It seems the off-pitch agenda at the West Ham/Millwall game was being discussed, debated and directed as soon as the fixture was announced.

Millwall have claimed that they were excluded from those discussions by both West Ham and the police, and this led to some crazy decisions being taken north of the river. Why were so many tube stations closed down? Why were the local pubs not closed down? Why did West Ham fail to provide enough away tickets, despite a direct request from Millwall?

Having sat with rival fans at rugby matches, I know you can be passionate about your team but not want to hurt the oppositions fans.

The same happens at rugby league games. I was always disappointed to see some of the trouble-makers down The Shay behaving themselves perfectly well when up at Thrum Hall. Why was it that their anger towards opposing fans was reserved only for Halifax Town's games and not for Halifax RL's?

Chelsea banned from 2 transfer window...until 2011

Could this see Chelsea go into free fall what with an new coach and 4 key players going to play in the African cup of nations come january.

Could players hold the club to ransom, ask for more wages or threaten to leave???

How much of this is really about politics rather than football. Surely they must appeal.

Certainly thrown things wide open again.

I couldn't actually believe the Chelsea story when I first read it. If they kept their first team playing until the ban was lifted the average age of the team would well into the late 20's, maybe even early 30's which would have a massive affect on their future aspirations.

It does seem very harsh banning Chelsea from signing any new players until 2011.

I find it very hard also to believe that they are the only team to have broken this rule.

I don't think it will have any effect on them this season though and still consider them title favourites.

They have a big and good enough squad to cope even if their likely appeal is unsuccessful.

Possibly, but they are the only team to have been found guilty of doing it in this country.

Good weekend, results-wise - Leeds go marching on, BHA managed their first win of the season, and England won a meaningless game....

Can't wait for Wednesday, when we should qualify for the finals!

I've got little to get excited about this football season, given that the Old Farm (sic) have killed Scottish football, to the point where there is no competition and the game is as rife with sectarian bigotry as ever. Let them bugger off to England if they want to go.

Saying that, I wouldn't wish them two upon the fine English game...

You mean the dream team of Muttley and Scott Leitch doesn't excite you?

@Pauline:

I'm delighted with the appointment of McGhee (and his Asst. Leitch) but the Club bankrupted itself by binning the previous clown and his 2 lackeys (because they were awarded 3yr extensions a year before, hence the huge pay-off) so they have no money to spend and have to rely on kids to get them through what will almost certainly be a long season. A transitional year, at best.

Good luck to Motherwell, too. They're a good club and have made a good appointment in Gannon. I live a kick in the erse awa fae Stockport and he worked well there. If only one of us could knock the Bigot Brothers off their perch...

@Amarillo:

I hope for your sakes the Chairman of Bolton doesn't get his wish, with the EPL two-tier proposal, which would allow the Gruesome Twosome to enter your neck of the woods. Trust me, you don't want the Sectarian bile, or the cheating, or the Masonic refereeing. Saying that, the soap-dodging glory-hunters would soon disappear, once the trophies dried up and they fail to get Champions League football on a plate every year...

So was I when Muttley went to Motherwell but after one fab season he started whoring himself to every other team out there, didn't take the Hearts job because Boyle told him if he stepped on the plane it would be p45 time for him. Obviously wanted the Celtic job.
Ran the Motherwell team into the ground, didn't offer players new contracts as he knew he was leaving. Terrible tactician, 7 game streak of Motherwell losing, nothing changed.
Plays players out of position, some terrible formations even when it wasn't working, he wouldn't change it. Punted all the youth players out on loan.
Conducted himself well when Phil died but a total one trick pony. Don't expect him to show you loyalty he has none. Fantastic first season at Motherwell, no more no less.
As soon as anyone else comes in for him, he's going to be offski.

Gannon is a breath of fresh air. Talks the talk and looks like he walks it as well.

You said quite a lot, actually!

You'll be going to see England play a game in which they can progress to the next stage of a competition but in which they cannot be knocked out!

I can't remember the last time such a situation occurred......but I'm sure someone will remind me!

Enjoy the game!

Possibly World Cup 2006, England won the first two games against T&T and Paraguay and the last game was against Sweden to see who topped the group but passage to the next round was already secured.

England have looked good throughout qualification, especially going forward with question marks over the defence which is the opposite to the past. After all the defenders are back and fit it looks good for 2010.

Good to see that with qualification getting closer that Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic are all in with a shout of at least the play offs, shame about Wales.

In that case, that game doesn't fit both criteria!

We had already secured progression to the next stage.....and neither did the game in which we qualified (btw wasn't it Ecuador, not Paraguay?) as we had a final left in the group stage.

Yes, your right.....how about the game before then....

England win first game against Paraguay, They go into the next game against Trinidad and if they win they progress like they did or if they had lose it they had another chance against Sweden. The draw between the other two teams in the group in their first games meant that as long as England won the second game they would go through to the second round of the competition hopefully meeting both requirements or your criteria.

I googled to check facts this time and it was Paraguay - but I will admit that you more than planted a seed of doubt.
Ecuador was who England played in that second round.

First off, thanks for pointing out my error as regards Paraguay/Ecuador! Just goes to show I don't always use google before posting!

Second, the game against T&T was indeed identical in criteria to tonight's game against Croatia, in that we can progress to a next stage but we couldn't be eliminated!

So, a second beer for you!

Ecuador was who England played in that second round.

And thus adding to a growing collection of football shirts bought and worn once by some Scottish fans!

Personally I've better things to do with my time than buy football shirts of England's opponents. I'd rather put the money into my own team.

However, I'm sure for those who did, they got well worn.

Just watched the City game, what a result. I know that no game in the Premiership is easy, but that was City's first test. I think we kind of destroyed Arsenal, a little bit gutted when we went 3-1 up, had City to win 2-1, if that had been the end result I would have won £50.

Thought Lesgot played excellent, really contained Arsenal attack, but for me the man of the match was Adebayor, not just at going forward, he also defended well.

Adebayor, Adebayor. Hung like an elephant, his wife's a bit sore.
