I have two cats, Miley and Montana (my 7 yr old named them! lol) and ever since ive had them from kittens I have fed them on Royal Canin Kitten food, its about 30 quid for a bag that lasts roughly 50 days, split between two of them, i buy a bag every 4 weeks. Works out expensive but vet and some kitten expert type advised me it had one of the highest meat contents around, it is a dry food. I did have them on kitty milk as well for the first 5/6 months but gradually weaned them off and now they have tap water, I make sure I re fill the water bowl 2-3 times per day as they both drink out of it and they have dry only diet..

Have started finding them playing with dead birds and dead mice in the back garden like, so they must be doing alright on the old 'meat' front lol...

Not too expensive - above £3.50 per week for each cat - you could buy cheaper tinned stuff but that is never recommended however much the tv ads tell you otherwise, as vets say they are full of fillers etc and the only wet food which is recommended are Hills and Royal Canin.

-------------------------------

I also feed one of my cats Royal Canin but it is a prescription one called Urinary S/O. He will be on this prescription dry food for life as he had crystals in his ureter and bladder, which the vet caught in time as he would have died next morning had I not taken him in. The whole operation cost me £640, but thankfully Tesco Insurance paid me back.
Neutered male cats are prone to crystals in the bladder and ureter and especially indoor black neutured males apparently - and more so if they are overweight.

Some brands such as Hills and Royal Canin may seem expensive but they are superior quality. What I also do is to make sure my three cats have clean litter as they are indoor cats and urinary problems can come about also if they hold off using a litter tray for as long as they can due to wet litter. I also add several teaspoons of water to their dry food. This doesn't make the food moist and they drink the water first and the dry food is still crunchy as it hasn't had time to absorb the water.

I've had a look today and found a brand of pouches called Hi-life that are 50 % chicken ..... unfortunately on closer inspection they are made in Thailand....... any thoughts on animal welfare in other countries???....... or am i just over-thinking this one??

I think you're right to be wary. There is chicken, and there is 'chicken.

I bought Tiger some chicken-based food the other day from Sainsbury's own range - he wouldn't touch the stuff, even though he's quite happy with the rest of the range.

Oh, and as for the 'beggars can't be choosers' situation, it doesn't apply to stray cats, apparently!

Most of my cats are happy with Felix and Go-cat. They were fed an exclusively dry diet until Tedward developed a life threatening urinary tract infection. He was hospitalised for a week, had an intra-abdominal cathetar and went into kidney failure. We were very, very lucky to get him back. Since then, they've had the wet food at the end of the day. Urinary tract infections are a risk in neutered males fed an exclusive dry diet.

I also have an elderly mog who has a thyroid problem. She gets a rich nibble in the morning so that we can hide her tablets in it. She also acts just like a dog in that whenever anybody is eating, she is sat at your feet shouting to have some. She loves chocolate muffins and ice cream too. Humphrey loves cheese and can detect the rustle of the cheese packaging at 500 paces.
There's no sign of any of the little sods at the moment but come ten o'clock tonight they will all be in the hall, glaring at me and demanding to be fed.

It always helps, if you want the desired poster to respond, if you let them know you are addressing them.

The two quoted statements are most unhelpful.......why not try again so that any queries or comments you have receive their due attention?

It doesn't work like that, unfortunately.

If you want to post, any of the 'post reply' buttons will ensure that your comments appear as the last post - you aren't posting so that only a certain poster will 'get' your post. Your posts appear for everyone on the site to see.

To ensure that the person you intended DOES get your message, you should email them.

BTW your comments about Iams were most helpful towards those whose cats find dried food to be dangerous to their health.

Generally i feed my cats to the local chinese. I get through about 4 - 5 a month. Not sure what their meat content is but as its generally in a sauce it tastes ok. Im sure they dont put a whole one in each meal as that isnt cost effective.
