I prefer to put pics up of me doing the things I enjoy, such as hiking etc. That way women won't get any nasty surprises if I meet them, they see me as I am in my pics.

have to agree with all the other posts. These pics can be photoshopped so much that the real you doesn't come out.

If you're going to have a professional photo in there, be sure to have 'real' candids too.
It's nice to look your best, I get that. Helps the confidence, don't you think? It helped mine when I had Glamour Shots done some time ago. But you won't find my Glamour Shots on here.

You can have good pics that are 'real' - outside in the daytime usually does it. Sunglasses can look great, but at least one pic where we can see the eyes - show the real you - not all posed and airbrushed - that's not what we're all like everyday. :)
I'll get dressed up to go out, but sometime the guy is going to see me without the makeup... may as well see what he thinks up front. :P

You can get a friend who knows how to hold a camera to take a decent pic of you that's real and looks good. If you haven't already gotten some tips, message me and I'll share some more tips. :)

First, there is a difference between vanity (glamour) photos and professional pics.
A true pro can take natural shots but knows how to address lighting issues, posing and other considerations that will present a more flattering end product without looking like you are presenting a portfolio to a modeling agency.

I like to see dressed up pix as well as regular every day shots. I think one should have pictures that accurately portray ones self. Close ups for the face and full body shots. I stay away from "just face" shots or "suspect" pix like: peeking out from behind something pix, overexposed pix, looking up at the camera pix, pucker-kissy face pix. (totally ridiculous), 75' away pix, faded pix from the 1980's and all the other dishonest, purposely designed to trick pix. I say all this not to be mean but from experience. I've been on several dates were the girls didn't look anything like their pic. The one girl was so skinny, I though she should have some broth for dinner, thinking real food might kill her in her condition (she has a 75' away pix), another girl had acne scaring so bad on her face, you could have set a golf ball on it without a tee and it would have stayed (overexposed pix)... Now it just pisses me off to the point were I feel like doing a "drive by", or "dine and dash". LOL It's all about being honest...

Any pictures are okay but don't hold your old girlfriends, any children, buddies, and pets.

I think professional photos done in a casual manner are good, but those where you look different than in person no way.. They actually kind of make me stop looking at a profile.

Find someone who knows how to take a photo. Outdoor in shade with simple dedicated flash or a piece of foamboard to reflect light up into face. I use this a lot for casual photos and save the studio stuff for corporate or family shots.

Here's the wonderful thing! You can have more than one picture posted. If I could put my Senior picture from Highschool up here, I would. Because in my current picture I had shaved my head after graduating HS and it don't look so great! I like seeing people with 2-3 different types of photos up there, especially when there's a variety of scopes involved. I should follow my own advise! someone lend me a digital camera!

Why are people sooo obsessed with pictures and profiles?

Just like packaging in general, it's usually all bollocks anyway.

Just be your damn self man!

We already live in a World filled with too much illusion and BS!

They do. But you need to ensure that your friends agree that they look like who you really are. Never photoshop. Be yourself in your pics, and anything will suffice :)

All in all, some real good advice here. I guess I'm sort of on the fence myself as it's hard to take a photo of yourself and not make it look staged, then again, I don't want everybody in my world knowing I'm out looking for somebody - if you have the all-too-well-meaning friends who try to fix you up you'll know exactly where I'm coming from.

The gent earlier who said he had a pro photographer take his shots makes a lot of sense, since a pro usually has very good equipment and the skill to make a natural photograph. I've looked at tons of candid photos taken by friends and while they are memorable to me, they aren't of good enough quality for a variety of reasons. The only thing I wonder about it how much a pro photog will charge you to drag them all over the place to get a handful of decent shots? I suppose in the end the final product will let you know if it was worth the effort.

I guess I'll go pitch that 60's Polaroid and find somebody with some picture taking talent!

A set of professional pictures, worth paying for, should be made with this use in mind. Shop around a bit and find someone who at least says they know what you're asking for and go for it. Might not be good enough the first time, but just try again. A good friend who is a decent photographer can do this too, but poor pictures greatly reduce the effectiveness of anything else you do here. Good professional pictures should look like amateur pictures, showing you in different aspects of your life, illustrating and highlighting your attractions.

Stay away from professional shots.

People want to see the real you, I mean your not always going to look like those pro pics.

Have real pics of yourself showing you in jeans, thsirts, maybe one in nice clothes, doing your favorite hobbies.

Trying not to start a redundant thread so I thought this might fit in here, becuase I just realized that in some cases probably a professiona picture would have been so much better.

Has this ever happened to anyone that enjoys the forums. You see this one person responding to many of the same threads as you and then finally decide to check out the profile.
Low and behold the forum profile pic you just assumed was a guy turns out to be a girl??

What was really interesting is some of the pics on the profile reflect their gender so much better and make the person look quite lovely.

I would rather see the everyday look of a woman.
And I think those 'glamour shots' are so tacky and cheap looking. Especially those where the woman is holding a flower. They're just terribly done. Now if someone had a photo done by a real professional, one who photographs models, those look nice. However, on dating sites, most of those professional model shots are used by scammers.

Glamour shots just seem so 80's. I wonder how many are FROM the 80's. I suppose if you could get a photographer to take photos of you doing things, etc. etc. Candid shots are nice as well. I can't be bothered. I just take some pics with my celphone. I keep them current, date them. Face shots, and full body shots.

No surprises.

Wow.. this question caught my eye right before I was ready to decide that I WAS too tired to type more..

Professional pictures.. Hmmmm

Well for women.. It's the "boudoir" picture with a "boa" or some other straight-to-the-face-shot-where-she-is-laying-obesebelly-down-to-try-to-fake-you-out-of-showing-she-is-HUGE picture you are talking about?

Or the guy in the suit and tie.. the ONE time he wore it to someone's funeral but he prefers BVD's and a "beater" as his main pic? You mean THAT professional pic?

I know.. we should ALL go have our pictures taken by the photog at the police station that took Nick Nolte's and Mel Gibson's DUI pic for our profiles.

I can see it now.. "When I Was Arrested Mug Shot" dot com..

What makes an impression to THIS man.. a REAL man.. is seeing someone I met online.. having the big brass ovaries to actually go MEET in person.

Yeah.. THAT makes an impression

It's interesting how many people are turning this into a professional vs candid debate...

... some of the best professional shots ARE candid shots. Don't get the "business card" pro pics - get some of you doing the things you enjoy / look artsy and you'll do well. Anything that looks remotely like it could have been taken at K-mart = no good.

you only need 4 pics:

-one nice face pic
-one full body shot
-one playful shot
-one shot of you doing your favorite hobby or sport

Professional pics are full of props and soft lighting....you are better off taking your own pics or have someone take em.....natural looking gives a better impression when you meet, than a vanity shot.....which you will never live up to after those pics are taken anyways...

Not always, I will do shots for singles events from time to time and the conditions are they will get a very high resolution photo with correct color and no editing will be done period other than cropping. If a woman is seeking glamor shots for a dating site I usually don't do them unless they agree to no editing and no pro makeup either.

Yeah, what the others said, be real. Pro shots of you, all glammed up and airbrushed, are sure to exhibit a huge let-down sigh when you actually meet.

you think that professional pictures make a better impression than "normal" pics?

Absolutely. Then you will meet, look nothing like your photos, and that will be the end of it. If your goal is to get more mail.. have professional shots taken.

If your goal is to have success.. use candid shots doing normal things. When you meet, you will look better than your photos and make a nice first impression. Now, I said use candid shots.. not crappy shots. In this digital age you can click off a thousand pictures and by sheer luck alone you should be able to get a couple very nice ones.
