What's Wrong With Country Music?
Posted: 8/10/2009 4:21:55 AM
I do like a lot of the new country stuff (Reba is ace, Urban), but I'm not ure about the dressing up as a cowboy malarky, I was at a charity fun day yesterday and the local cowboy club put on a show. lots of gunfights and fast draw contests, it was entertaining for the kids but the compere sounded like Johnny Vegas on acid, and it seems in every cowboy club they have folk called Montana and Tulsa, whats all that about?

I was once asked to join in a line dance at the local working mens club, "not me mate" said I, "after 11 pints I cant even walk in a straight line"!

."depressing" and "whinny voices" going on to say that Johnny Cash had an awful voice as did Elvis (may the Lord preserve you!). Elvis, the best entertainer to ever have lived.... definitely a case of what is one man's meat is another man's poison

Cant fault that statement

N (26)

Rock'n'roll evenings, 70s nights, punk nights, new romantics.... whatever the genre, many will enjoy the added experience of dressing up... it's the same with country music.

Some are a bit OTT and in their dreams imagine themselves as cowboys, but what the hell.....

there are worse things that people can get up to than dress up and enjoy themselves (it should also be noted that many 'cowboy' clubs do a lot to raise money for charity).

I would like to draw the destinction however between the country and the western. Not all (not most nowadays) of country music concerns itself with cowboys riding across the wide open plains - much is contemporary, urban, earthy and 'real', it is after all the voice of the working class (folk music of the USA).

EDITS:

KL (28) What? If you'd bothered to have read comments posted here then you'd have realised that no-one is excluding other genres of music. It just so happens that this particular thread relates to country music! Why don't you set up a thread on metal, rap, dance, or whatever..... ?

BE (29) there are many many modern country songs that are edgy and it's a pity that so many people (like yourself) have been influenced and put off, apparently for life, by the slush of the past. Thanks for contributing.

O (30) I see you've taken on board the fact that most modern country music does not lend itself to over slushy sentimentality - it's always good when a thread is given a bit of thought!

BE (15) has only heard, or can only recollect the naff songs as described earlier. Whether she has heard the vast array of modern country that is bright, cheerful, current, humorous etc (see SS (21) for an extensive list of artistes) or maybe she's heard music she liked but didn't attibute it to country singers.... have you heard Alison Krauss with Robert Plant on the album "Raising Sand"? it's country BUT contemporary.

I'm sure there's probably some good songs out there but it's rarely played on mainstream radio and I'm sick of wholesome cos it reminds of me of Cliff Richard and he's such a bore. I did listen to Alison Krauss with Robert Plant and confess it's a bit more edgey than some of the songs I've heard, although I must admit I still have a bit of a sing song to "Stayand by ur Mayan" whilst ensuring there's a paper bag on standby

I never said its a bad thing, just something that I personally would not wish to be involved in, and if you had read my post properly I did state that it was being done for charity.

It's all a bit 'samey' and just reminds me of films showing people in a bar with the same sort of C and W music playing on the jukebox or stage. If I lived in some small US town I will probably be more into C and W than the classical music I am into now.

I am MASSIVE fan of country music and travel to Nashville every year for a 4 day music festival.

As for those people who have said things here about the whinney, twangy, stereotypical kind of stuff and the down trodden woman etc, I have listed some artists below for you to check out. Trust me you won't hear much in the way of the comments above, but you will hear some pretty rocky stuff.

Rascal Flatts (the whole of the Unstoppable album)
Martina McBride (I just call you mine, Ride)
Reba McEntire (Strange)
Miranda Lambert ( Kerosene, Gunpowder and Lead)
Trace Adkins (Swing)
Keith Urban (Anything at all by him!)
Little Big Town (Again anything by them!)
Lady Antebellum (Love don't live here)
Big & Rich (Save a horse ride a cowboy)
Kenny Chesney (Summertime)
Jason Aldean (Relentless, Johnny Cash, She's Country)
Jo Dee Messina (I'm done, My give a damns busted)
Sugarland (awesome band!, listen to Love, or Settlin' , Something More)

I do like the older original country too, but I think many people will be surprised at how the new stuff has moved on. I would be intersted to hear someone's comments on this thread after having listened to some of the recommendations above?

I've laid down a challenge there, anyone going to take me up on it?

All of the above produce quite amazing music, very heavily guitar led (rock style). Yes they do the ballads too, but very up to date

I'd have to concede that Keith Urban is pretty good and Rascal Flatts... quite like K D Laing too. The rest of it though... I struggle with. It's cheesy with extra cheese.

Recently got into a band that isn't that well known in this country - Rascal Flatts.......not a bad band to try out if you're not sure about country music....

I have them on my iPod, love their music! Also have Keith Urban and Dixie Chicks who I think are amazing.

Modern country has a lot of good stuff, but I don't enjoy the old stuff near so much.

It depends.
I'm not sure it's possible to categorize in a very simple way, I like lots of different styles of music, and some is influenced by country or C & W, and some is influenced by jazz, or blues, or African etc. most is a mixture of styles and influences
Here are some examples of artist I like, who sometimes do country music:
Bruce Springsteen,
Elvis Costello (Almost Blue, -Excellent, particularly side one!)
Cowboy Junkies
JJ Cale,
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young,
Neil Young,
Bob Dylan,
Eagles,
Joni Mitchell,
Simon & Garfunkel,
Van Morrison,
Leonard Cohen.
And many more.

YeeHaaaaa is right..the artists you mention have their basis in either folk or blues, but country music encompasses elements of those particular genres..

Leonard Cohen sings country? no way!!

Since when did Van Morisson do anything other than the blues?

Oh you mentioned The Eagles..that's acceptable..

Joni Mitchell..folksy and bluesy...

Elvis Costello..a man known for his love of music..but inspired by country music..was he? His adoration for his wife Diana Krall might suggest otherwise plus his fabulous versatility as a musician - I would accept that given his previous love and adoration for Cait O'RĂordain and the fact that he was a huge fan of the pogues that he was probably quite into folk music..

So what should I listen to of Elvis Costello's music as an expample of his being influenced by Country music then?

Leonard Cohen sings country? no way!!

Does a lovely version of "Tennessee Waltz" on the "Dear Heather" album,
and "Tower of Song" on "I'm Your Man" is quite country, I'll probably think of some more, but I can't now!

Since when did Van Morisson do anything other than the blues?

"Memories" on the "Enlightenment" album? Or maybe not? My head hurts!
I'll get back to this....

So what should I listen to of Elvis Costello's music as an expample of his being influenced by Country music then?

The album he made in Nashville! "Almost Blue", (probably the only one I really like of his! )
"Good Year for the Roses" is surely a country classic?
On the album it says;
Engineered by Ron "Snake" Reynolds, assisted by Fast Eddie Hudson!
they sound quite "country"....
yeha?.....

The whole album "Almost Blue" is full of covers by country stars, "Good Year For The Roses" was originally done by George Jones, husband of Tammy Wynette and a big country star in his own right, other tracks on the album were written by Hank Williams, Merle Haggard and Gram Parsons, it sure sounds like country to me!
