Christ on a cracker! How did a joking question and light-hearted banter turn into this freaking train wreck?!
I haven't been chomping at the bit to visit Canada anyway (Sorry, Canucks. No offense intended.) and the info on TH wasn't really encouraging me in that regard. But people with brooms up their hoo-hoos?! Ahem! There's a visual I don't want and now it is locked in my mind forever. And white trash like me might get swept up!

I do see people posting here who have always showed balance and fairness in their posts (ie. no gender bashing or over weight bashing etc.) so full of alligence for Horton's they have tried anything and everything to descredit anyone who dared to disagree. Now their character only seems balanced on certain issues. They don't know how to apply it across the board.

Sorry, I don't know which posts you're referring to? Would you care to be more specific as to which ones?

Tim Hoton's markets itself as quintessentially Canadian but it is an American subsidiary of Wendy's. And it's horrible coffee. And who would go there for a date for even a meet and greet? I take my 70 yr. old father there for the soup. Wouldn't a locally owned spot with ambiance and its own flair be much more interesting? Comfy chairs, soft music in the background (as opposed to Muzak), homemade cookies.

National treasure my a**!

Isn't is amazing that a month before you posted that, Timmies had announced their return to Canada!!

Toronto Star Newspapers

The Canadian Press

Considering that many Canadians practically bleed Tim Hortons coffee on any given workday, it may come as a surprise to some that the much-beloved chain is once again returning its home base to Canada.

Didn't know Tims has actually been registered in the United States for years? That's easy to forgive, considering just how deeply ingrained the brand has become in the Canadian consciousness.

But it is true that the house built on the doughnut and double-double was for nearly 15 years -- a result of its purchase by U.S. burger chain Wendy's -- registered in Delaware.

Parent company Tim Hortons Inc. announced yesterday it has filed documents in the United States that would shift its corporate ownership back to Oakville. The company says the move will save on taxes and make international expansion easier...... .....
Tim Hortons, founded in the mid-'60s by Hamilton-born hockey legend Tim Horton, became part of Wendy's in 1995. After Wendy's founder Dave Thomas died in 2002, the two companies started to drift apart, with the doughnut chain choosing to focus on sandwiches and other breakfast and lunch options. The concept clashed with offerings from the Wendy's brand.

In 2006, the company was spun off into its own U.S. entity, though its corporate headquarters remained in Oakville.

Since then, the chain has struggled to boost sales in the United States despite thriving in Canada.

Tim Hortons headquarters will be back in Oakville, Ontario as soon as the legal red tape is taken care of.

I am not about to people please and pretend Horton's says Canada to me.

whether or not you and the other Timmies nay-sayers like it, Tim Horton's happens to be ONE of those things that does "say Canada" to many, many people - outside the country as well as right here at home.

i can't stand their coffee myself and choose local places over chains wherever possible.

but Americans especially like to say that Canadians are particularly humourless when it comes to stereotypes about our country and you've gone beyond proving their point; you've beaten it into submission.

>>> As to Trudeau backing a communistic country, I wouldn’t call having a round of drinks with Fidel exactly as endorsement of communism.

Whoops. Tryagan, stick to humour. You obviously don't know your history or politics. What Trudeau did was to snub the US ultimatum - "If you trade with Cuba, you will not be able to trade with us". Most countries worldwide obeyed the American dictate. Canada did not. I believe that bully American foreign policy was the greatest force that caused hardship in Cuba.

I know you are just trying to get me worked up to fly to the East Coast, so we could discuss it in person. And Cape Breton is the place I’d dearly love to be, but my plate is quite full right now, so I doubt we can do it this summer.

However, since I made it a practice not to argue politics with pretty girls and my good friends, when I come to your beautiful island, I’d rather take you dancing or blueberry picking on some of those spectacular coastal trails.

As to Fidel, I agree, that from the Canadian perspective he always looked like a pretty cool cucumber, I just wasn’t crazy about the company he kept. And although Pierre could stand up to the bully south of the boarder, poor Fidel couldn’t afford to do the same when dealing with the Russian bears. And in terms of governing the country, unfortunately, his management style was not quite up to the snuff. Although he could play a really good host to Trudeaus, unfortunately, he wasn’t able to take best care of his people.

Trudeau and Castro were good friends, because they respected their differences and agreed to disagree. I have seen communism from a close distance, and I can tell you it wasn’t as pretty as it seems from thousands of miles away. So unless there is a remote chance that you’ll change your mind on this very subject, let’s just agree to disagree. I really think, we’ll have a better time together discussing something else on that blueberry trail or in some cozy dancing hall. And if everything goes well, we can fly for honeymoon to Cuba.

I'll suck up the back-handed compliment. If you did not think me pretty, would you argue/discuss politics with me? I was raised in a political home. My Father was a die-hard Socialist - NDP. Another quintessential Canadianism besides Tim Hortons is Socialism and socialist policy. During the 60's and still to this day, right wing Americans labelled us as pinko Communists.

No honeymoon with a guy who states

As to Trudeau backing a communistic country, I wouldn’t call having a round of drinks with Fidel exactly as endorsement of communism.

The alliance and support wasn't an *endorsement* of communism. It was respect for the autonomy of a struggling country under the crushing thumb of an abusive and controlling super-giant.

Are you a born Canadian or transplanted? I sense a schmeck of south of the border Republican.

I don't much like their coffee (give me Second Cup) but I do drink gallons of it on the way to or from hockey. Beats the heck outta arena coffee!!!

As for a date? hmm, nope, don't think so. Back in the day when my sweetie and I were getting to know each other we frequented Second Cup and also, umm, Sobey's. (I think he liked it cuz I groped him in the produce aisle).

What Canada did in those for days for Cuba was more symbolical than of any meaningful substance. Most freighters came from Russia loaded with goods from their satelite states. They carried rockets and a lot of ammunition, but no donuts.

I am transplanted Canadian. Not from south, but from middle of Europe, still with a bitter taste for the guys who wavered the red flag with a sickle and hammer. That concludes my political commentary.

Tryagan, i am at almost a polar opposite from you politically, but would like to nod gratefully to that gentlemanly post.

also thanks to the posters who raised this, for the earlier reminder to count that Canadian Tire money in the back of the drawer...now if they'd just take Canadian Tire money at Tim's...

Don't worry about a few minor differences. If Maria Shriver and Arnold could get over their opposing political views and keep their marriage strong and passionate, I'm sure we could manage - especially after having gone together through this ordeal.
Since this is getting really deep, we might soon need a supersized shovel. I thought, we can pay for the shovel with Canadian Tire money (I have some stashed away, too), and the savings would pay for a large box of timbits. If we pool our resources, we could get an extra large box, so we'll have a few extra timbits left for the other posters (yes, also the ones with shredded coconuts and raisins). It sure beats raw sugar.

Awwwwwwwww, TA, I just sprayed my Timmies all over my monitor. Now I have to clean up. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeek, I'm still waking up and almost used the CT money to wipe down the monitor. What WAS I thinking - I have to save up for a new set of chisels. Maybe I can use that flyer with the $50.00 Rogers card attached to it. Nawww, I was gonna use that for toilet paper. I think it'd be kinda sharp though.

especially after having gone together through this ordeal.

It has been an ordeal, hasn't it? This thread kind of reminds me of a vegetarian who is walking down a street and comes upon a steak house and reads the menu posted on the door leading into the steak house. The vegetarian then knowingly enters the steak house, looks at the menu again, sees no vegetarian entrees listed on it, stands up, stomps feet up and down, arms flailing about, screaming "I don't like beef. It's all about me. I want the menu changed to vegetarian fare. It's all about me. Who cares if others like beef. It's all about me. The menu must be changed. It's all about me." Moral of the sotry: If you don't like beef, don't enter the steak house.

Now, having said that, let it be known that this steak house serves timbits for dessert and you can pay for your lovely steak dinner with Canadian Tire money. Enjoy your meal.

Twisted Sister, stop talking like that. It's showing your redneck Canadian side.

And Margo, I'm with you - while I don't very often purchase a coffee, but when I do, it is usually from a Second Cup coffee shop. I can count on one hand the number of times I have been in a Tim Hortons' coffee shop. Like the majority of posters in this thread, my participation in this thread was to share some wit and to poke a little fun at some of the many things that makes us Canadian.

Not so much. Story was more like walking down the street past a Horton's and all the people there were carrying on about anyone not liking Horton's was unCanadian. Say what you want while you are in Horton's. Enjoy it as much as you like. Just expect people (as they did) to complain if you go on an international website claiming that all Canadian's are this, this and this...............when their are so many Canadian's that aren't like that at all.

Sorry moraima: You don't win on this one. You're outnumbered. Tim's IS quintessentially Canadian- as is Air Farce, 22 Minutes, and Rick Mercer. So are Mae West and Joe Louis- esp if you are in Quebec then you eat those while drinking a Pepsi.

I was out with a friend who never checks her mail on here. Told her about the Tim's discussion and how people weighed in with our Canadian stuff. She thought it was great and said she'll check it out. Then at dinner, she tossed me a few. We had a great time coming up with things unique to Canada and the people here. It was such fun. So Moraima, you're fighting a losing battle here. Why not join the debating society. They could use someone like you.

You really need to learn how to laugh at yourself. Or maybe those curlers must be rolled too tight.

No winners or looses in any thread.

Funny how these same people who are demanding to be winners of the stereotyping of Canadians to the imagine they see that revolving around Horton's, are the same people to get upset when gender etc. is stereotyped here.

Never watched 22 mins. in my life, refuse to shop at Crappy Tire etc. (my late husband hated the products and customer service at Crappy Tire) just like many other Canadian's. Wonder what the world watching this threads thinks of the mob mentally of the Horton crew. Do you people have stocks in Horton's or something?
