where do you work?

I've heard of spontaneous human combustion, but have never seen it for myself.

I'll bring lots of ice-water, just in case.

Could have been spontaneous combustion, Houston!

We have some serious problems. Now, there is a big fire on Blackcomb. Everyone did get off of both mountains. The fire is 75 hectares now and 0 percent contained. It is a category 4 fire. Good news --- the rain is falling now.

Also, you are not imagining the heat. We have broken heat record for the hottest day on record. First, we broke it yesterday and today, we broke yesterday`s record.

Yesterday morning I went looking for a couple of fans and there is none in existence…lol. Sears will get a shipment in next week – London drugs near where I live said their truck was coming in last night with a few…
I called later and they didn’t receive any fans in their shipment ….grrrrr.

Does anyone know of stores that have received an influx of fans?

^^^^ Runs WW
Staples Business Depot sells a variety of fans.
Their website is out of stock for most models but there is still one available.

Other retailers to consider are business suppliers and hardware suppliers.

Good luck.

Thanks for the recommendations above…

I was wearing my idiot hat along with a few others yesterday morning walking the Kingsway strip looking for fans yesterday morning before the heat of the day hit (10 am)…lol

I have visitors this long weekend ….and I don’t want to share the existing fans at night…lol

I will use my phone this morning to ring up retailers….

A Great IDEA: My son mastered the use of his bedroom fan - he has the fan on the floor at the foot of his bed….the air blows through the sheets forming a tent…he is kept cool right through the night….

I remember in May wondering when we'll start getting nice, warm weather and thinking........this better be a long, hot summer, to make up for the crappy winter we had.
I guess we should be careful what we wish for.

The hottest I've seen was in Kamloops over 20 years ago, it was 115 F.
thats about 47 C

I recall watching a program on Discovery Channel about how they keep cool in desert climates, specifically it was in Dubai, where AC is not the norm for most people.

They have extremely high ceilings and hang damp blankets or sheets from beams. Even if there is very little breeze, it helps to carry the heat away through evaporation, and when the winds blows can lower the temperature of a home by up to 10 degrees.

To test this theory out, I opened up both my front and back doors as it creates the greatest airflow, then hung a damp sheet over the door where the breeze came in and started to notice a big difference, 5 degrees on the thermometer.

Doing the same with a bedroom window I am sure would work well, and you could probably use a fan on the other side of a sheet to create your own breeze.

Keeping your feet and head cool have a dramatic affect on your body temperature, so keeping them cool can make a big difference as well. Many have already mentioned putting a damp cloth on your forehead, but putting your feet in a small kiddy pool, in a slightly filled tub for a few minutes, or even a baking pan or casserole dish? will help you cool off.

Even though things are starting to cool down, hopefully this will help some beat the heat.

I read an article, think it was in "Popular Science", many years ago, about architecture and building design in very hot places like Egypt & Israel. I don't remember the details, but recall that some of the walls have openings and somehow created a measurable cooling effect. Not sure anymore, but I think the venturi principle contributed to this

I guy I know has been working on a roof this past week. His trick to survive... he folds 6 small towels into small pad, soaks them in water and puts them in his freezer over a large bottle so it freezes into a rounded shape (not flat). He carries the frozen pads in his lunch kit. On the job site he puts a cloth on his head, then one of the frozen towel and then his ball cap. This technique keeps his head cool. The set of six lasts him the day.

It's cool enough here today I can actually go for a bike ride after 10 am without worrying about overheating. This would have been unthinkable earlier this week.

Things are definitely improving! The heat wave rages on with less severity. There is a big difference between 34 degrees and 27 degrees. I feel whatever sanity I had slowly coming back to me.

The heat wave has obviously cooked some peoples' eggs. Probably on their neighbour's porches even. Wouldn't wanna live next to THAT. Let's just hope for the poor neighbour's sake that there is no gun in the house during the fireworks tonight...some people can be so jealous of others who have real lives...

You read my journal! I am so touched. Did you leave a comment?

It's hot and tempers are quick, including my own, but we heal. I cannot wait until I can close my windows so I do not have to listen to my neighbours. It has been a challenge.

I was down on Pacific St. yesterday and the days temperature was at its’ highest - I went to Starbucks for coffee and asked for glass of ice. After finishing my coffee….I wrapped some ice in a facecloth I ripped in half and continued on with my day…it kept my body temperature down….interesting little tid bit.

Whine, whine, whine, how Vancouver can you get? I'd swear natives here would die if they had nothing to complain about. Come November and December, people will be nostalgic for the past week---I'm serious. Yet, despite the cold rain, they will gloat with typical BC smugness about how everything is better than the prairies, blah, blah, blah. Seriously, many people here have no legitimate claim to existence.

Okay,,,,everyone,,,,repeat after me,,,, "It's not the heat,,,it's the humidity!!!". Most Ontario transplants still have this saying imbended in their head,,,put some of you BCers will have start learning it for a week or two each year. You'll also learn that there is not much you can do when the temps start getting into that 35 degree mark other than take off your clothes,,,grin and bare it,,,,lol. The "baring" part is the added bonus for those that needed to be told.

August 2nd and some of the leaves on the trees are turning colours and falling. Now that sucks for various reasons.

I like the autumn leaf show to be in autumn when the weather is cooler. To me it is the nicest time of year. I suppose this is small upset when one considers entire forests are being burned to the ground.

Sweet Jane

Yup, it is still too hot or humid for me.

Out for a beautiful drive to Hell's Gate today and watched the river(s) at the side of the road longingly... considering getting my fishing licence again so I'll have an excuse to stand in the water up to my ribs ..... Air was still hot as hell, but it was dry and a wind was blowing. What a difference.

Next PoF event at Walts' place, clothing optional?

Well, to be truthful, I do not really understand how humid feels. I think it might be how things feel in a steam room.

It is still to frigging hot. A good deal of the province is on fire. It reminds me of that song from down under about the land of thunder and how can we sleep when are beds our on fire?

We are now at 700 fires.

For those of you who have been evacuated or are close to someone who has, please know that you are in my and many other peoples prayers and thoughts.
