| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/1/2009 9:57:33 PM | Regrettably, due to a couple of spoilers, the announced TH acquisition of POF didn't pan out. The net effect is that we all will have to pay for Timbits.
However, there is a new development. RIM, maker of the Blackbery device, disclosed that it has been prevented from submitting an offer for the assets of Nortel Networks Wireless Business.
Looking for a strategic Canadian acquisition, they turned around and outbid TH (see OP) in their offer for the leading singles forum site Plenty Of Fish (guaranteed dating option coming real soon). RIM directors having recognized a good deal when they see one, pointed out that that core POF assets (mainly the serious members and frequent forum contributors) are now more valuable than Nortel’s remaining assets. Particularly, the POF search and chemistry matching algorithms constitute a quantum leap over Nortel’s wireless technology (well, that’s what their accountants are saying).
Based on its preliminary review, RIM would be prepared to pay just over US 1.0 billion, subject to due dilligence and acceptance of Canadian Tire money currency, and they will sweeten their offer by including one common share and a brightly colored Blackberry device to each registered POF member. The new generation of Blackberries will be encoded to effectively block all cute-and-cheeky posters and subversives with Castro connections. The available colors are yellow, green, and red – matched closely with POF emoticon colors.
The next press conference will take place at Tim Horton's Guelph branch.

| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/1/2009 10:36:28 PM | Oh I'm sorry (didn't someone say that Canadians were polite and tolerant?). I didn't realise that the forums were only for agreement and that dissension was not appreciated or welcomed. Preaching to the choir only from now on. Got it!

| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 5:02:23 AM | I find the forums an interesting place to hang out because of the diverse, and sometimes hilarious, presentations of opinions. Truth be told, if we all agreed on every topic, there would be no need for forums.
If we were all robots, with no ability to think or opine as individuals, this world would be one he** of a dreary, boring orb!!!!!!!!!!

| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 6:49:36 AM | "have fun and enjoy what it means to be Canadian"
I hope you don't believe that your list is really what it means to be a Canadian.
Horton is just another fast food restaurant. To believe as some people do that it is something to be held up with pride is their right. However, don't hold all Canadian's to it. Many of us choose not to live the Horton's lifestyle, just as we choose not to live the Molson's Canadian lifestyle.
Compliance is taught in school. It helps Horton's sell more coffee. Some of us choose different coffee...

| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 7:16:14 AM | | Thank God in Canada we have the freedom to choose. I,ll share a cup of Tim,s coffee with a nice blonde lady anyday. Anything after that doesn,t interest me. | |

| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 8:43:08 AM | Hey Gustof: You talking to me? I'll meet you at the Tim's halfway btwn Calgary and TO. Where might that be. One thing for sure- we'll know we're there.
Love that Tim's is all the same- no matter where you go. Not complaince Moraima- it's called comfort. Just like your mom's roast beef dinner, every single Sunday forever. Always the same. That's why it's called comfort food. It's predictable. And in this chaotic world, sometimes predictable is pretty good.

That is what compliance is all about............don't the same thing over and over. Hey, isn't that a definition for something............what was that a definition for now???
All this is similar to those who deal with women being overweight, except it is a few who can't deal with the fact that their fav. coffee shop Horton's, isn't appreciated by others.
Joking of POF meet and greets being at Horton's, without knowing it there was a POF meet and greet going on, I went to a pool hall/pub with friends. We we amused when at the end of the evening someone told us what was going on.

hmmm... sounds like they're being colour-matched to Hudson's Bay Point Blankets!!!!
now THERE is something else that is quintessentially Canadian!

| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 10:35:40 AM | in margaret atwood's book SURVIVAL, the thesis is that what joins us is the land, its harshness (at times, eh-- whoa if people knew how nice it is here 8 or so months of the year-- but never mind, what Divine Bovine said way above)-- and that working together was what made it possible simply to live. in Canada, too, though the overall record is shameful, IMO, we tended to be allied with the First Nations, who often crossed the border to escape the US, and who in alliance with Canadians won some of the essential battles in the War of 1812 (when the US invaded and tried to annex Canada). see John Ralston Saul's recent A FAIR COUNTRY, which posits that this alliance between european and Native people here was stronger, more foundational and intertwined, and deeper than we are currently aware...
my feeling is that Canucks have a sense of humour and irony, a lack of flagwaving, a generally strong sense of the land. we have also tended as a nation to be more understanding of each other, i think. but our culture in english canada needs to be strengthened. we could learn a lot from Quebec.
moraima i see your point and tend to agree with that point of view too. i just kind of think that anything that joins us has value-- where is the line between conformity in the authoritarian sense, and commonality?

| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 11:10:08 AM | com⋅pli⋅ance /kəmˈplaɪəns/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [kuhm-plahy-uhns] Show IPA Use compliance in a Sentence –noun 1. the act of conforming, acquiescing, or yielding. 2. a tendency to yield readily to others, esp. in a weak and subservient way. 3. conformity; accordance: in compliance with orders. 4. cooperation or obedience: Compliance with the law is expected of all. 5. Physics. a. the strain of an elastic body expressed as a function of the force producing the strain. b. a coefficient expressing the responsiveness of a mechanical system to a periodic force.
Moraima: Tim's is a choice we freely make. We can choose other coffee places. Those who have affection for Tim's know why we do. It's what binds many people together and makes us understand Canadian. All you have to say is Tim's and people know instantly what you mean- if they're from Canada.
Other Canadianisms- moccassins (first nations), The Ex (for Ontarians), Carnivale in February, Tiny Tim donuts, cabane au sucres. The list goes on. Who cares if it's not sophisticated- it's there. And kids don't care- and grow up with warm, fond memories.

| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 11:17:31 AM | ^^^ I agree with most of your post, but feel differently on a couple of things.
"a lack of flagwaving" That is not what I am seeing. Especially travelling so many find it necessary to brag about Horton's, beer etc. as being the best in the world. I have had international friends ask why we seen to need to devalue what they have so much.
I tend to think globally rather than nationally. I don't see pushing Horton's ect. type thinking internationally (many other posters are from other countries) makes us look better in other countries eyes. Rattle your Horton's coffee cups if you wish, but you wouldn't like it if other countries were posting about what they had that was better than ours. We all have heard the obnioxous names some Canadian's have for people from certain countries who go on and on about being the best.
I find it strange that there is a back lash against gender specific bashing, overweight bashing etc, but these same people think bashing anyone who doesn't worship at the Horton's cash register is ok.
Everyone has the right to like Horton's and spend their money there or not. Just another personal preference.
|
| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 12:18:28 PM | | Moraima: Read what posters are saying. You don't need to get defensive or take it seriously. people are simply saying what it is to be Canadian. Where did anyone ever say it was better. And it's ok if they think it's better. That is called pride. Everyone thinks what they have is better. So what? Too much sensitivity here over a relatively trivial issue. You need to lighten up. | |

| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 12:36:20 PM | My take on the situation happening on this thread is, what started out as people being humorous and having fun, has turned into something unrecognizable and nasty. I see that a lot on these forums. It's too bad, really. I'm on other sites where people can manage to get along without being subject to derision and diatribe just because they try to have a little light-hearted fun. The majority of the posts here were made with "tongue in cheek" and never meant to be taken seriously. This site is becoming overtaken by the strident and opinionated who, if they have all the friends they say they have, wouldn't have time to be here. If ya can't take a joke ... well, ya know the rest of the saying.
I'm going over to Facebook or the S-place, where it's a hell of a lot more fun and I can be my usual silly self without chastisement from people with broom handles up their hoo-hoos.

| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 1:00:57 PM | Been in Ontario for decades now never heard them called "Ex".
"people are simply saying what it is to be Canadian. "
Only certain people think that way. Many Canadians don't feel that way at al.
Like I said you are all welcome to go to Horton's. Why you get so bent out of shape because others aren't buying to so called humour I have no idea. When I live, it is almost never called Tim's, but refered to as Horton's.
Those who think they are not complying are the ones fight the hardest against anyone who says anything about not dealing with Horton's.................interesting. Maybe light bulb moments will happen, probably not.
|
| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 7:58:44 PM | | Where ya been in Ontario Moraima. Everyone calls it the Ex. You need to get out there and have some fun. This post is for those who want to have a good time. Why not just leave it alone. What's it to you? | |
|
| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 8:05:19 PM | moraima: The original post was not about quality of coffee or a venue for other posters asking you for a permission to visit the said establishment
The debate didn't heat up until you came in with your usual sour and combative style and started the bashing campaign. You keep saying that you still have a few remaining friends in an underdeveloped communistic country. It could be, only because they don't read your POF forum posts.
|
| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 8:28:19 PM | ^^^ Blame the people (hello, I wasn't the only one, there were several) who don't appreciate you shooving your humour and flag waving about Horton's, not the people who use words like "people with broom handles up their hoo-hoos"...........that shows a lot of Canadian Class for sure.
"you still have a few remaining friends in the underdeveloped communistic country. It could be, only because they don't read POF fora. "
Try multiple people. Also try that they (unlike a lot of you) can deal with others who choose to disagree with them.
Too funny how the Horton crew loves to talk about being in a free country (don't even get that other countries are just as free as this one..........research Trudeau and Diefenbaker plus other politicians backed that communist country) yet get all mobbed up if someone disagrees with them. Free country...................not in a million years due to closed minds.

| Tim Hortons / POF Alliance Posted: 8/2/2009 8:47:30 PM | | Moraima: All I can say is you need to watch Mr. Bean, laugh, have a glass of wine, eat chocolate, and have a super hot date. And really good sex. You'll be all better after that. | |

moraima
Been in Ontario for decades now never heard them called "Ex". I don’t know whom are you calling the “Ex”, but if you can calm down and read the posts carefully, you’ll find out the referring poster wasn’t talking about her previous husband or my previous wife, but most likely about “The Ontario Ex” – Canadian National Exhibition. I believe, that last year even Guelph Tribune made a passing reference to this great event.
