Just because a person understand the language doesn't mean they are willing celebrated the worse of Crappy Tires, Horton's, or joining the line up at the beer store to buy Molson's..............ew.

Geez, I think I've overdosed on timbits. Two songs have been running through my head all day:

"Pour me another tequila, Sheila" and then it switches over to "Besame, besame el culo"

moraima - Msg 175

Do you people have stocks in Horton's or something?

Actually, this would be a good time to load up on TH stock. (symbol THI on TSX - trading around $27 this week).

After getting unprecented publicity (allegedly Reuters picked up the merger story from Internet streaming , and although the original rumour was later denied, it was still great PR), the THI price will go through the roof tomorrow. This should be good news even for investors who hate TH coffee and donuts, since they can still participate in the Canadian dream. And don't forget, the next THI dividend will be doubled and distributed in form of extra large timbits sprinkled with your favourite topping - essentially a double, double deal.

Funny you should ask.................

Wonder what the world watching this threads thinks of the mob mentality of the Horton crew.

I don't think the world gives a flying fart........ nor do I.....
Personally, I prefer a particular brand of coffee and a particular coffee shop. It's called freedom of choice.

Now, will somebody please pass the timbits............

Is the rumour I am hearing true that if you are TH shareholder one of the perqs is preferential pricing on timbits in the stores? I'm just wanting to confirm my understanding of what will no doubt be an historical event before I let all of my peeps know about the TH stock tip. I'm not quite sure what exactly "gossiping about history" entails but I sure don't want to be accused of it.

Molsons? Yuck! Gotta go for a Blue. Oops! Timmies doesn't serve Blue with the Timbits, Molsons Ex, either. If'n I could get a hot chocolate for myself, and whatever my date is having for her.....hot tea? OK, we'll have that for her. We'd much appreciate a Dutchie and a couple of apple fritters..........Oh, and just maybe, one or two of those honey glazed for dessert. Thank you. Oh, yes, that will be for here, as we need to chat for a while, and listen to all the inane and a$$anine arguements being carried on outside at the moment.

Ah - Timmies. I met my sweetie there for the first time. It's safe, clean, well-lighted and the one in my area is VERY close to the cop shop. Besides that, they make a good chocolate croissant pastry thing. Darn it, now I have a Tim's craving.

a Timbit is a doughnut hole

Contrary to popular belief, Timbits aren't made from doughnut holes ... so it could be Tim's droppings for all we know.

POF hook you with the forums ... Tim Hortons hook you with the cocaine in their coffee.

NO WAY!!! But I've always wondered if they put something addictive in their coffee. Same with Pepsi. I know more people addicted to that beverage than any other soft drink.

Just a quick upfate - really, really, real news - Aug 10,2008
No free coffee, not even for gays

After an online outcry, Tim Hortons (TSX:THI) is distancing itself from an upcoming Rhode Island event designed to "take a stand" against same-sex marriage. Brochures for this Sunday's "Celebrate Marriage and Family Day" in Warwick, R.I., list the popular coffee-and-donut chain as one of its sponsors. On Monday, Tim Hortons posted a statement on its website saying it would no longer provide coffee for the celebration as it runs afoul of its guidelines to not support "religious groups, political affiliates, or lobby groups."

"Tim Hortons and its store owners have always welcomed all families and communities to its restaurants and will continue to do so," the statement said. "We apologize for any misunderstanding or inconvenience this may have caused."

The Aug. 16 event is being put on by the National Organization for Marriage, a U.S. non-profit founded in 2007 "in response to the growing need for an organized opposition to same-sex marriage." Chris Plante, executive director of NOM's Rhode Island chapter, said Tim Hortons had agreed to provide free coffee for about 250 people.

Wow...cant believe I havent landed on this thread before....what a read!!!

Here is my take on what I read and felt while reading through this thread.

If someone suggests meeting at Tim's for a first meet, my response is why not? If I have a better suggestion I will offer it. I dont drink coffee, but I am not opposed to having a tea now and again....although I prefer to steep my own tea and let the teabag effuse longer than they do, but I will likely get a perrier anyway.

Tim Horton is a Hockey Hall of Famer, born in Cochrane Ont. I went to school with his nephew in North Bay, and had the priviledge of meeting him when I was in public school. That is part of what makes Tim's so popular, the legacy of the namesake. Whether you like Tim Horton's coffee or not, both Hockey and Tim's have become Iconic to Canadian culture. As has maple syrup, national health care, fabulous Ice wines, Neil Young, the Calgary Stampede, Kissing the cod, Juste Pour Rire, the train ride from Calgary to Vancouver and so many other treasures that make our vast country unique and beautiful.

Every country has their own iconic identifications and brand of national pride. Those that were born in Canada, or choose to make Canada their home, can be proud of their country and our place in the world. We are not perfect, there are still problems to be addressed, but the standard of living for most is amoung the best in the world. Cant we all just take a minute to appreciate that while you sip whatever beverage is your preference. Afterall, your ability to have that preference is also a Canadian right. In Canada we can drink Kenyan, Brazilian, Kona, Costa Rican or any other coffee we like, other places, not so much.

I recalled the Molson commercial several years ago, where a young man gave a most righteous rant...."I am Canadian".

Hey,
I'm not a lumberjack, or a Furtrader,
and I don't live in an igloo,
or eat blubber
or own a dogsled.
And I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada,
although I'm certain they're really, really nice.

I have a prime minister... not a president,
I speak English and French, not American
and I pronounce it About, not A-boot.

I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack,
I believe in peacekeeping, not policing,
diversity not assimilation,
and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.

A toque is a hat,
a chesterfield is a couch,
and it IS pronounced Zed,
not Zee... ZED!!
Canada is the 2nd largest land mass,
the 1st nation of hockey,
and the best part of North America.

My name is Joe...
and...I......AM......CANADIAN!

Thank you.

Timmy's apple fritters have gotten disgustingly small and suspiciously looking machine made over the years. Fritters used to be distinctly Canadian (like butter tarts are).

Funny thing about Canadians is it is very hard to find a national anything that unifies us. We're so pluralistic it is hard to put your finger on our identity. Hockey used to unify us, more so than now... at one time something like 80% of all households tuned into hockey on Saturday night and as high of a % of players in the NHL were Canadian.

Now, I'd say the one statement that gets at the Canadian identity is "Not American". So it is no wonder Timmies gets the nod on "being Canadian".

I have been living in Canada for decades. I have never watched a hockey game. My late husband didn't watch hockey games. Our friends didn't watch hockey games. My friends now never play or watch hockey. Yes, we skate. The same goes for scoccer, football, basketball, baseball etc. Many people don't watch sports on tv or in real life.

Why is it people can only see other people as being just like they are. No wonder Canadians can agree on an identy.

Just like Horton's many Canadians pass on things others try to convince the world is totally Canadian.

When defining typical behavior, it is not necessary for ALL to exhibit that behavior or preference, but only a representative share based on the sample and options.

Out of 100 people, if 40 identified with Tim's, 10 with Starbucks, 10 with Timothy's, 10 with Country Style, 10 a combination of all others, indicating the typical would be a preference for Tim's. That is just how those things work.

It also doesnt surprise me that if someone doesnt watch hockey that their friends dont watch hockey (or other sports for that matter). Birds of a feather.... The same logic suggests that if someone does have a preference, their friends do as well. I am willing to guess there are more that would say they watch hockey or drink Tim's than dont, which would suggest their friends are similar. That is how polls work.

Hence those that are preferred or supported by a perceptive majority over a lengthy period of time become iconic. Tim's and Hockey in Canada....are iconic, although as Margo stated, hockey is on the wane. Due mostly to increased percentage of immigrants, lack of available ice time in many communities and the influence of technology on adolescents.

Where's my touque with the Maple Leaf on it? Hmmmmmmmm, I think I stored it with my mukluks. I'm cookin' up a big feed of moose and Jigg's Dinner (if anyone wants to drop by).

You Might Be Canadian If...

* You bring a portable TV on a camping trip so that you don't miss Hockey Night.
* You can repeat the entire Molson's Canadian 'The Rant'.
* You dismiss all beers under 6% as "for children and the elderly."
* You know that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) don't always look like that.
* You cried when Gus "drowned" on Road To Avonlea.
* You think it's normal to have a grain elevator in your backyard.
* You watch MuchMusic constantly, in the hopes of occasional fleeting glimpses of The Tragically Hip.
* You have an Inuit carving by your bedside with the rationale, "what's good enough protection for the Prime Minister, is good enough for me!"
* You send angry letters to the CBC demanding the return of the Hinterland Who's Who spots so you can finally find out what happens to the arctic ptarmigan in winter.
* You think Great Big Sea isn't Atlantic-centric enough.
* Your backpack has more than one Canadian flag iron-on (and you always have room for more).
* You know the French equivalents of "free", "prize" and "no sugar added", thanks to your extensive education in bilingual cereal packaging.
* You know more than 3 guys named Gordon.
* You think Ashley MacIssac isn't Celtic enough.
* You can do the hand actions to Sharon, Lois and Bram's "Skin-a-marinki-dinki-do".
* You had a crush on Joey Jeremiah from Degrassi Junior High.
* You know that a "Premier" isn't a baby born a few months early.
* You actually watch The Gemini Awards, The Genie Awards, and The Juno Awards. You wonder why Stompin' Tom doesn't get his own category in all three. You scream passionately at the television when your favourite Canadian performers are overlooked by their respective academies.
* You think -10 C is mild weather.
* You have twins named Wayne and Gretzky (alternately Gordie and Howe).
* You dressed as Bruno Gerussi for Halloween. You spent hours sifting through garbage on the beach to prepare for the role.
* You substitute beer for water when cooking.
* You know that the 'Extra Creamy' in Kraft Extra Creamy Dinner is 'add more milk.'
* You prefer Elvis Stojko when he has 'hockey hair' - a.k.a. 'the mullet' or 'the shorty-longback'.
* You recognize: CPP, RSP, and CCM.
* You refuse to consume chocolate that doesn't come in either Smarties, Coffee Crisp, or Laura Secord format.
* You die a little inside if you can't get your Tim's double-double every morning.
* Someone accidently stepped on your foot. You apologize.
* You stepped on someone's foot. You apologize, then apologize for making them apologize.
* You've actually said, "Stay where yer at, 'till I gets where yer to."
* Your Saturday nights in the Atlantic provinces include eating beans and brown bread as you watch Hockey Night in Canada.
* You know that the Canadian Alliance is just the Reform Party with better hair.
* You're not offended by the term "HOMO MILK"
* You eat chocolate bars, not candy bars.
* You drink Pop, not Soda.
* You know that a Mickey and 24's mean, "party at the camp, eh!!!"
* You know that a pike is a type of fish, not part of a highway
* You drive on a highway, not a freeway
* You have Canadian Tire money in your kitchen drawers.
* You know what a touque is.
* You know that the last letter of the English alphabet is always pronounced "Zed"
* You live in a house with no front step, but the door is one meter up from the ground.
* Your local newspaper covers the national news on 2 pages, but requires 6 pages for hockey.
* You know that when it's 25 degrees outside, it's a warm day.
* You know how to pronounce and spell "Saskatchewan"
* "Eh?" is a very important part of your vocabulary, and is more polite than, "Huh?"
* You call it a BUN not a "Roll"
* Its called a WASHROOM not a lavatory or powder room or rest room.
* You know that in Canada the mosquitoes have landing lights
* You have 10 favourite recipes for moose meat.
* You know that Canadian Tire on any Saturday is busier than the toy stores before Christmas.
* You owe more money on your snowmobile than on your car.
* The most effective mosquito repellent is a shotgun.
* Your snow blower gets stuck on the roof.
* You find -40C a little chilly.
* The municipality buys a Zamboni before a bus.

You may be a little too Canadian if...

* You wonder why there isn't a 5 dollar coin, as you can only use more change.
* You spend hours in the dark making scale models of the Avro Arrow and cursing the Diefenbaker government.
* You think there isn't enough Queen on our currency.
* You use a red pen on your non-Canadian textbooks and fill in the missing 'u's from labor, honor, and color.
* You automatically read 'Z' as 'Zed' and don't give a damn that it doesn't rhyme with "now I know my abcs".
* When abroad, you have a cold fear that somebody might mistake you for an American. You make a point of deliberately being kind to locals just to make it clear you are a Canadian

Although *Golfgirl* did a great job of explaining how things become icons... for whatever it is worth, the 80% statistic I mentioned is from historical television ratings and the NHL - it wasn't my opinion and thus, isn't a matter of "Why is it people can only see other people as being just like they are."
