There are only two teams in the SPL who have a chance of winning it
Posted: 8/13/2009 7:00:24 AM
The Scottish League is a small league and it is true that either one of us is favourite to win it. Take the English Premiership, biggest league in the world, most funded, most sponsorship and Tv rights and yet only 4 teams have a chance of winning it (until someone upsets the applecart - Man City maybe). Rangers and Celtic truly are two big fish in a small pond but faithfully they are both supported to the tune of 50-60 thousand fans every other Saturday…more than Chelski (for a top four side) and dare I say Liverpool (my English side). Both Rangers and Celtic struggle with the finances we are dealt, we also struggle in Europe thanks to our other Scottish sides not doing their bit to help that co-efficiency thing! The finances at Rangers are truly miserable at the moment and it is difficult to see no investment in the side but thats what we have to live with and support regardless. I’m glad Celtic overcame Moscow and have given themselves a chance of the CL this year. My gut feeling is that Arsenal will be too strong for Celtic, but if they did overturn Arsenal would it change peoples minds about the quality of Scottish football…I don’t think so and why should it, its not a great league.

I followed Albion's results all last season, and they had quite a good start. After five league games, their record matched that of Leeds (w2 d2 l1). Sadly, they failed to maintain that, and seemed to reach winter before winning at home.

The relegation battle was quite exciting (although probably not for the fans) and I was most relieved when they saved themselves in the final game against Stockport -though not half as relieved as my ex was...

I wish them well this season, except when they are playing Leeds, of course.

I thought The Withdean was quite a homely little ground. I went to the Albion/Leeds game as a guest of Tina and although I was in the middle of the home fans, I felt completely 'at home'. So much so that I felt able to stand up twice to salute our two goals. How many places can one do that, these days?

I'm in two minds about Falmer. Part of me thinks that the fans deserve a ground, but part of me thinks that it should not be in such a beautiful part of the South Downs. It's a great shame that the Goldstone was sold, and I'm aware that some Albion fans refuse to shop at Curry's or whatever now stand there!

I was at home in London during the Stockport game, and I was keeping an eye on all relevant games. Even Leeds were involved, playing Northampton who were one of the teams that could have relegated Albion. Tina couldn't get a ticket, and was out shopping to take her mind off it, but I kept her informed by text of any relevant goals. By the time Albion scored their winner, they were already 'safe', but you probably didn't know that at the time.

Don't despair! Losing to Swansea was no disgrace, and they were unlucky against Walsall - beautiful goal they scored, shame it was at the wrong end!

Best of luck this season!

What's so 'mighty' about a team that finished SECOND in the easiest league in the entire world?

I take it if the SPL is the easiest league in the entire world, that you have knowledge of every football league on the entire planet and can statistically put the SPL at the bottom?

I don't support the "mighty" Glasgow Celtic but I do support my home team as I'm sure many people do on here. If Scottish football doesn't agree with some people or they liken it to junior football, simple, don't watch it.

There's a few Scottish talents down south that came through the ranks here, someone must see something in our wee easy league, or English clubs wouldn't bother looking far less buying any of our players.

The team I support may play in the SPL but it has and always has had a fantastic youth set up, one of the best in Scotland and a few of our ex players have gone on to do very well for themselves down south.

Bravo Pauline!

Id have said the third division was the easiest league in the world until i watched dumarton play recently. although they got beat there was definately a good bit of football going on and the atmosphere within the crowd wasnt something you would feel at Ibrox, Hampden or Celtic Park in Parkhead

English people brand Scottish football as rubbish, its always the case yet how often have they or do they watch a scottish game. Both Celtic and Rangers have done exceptionally well in recent years they deserve a pat on the back.

i dont support the "might" Glasgow celtic or rangers, i support a second div team home and away and get far more satisfaction and joy being down on the terracing watching games every week not knowing how they are going to play or what the result is going to be

There are certain games throughout the season that you KNOW 100% that celtic or rangers WILL win, wheres the fun in that?

Pauline makes a valid point - there's a few Scottish talents down south that came through the ranks here.

The point i would like to make about football is that so many of the comments here are slating other teams or pointing out who is going to win what league.

WHO CARES. arent people suppose to support football because they love the beautiful game and not simply for the glory of a win?

One of the greatest ever Leeds players was a Jock... Billy Bremner. You only have to go onto almost any Leeds website and most front pages will have some reference to Billy...

Then you have the Gray brothers Eddie an Frank..Joe Jordan,Gordon McQueen etc etc
Just wish there were more like them coming thru the ranks to put a bit of bite into some teams...an give out some shoe.

I know a lot of Motherwell fans who take a keen interest in how Leeds are doing and have done for a long time. Probably because of the McAllister connection.

For anyone out there who might admit to supporting Stockport county, I must say I am so far really impressed with Jim Gannon.

First class if you like going into your own ground and hearing embarassing sectarian chants that the SFA turn a blind eye to, or people who can't be bothered going into Glasgow to get a ticket for their own ground, so they just sit in yours, and celebrate when they score. I'd love to see me try that at Parkhead or Ibrox, but we get treated so badly there, I don't give them my money. Some decent supporters in the middle of all the sectarian nonsense but the fact that Celtic and Rangers never play a home game on the same day says it all. No place for that amount of hatred in Scottish football and it's not rivalry, it's hatred.

The knuckledraggers of Scottish football.

Yeah, shame about Brighton, felt for Graeme Smith, didn't have much chance at any of the goals from what I heard.

You could launch them on a rocket to the moon and I wouldn't give a toss.
There's nothing boring about watching Motherwell, that's one thing we don't do is boring style football.

I am a City fan, I reckon we'll finish in the top 4, definately. Looks like we also have Joleon Lescott, £22 million. Dunno why Moyles is so bothered, he did exactly the same when he was at Wolves, enticed him away with Premiership status, so what comes around goes around.

It is a great night for football if you come from Manchester and are a Blue. We beat Barcelona, European Champions, the Red scum got beat off Burnley. Massive.

Already answered it in an earlier post:

There are only two teams in the SPL who have a chance of winning it. Celtic are one of those teams - all they have to do is better one other team (Rangers) to win the SPL...

My opinion hasn't changed in the last fortnight!

My opinion is also supported by MSG 38:

There are certain games throughout the season that you KNOW 100% that celtic or rangers WILL win, wheres the fun in that?

They were being well beaten even before the sending-off, but Huddersfield were tipped to contend this season. Is Russell up to the job? I don't know, but he deserves more time to get his players motivated.

It would have been a long walk home....

Don't despair!

Do people actually grasp that the fact that Celtic and Rangers win the league every year is because they have more to spend than most of the rest of the clubs in the SPL put together?

I wonder what the value of the team my manager puts out every week is compared to Rangers? Our average gate is 6000 per week, theirs is over 40 ooo. It is not a level playing field.

Motherwell actually were 2nd and 3rd in the league 2 seasons in a row, we were also 3rd the season before last. It's not because it's such an easy league that Celtic and Rangers always win it, it's because they have the money to spend to get the bigger and better names in. They can also buy up promising young talent from other SPL clubs and bench them rather than having them as opposition.

They also get a bigger share of TV money because more of their games are televised.
Trying to spend big to compete with the likes of the Old Firm almost put my club out of business, we simply do not have the fan base to be able to rake in the gate money and associated other things like advertising, the big 2 will have more profitable deals.

Their merchandise is also everywhere, we have one shop at the ground. It's not because it's an easy league, it's because the rest of the ten teams are competing with 2 teams who have had until fairly recent times an open chequebook policy when it has come to signings and who have been able to pay players massive salaries.

Compare that with the rest, there's no other team that even comes close.
