Do women cook anymore??

I cook and love to cook. I have 3 boys who have been taught to cook also. Cooking doesn't always have to be looked at like its a chore. I have enjoyed lots of family time with my kids -- all of us in the kitchen cooking and FYI also all of us cleaning up.
And cooking with someone special sounds like a great date to me. So OP -- go buy a cookbook, get your girl and your buns in the kitchen and get to cookin'.

Exactly, women who know how to cook should, when possible, teach their sons as well.

I've had to teach a few women how to cook after I learned it from my mother. Once you learn good food you will die for it. The taste buds are developed at an early age, must be. Cooking takes tremendous work, foresight, intuition, courage, and determination. It's a full time job, talk to any chef.

Good food makes the children more intelligent and creative. That's my hunch.

I am excellent cook. I love to cook. The more skills we have in life but the better it is for them! What bothers me is that men in thier 40s who do not know how to cook that well!!! My mother never held my hand, she taught me life skills to last a life time! I think some of these guys and girls were babied when they were growing up and they did not have to lifta hand. I am glad my parents were strict with me otherwise I would have not been a great cook!

Such a silly question in my opinion when at the very least, the question should have been do PEOPLE cook anymore.

Yes, I cook. So do my daughters and my grand-daughter cook...my grand-daughter(15) can also make cakes, cookies, pies - she has prepared and rolled her own dough and assembled her own pies from scratch - she's also helped me make various fancy and/or time consuming specialty (traditional, holiday, etc.) dishes.

My "specialty" though is normal everyday cooking and what I particularly enjoy is cooking on a budget, even when there is no budget. I enjoy seeing what I can come up with that is good to the palate, good (or at least not bad) for the body, and good on the pocket book.

So most of my meals end up being "rated" by me/my family for their overall value and I either keep or ditch them accordingly...so my meatloaf that we all like (but that I wouldn't necessarily serve to company) gets something like a 9...it's cheap, it's good, it's versatile (we like it both hot from the oven as a meal or cold in sandwiches), it's quick and easy to prepare, the ingredients which are things I have on hand at all times are healthy enough (lean hamburger, oatmeal as filler, onions, etc,) and when served with fresh potatoes and carrots, another constant at our house, and another fresh (or frozen) vegetable, it rightly earns a 9, possibly a 10 in my book.

On the other hand, another favorite at our house is a scallop and broccoli Alfredo sauce served on fresh fettuccine noodles...yum...but that one earns no more than a 5...it's rich - high in calories and fat, it's expensive, I don't always have the ingredients at home, and even though it's super easy to make, it's not something we eat often - it's more like an occasional treat. Hahahaha...and I can just imagine how this must all sound...I swear I'm not insane, obssessed or anything like that and up until just recently, I did have a life;)

I have always been the cook in every relationship I have had. Love to cook. This would be the lowest priority of anything I can think of to me as to a woman being relationship material.

If she will come in the kitchen with a big smile on her face and pour the chef a glass of wine while he prepares dinner is much higher on my list of things that is important.

Many women have this notion that all they have to do for their man is be present. We should be grateful for that alone. Many are extremely selfish only looking to benefit for them self. If she hesitates when asking her to do anything or forgets, kick her ass out of there.

Yes they do...i for one...cook everyday...was taught at a very young age....i was never catered to ...so ...i guess it depends on how you were brought up..and...what was important for the children in the family to learn...both my brothers can cook well...along with all my sisters....and we made it a point to teach my nieces and nephews at an early age....but then...no matter what you learn...you have to want to do it...

The same can be said for some men. I am honest and a good cook, and both of those traits do not seem to matter at all to men that I have known or dated.

I can cook.....I can cook good...why do I cook because even though eating out is pretty simple and easy I like "homemade" food the best. Like a pizza would you rather someone say you have to have so much toppings or would you rather just do it yourself.

I eat out a lot because I hardly ever pack my lunch for my break at work. So enough is enough.

On to the actual post saying women have to cook is bad. To me that's like a gender slam on guys have to know how to do home improvement. Today there is hardly any gender based "jobs" at home or even in the workplace. I know men who can cook better than my grandmother and I know women who can build a deck better than my grandfather. Its the world today. Face the facts and get with the program women don't have to cook as much as men don't have to build a deck.

Best of luck to everyone

I hate to say this but.. I know exactly what you mean! I don't know if it's how I was raised, or my motherly instincts, or what, it is but I guess I still feel the way to a guys heart is through his stomach.
I actually get kind of bummed when my man or my kids don't get excited or complimentary about what I've cooked. Cooking is one of the simple pleasures in life. Everyone has to eat. It's a great bonding experience for a couple and look at other cultures too. Food and feasting is what brings generations together and people together. It just seems natural to me and it's a great way to show love for someone. Not the ONLY way, and it shouldn't be abused, but it is a big thing. BTW... I think it's nice when a guy cooks too but if he doesn't then he's taking me out that night! lol

I suppose thats a good thing for the frozen food manufactures, they can sell frozen food junk or the hot foods island does good with those foulks. As a man I dont have time stopping for unhealthy fast foods, I learnt to cook back when I left home at the age of 18, four months of eggs, hot dogs and hamburgers just didnt cut it much longer.

Sashimiboy wrote:Not to say that's all that women are good for or that women belong in the kitchen, but it bothers me when I see women almost proudly proclaiming that they can't cook like its a good thing. I don't think men and women are completely equal. We each do certain things better than the other. So make me a ham sammich and ill assemble that table we bought at ikea.

And why would a women need you to assemble her table? And why cannot you fix yourself the sandwich? Most women I know work outside the home and dont have the mindset that their head is for crushing beer cans. Doesnt mean women cannot be great cooks, they can. Just as they can be great surgeons, lawyers, pilots, engineers.

Would like to know what you do better than a woman. Besides get an erection.

I love to cook for the man in my life and loved ones. I'm Italian and I guess I "love "people with food. I owned my own resturant and really enjoyed creating dishes for others. Now I cook for friends and family all the time.

It's a shame when a woman doesn't know how to cook. It's not rocket science. I've known how to cook for a long time. Only recently have I begun to expand my repetoire and learn how to cook different things. In my opinion the best way to cook is to cook big portions and freeze what you don't eat for later. Then all you have to do is thaw it out (to me the fastest way to do that is to let it sit in its plastic container in hot water for an hour), nuke it, and eat it. Job done.

Actually, the world's greatest chefs have always been men...from the days of the first caveman cooking for himself, right up to the present. I enjoy it when a woman can cook well, but if she can't...I can. Whether making tuna tacos, or something a bit more exotic-such as Caribbean Chicken-I manage well enough.

Well, last time I looked...I was still female...and I like to cook...unfortunately I no longer cook for the 7 or 8 people that I always cooked for when my children were young. LOL! I HAVE however, successfully managed to get my grandchildren off of that NASTY Kraft Mac n cheese!!!! NOW, they much prefer my homemade...just the way MY grandma taught me to make it!

My daughter, with threats of forcing me to go to Bob Evans and eat their nasty gravy, always seems to talk me into making biscuits and gravy for breakfast when she is visiting.

Yesterday, for family dinner...we had pork roast with saurkraut, buttered noodles, candied yams...and blueberry pie...baked by Granny's own 2 little hands! LOL! Remember, the secret to a nice flaky crust is COLD water!!!

I actually love to cook and bake, though I don't do it much since I got separated. I'll still bake things for my neighbors and family members and if I have company, but when you're only cooking for one and a half (My picky eight year old daughter. :p ) it doesn't make much sense.

I used to think this was an endearing quality in a woman.... Then a man friend of mine informed me that it's 'motherly' and is viewed as 'needy'. I'm at a loss there, hehe. Here I thought that baking cookies for a gentleman that I liked might be a nice gesture! :p

No they don't. Every so often I drive though to grab some fast food......and I see 80 percent of the people in line are women....whether young or old, married or not, I hear them ordering for a whole family.......I feel bad for them. If I were their boyfriend/husband I would cook for them instead of letting them go run off for some fast food. I explained this crazy thing to my mom, she said she thinks it's because there are more single women in San Diego......not!! Anyway, I don't mind cooking if it's her going to some fast food and grab us something or nothing. I'm not the greatest cook, but I do alright and I'm more than able and willing.

I would say in this economy it's expensive to eat out all the time especially for a whole family. and fast food is not real food - it fills you up but that's it. The mothers who feed their kids that constantly are doing a huge disservice to their families.
As another poster just said, cooking is not rocket science. It's mixing things together and heating things up. Any one who can read directions or a recipe should be able to cook and improve with practice. If ANYONE past college age cannot cook at least basic stuff, I would question their intelligence above all else.
