Cowboys win all the stats, the battle in the trenches and give the Saints their 2nd ass whipping in a year.

Ha! They got everything broken down except for the final score.

With the Cowboys season over the final score didn't matter in that game.

I agree Saints won and they will most likely get to the playoffs, bottom line is it's the final win or lose that gets a team to the next level. HOWEVER the journey does count. All teams will wane or wax as successful teams either from game to game or year to year, decade to decade. Looking at HOW they are waning or waxing is what makes those Wins and losses possible. So some poeple like to just know the final end result while others prefer to look at the end result AND the journey it took to get there. I don't see anything wrong with either view, really it's personal choice as to how a person looks at the game. But to say How a team loses or wins doesn't matter in my opinion is wrong. In fact that's WHY teams study tapes of themselves and of other teams.

Ha! They got everything broken down except for the final score.

Hmmmm Fletcher, this coming from a man that argued how Buffalo was a better team than it's W-L record. Really no difference here. We are arguing as to whether Dallas played a good a game against the Saints in spite of the loss, and that Saints did not "kick their azz".... LMAO just Pete Dear gets carried away.
BTW the final score was Saints 30, Dallas 27, I thought we all stated that several times.

LMAO just Pete Dear gets carried away.

Pete Dear you KNOW I had to throw that ONE in.

Yes, SweetNancy knows her football! It also seems that she is bound and determined to prove me wrong on this and I wish she had been able to watch the whole game so she would have a clearer perspective of how the game played out. Now I was starting with the basics of the line play and Sweet Nancy jumped way ahead past the basics, which is fine by me, but MGM, you may get lost in the discussion. SweetNancy also knows how to pick and choose stats in order to try and make her point. So, let me address this in the order that Sweet Nancy presented it.

Passing attempts: Brees 39, Kitna 42... Cowboys attempted MORE passes.
Average passing Gain: Saints 8.1 yards, Cowboys 7.3.... wow for a team that DOMINATED the line they only held the Cowboys down by 1.2 yards less on average, somehow if they dominated the differential of the 2 numbers should be a LOT larger.
Total yards passing, Saints 333, Cowboys 313... holy cow only a difference of 20, again if the D-line "dominated" the differnce would have been much bigger.

The proper way to compare those numbers, if you are attempting to access the average depth of the passes is not to compare the pass attempts with the yardage gained, but the completions. And as you said, the longer passes are riskier. Plus, you are not taking into consideration the YAK factor, as the Saints did miss several tackles allowing long gains on what were short passes.
Brees had 23 complete for 352 yards. An average of 15.3 yards per catch.
Kitna had 30 complete for 313 yards. An average of 10.4 yards per catch.
The three passes where the Saints missed tackles on short passes that went for long gains were two to Roy Williams for 24 and 47 yards and one to Felix Jones for 28 yards. These passes were no more than 5-6 yards each and the rest was YAK.
Remove those 3 plays from the stats and Kitna had 27 complete for 214 yards for an average of 7.9 yards per catch. Less than half of the Saints average. The longest pass completed by Dallas was a 20 yarder to Witten and next was a 17 yarder to Witten. The Cowboys only attempted 3 other long passes, all of which went incomplete.

I agree on only "some" of this, not all short passes are because a team can't run the ball. Some coaches (most in my opinion) design their plays to have a mix of runs and passes, in fact the better the offense the more they can "mix" it up with short, long passes, running up the middle or running to the outside. This is all part of that great chess game called "strategy" in football. Dallas usually doesn't JUST run the game, in fact why would they, they have some pretty good WR's and they use 3 TE's. However again lets just go with your theory again that Saints d-line wasn't letting Dallas successfully run the ball and look at some stats, BTW, I love these ones as compared to the passing ones:

I agree with you on the football philosophy, but this is well beyond the football 101 I was discussing, but let's move forward.

Total rushing yards, Saints 81, Dallas 144 ...wow Dallas had 63 more rushing yards.
Even without the 60 yd run by Austin Dallas would still have more running yards.
Average Rushing yards Saints 3.9 Dallas 4.5 Hmm Dallas averaged above the 3.5 you stated, and by your own definition as stated above it can be said the Dallas controlled the line of scrimmage when running the ball.
In fact Dallas had MORE 1st downs than the Saints, Dallas had 24 and Saints had only 21 .....oh and get this: 7 of those 24 1st downs that Dallas got were by rushing as compared to the Saints who out of their 21 1st downs 5 were by rushing. So by your own numbers given you can clearly see that Dallas offense line controlled the line better when running AND Dallas d-line held Saints running game to less than Dallas's.

Yes, SweetNancy, without the 60 yards end around by Austin, which should have been flagged and called back for an obvious offensive holding call, the Cowboys had 84 yards gained rushing on 31 carries and the Saints had 81 yards on 21 carries. Now let's qualify these numbers a little more by getting rid of the carry credited to Cowboy punter McBriar for 0 yards on the botched punt, and the 3 carries credited to Brees for -3 yards while in VICTORY formation in order to get a more accurate picture of the running game.
Now, the stats without Austin, McBriar and Brees' carries:
Dallas had 30 carries for 84 yards, an average of 2.8 yards per carry.
Saints had 18 carries for 84 yards, an average of 4.7 yards per carry.
I concede that Dallas had more first downs by rushing, but the Saints rushed the ball far better than the Cowboys!

Actually you forgot to mention that Barber ran for only 1 yard on 1 play because he got a TD... so he couldn't run anymore than 1 yard on that play.
Also if you noticed Dallas had almost double the amount of running yardage than the Saints and they averaged .6 more yards per carry than the Saints. Your stats aren't complete.
Saints had 4 players with running yards and Dallas had 7 so of course the individual runs may have been less AND 2 of those runs were for only 1 yard each because they were for TD's so again thats all they could run. In fact all 3 TD's by Dallas were the by running, lol so I don't know how you can say the Saints stopped Dallas running game and FORCED them to throw short yardage.

Sweet Nancy, the stats and your premise are all skewed by the one 60 yard run and had you looked closer into what you were comparing, you would have seen that!

Let's have a look at the drives.
Saints: 6 plays, 80 yards, TD
Cowboys: 5 plays, 16 yards, interception by DE Smith
Saints: 4 plays, 1 yard, 50 yard FG
Cowboys: 3 plays, -13 yards, punt
Saints: 6 plays, 58 yards, TD
Saints start with the 3 man defensive front, non-attacking defense
Cowboys: 11 plays, 59 yards, turnover on downs
Saints: 3 plays, 5 yards, punt
Cowboys: 13 plays, 79 yards, 21 yard FG
Saints: 12 plays, 54 yards, 45 yard FG
Cowboys: 4 plays, 40 yards, 53 yard FG
Cowboys: 2 plays, 68 yards, TD
Saints: 10 plays, 70 yards, 28 yard FG
Cowboys: 4 plays, 14 yards, punt
Bush fumbles to give the ball back to Dallas
Cowboys: 6 plays, 15 yards, TD
Saints: 10 plays, 46 yards, turnover on downs
Cowboys: 8 plays, 30 yards, botched punt kicked on the run
Saints: 3 plays, 4 yards, interception off of Graham tip by Sensabaugh
Cowboys: 7 plays, 61 yards, TD
Saints: 3 plays, -9 yards, punt
Saints go back to attacking defense
Cowboys: 3 plays, 51 yards, ball taken away from Williams by Jenkins
Saints: 5 plays, 89 yards, TD
Cowboys: 9 plays, 35 yards, missed 59 yard FG attempt
Saints: 3 plays, -3 yards, clock runs down to 0:00

Bottom line as I saw that game. The Saints could do as they pleased early with the downfield attack on offense and pressure defense. After being up, they switched to a prevent type defense and a possession type offense (ala Parcells). After putting Dallas back into the game with the Bush fumble and tipped pass by rookie Graham, as Dallas turned those turnovers into 14 points, the Saints went back to the styles they started the game with, and stole away a victory!

Sweet Nancy, it's okay, that you want to harbor a grudge from what the Saints did to the Giants last year! I still love ya, baby!

Thanks Pete... I think. LOL anyway it's not that I'm bound and determined to prove you wrong. Just I saw some things you said that I disagreed with and I put in my 2 cents as to why. I still disagree with some of your stats and theories from your last post but truth be told we are beating a dead horse, you will never agree that Saints didn't control the line of srimmage most of the time and I will not agree that they did, so I propose, as hard as it to keep my mouth shut, that we agree to just disagree for now.

Sweet Nancy, it's okay, that you want to harbor a grudge from what the Saints did to the Giants last year! I still love ya, baby!

Pete dear I don't hold a grudge at all. Saints whipped Giants azz last season, plane and simple. In fact in that game you can clearly say Saints controlled the line of scrimmage, lol heck they even controlled the game. However that has nothing to do with the last game between the Saints and Dallas.

Nancy jumped way ahead past the basics, which is fine by me, but MGM, you may get lost in the discussion.

* yikes...cringe* Pete dear do me a favor, please don't include me in a sentence when adding a dig on someone else.... it really make me uncomfortable. Makes me feel like the Elephant in the room whose azz is too big to hide.

Gregg Williams is a very aggressive defensive coordinator. His game plan is always based on attack, attack, attack the QB and the offense. But after the score was 17-0, the Saints defense backed off on the attack and more often than not, rushed only 3 linemen and did not blitz at all. This is totally out of character for a Gregg Williams defense and I BELIEVE that Sean Payton told Williams to back off on the attack.

This means that the Saints had 8 players playing the pass defense when Dallas needed to pass to get back in the game. Good thing the Saints did not blitz or rush 4 Defensive linemen or go on attack or Kitna would have passed for 500 yards on the Saints defense.

Saints go back to attacking defense
Cowboys: 3 plays, 51 yards, ball taken away from Williams by Jenkins

^^^^That's what I'm talking about.

Remove those 3 plays .......Yes, SweetNancy, without the 60 yards end around by Austin, After putting Dallas back into the game with the Bush fumble

Remove 3 plays in every Cowboys game this year with a with or without this or that and the Cowboys are undefeated with home field advantage through out the playoffs.

And Pete it was the Roy Williams fumble that put the Saints back in the game not the Bush fumble.

BUT HE DIDNT....Saints DEFENSE cause the turnover...WHY?....CAUSE THE SAINTS ARE A TEAM THAT FINDS A WAY TO WIN....

If Roy williams was a GOOD player he DOESNT fumble the ball.....PERIOD....

you think ONE play cause the ENTIRE outcome of the game?....really?...so what if the cowboys missed an extra point?....what if Reggie Bush catches that screen pass?.....What if Drew Brees didnt overthrow recievers all day?.....What if I looked like Brad Pitt?.....what if what if what if....what if the broncos wouldnt have hired Mcdaniels?.....

my goodness...end result...the cowboys are 3-8 FOR A REASON....

current standings in the NFC EAST....

Eagles 8-4
Gmen 7-4
Skins 5-6
Boys 3-8

Standings according to mgm, and hd....(The "what if" standings)

Boys 11-0(three plays have changed the whole season and they should be unbeaten)
Gmen 6-5(taking away the win against the boys)
skins 4-7(Cowboys should have won the season opener)
Eagles ....hell I dont know...if Vick was still in jail?....what if?....

I mean the pack beating the boys 45-7 should have went the boys way...I mean a play here, a play there, and BINGO!!!!....cowboys win!!!

The Jags beating the boys 35-17...I mean it was ONLY 28-3 heading into the 4th quarter...right?...and that td the boys got in teh final couple minutes made all the difference....damm...BINGO!!!! boys should have won this one....

well...crap...now that I break it down, The boys are the best team in the league BY FAR....Atlanta?....PFFFT!!!!....Jets?...pats?...NAAAAAA!!!!!!

I suggest that cause the boys almost win by stats alone there should be a rule that if you "almost" win you get a "half" win the standings and at the end of the year the team with the most "half" wins gets a free spot in the playoffs....

Well...I have to go break down every play in the broncos season and make them 11-0 also...be right back....

Well...I have to go break down every play in the broncos season and make them 11-0 also.

Three plays would not have changed a thing in the 59-14 rout against the Raiders with Raiders scoring all 59 points still in the 3rd Qtr.

But will give the Broncos a 10-1 record.

why is my name bein dragged up? i like stats its a good war tool if you lose.or i like to compare my team with other teams.
for the cowboys the last couple of years it hasnt been so much stats its been moreso turnovers, penalities and players not performing. garrett has seemed to put a new attitude in the team.
i'll be watchin today as i always do. should be a good game

Did IIII dooooo thaaaaaaat????!!!!

Sorry, Sweet Nancy, in the future, I promise to exclude you from any digs that aren't immediately directed at you! It was just after MGM's latest, "yeah, what she said!" post, I just couldn't help myself! To borrow a line from the late, great Flip Wilson (in, of course, his Geraldine costume), "the devil made me do that!"

Now to set a few facts straight that I somehow overlooked.

What team dominates the trenches when Dallas has the ball on a 13 play drive that eats up 7 minites of the clock for a TD versus Drew Brees throwing the ball up for grabs on a 1 play 80 yard TD pass that takes 10 seconds off the clock? Nancy knows the answer.

It's the team that takes off it's clothes

Yes, Sweet Nancy, that was the correct answer!

1. If the defense is allowing the offense to complete first downs and allows a team 13 consecutive plays AND they score a TD on that drive.... I would say the defense is NOT controlling the line of scrimmage.

Sorry, Sweet Nancy, that was not the correct answer! But it's not your fault, as it was a trick question! The 13 play drive for 7 minutes for the Cowboys resulted in a FG, and not a TD! Just MGM getting his facts in error!
Sweet Nancy, that does make your whole Parcells reference kind of moot, but I do remember those Giants teams kicking a lot of field goals, too.

LMAO just Pete Dear gets carried away.

Yes, Sweet Nancy, but you can't say I'm not passionate about Dem Saints!

WHO DAT???????????

but truth be told we are beating a dead horse,

Awwwww, come on Sweet Nancy, you know that there's nothing like kicking around some good dead horse flesh!

This means that the Saints had 8 players playing the pass defense

MGM, and you figured this out all on your own! I am soooo proud of you!

Good thing the Saints did not blitz or rush 4 Defensive linemen or go on attack or Kitna would have passed for 500 yards on the Saints defense.

Actually, MGM, when the Saints defense was in attack mode, Kitna was 6-12 for 89 yards with 3 turnovers by Dallas (1 INT and 2 fumbles) and 1 missed FG! Which is why the Saints should have stayed in attack mode, but alas, they didn't.

Remove those 3 plays .......Yes, SweetNancy, without the 60 yards end around by Austin, After putting Dallas back into the game with the Bush fumble

MGM, you really need to stop with the cut and paste and quoting me out of context, as to twist my words!

That was only a guess. I'm sure at times the Saints rushed 3 Defensive linemen and only had 6 players defending the pass ( only using 9 players on the field ) since Payton and Garrett are such good friends as you say they are and didn't want to blow the Cowboys out. Know wonder back-up QB Kitna passed for over 300 yards.

Answer me this Pete: You said the Saints didn't want to blow Dallas out then WHY did they score the first 17 points in the first 10 minutes of the game?

We're in week 13 now and a lot of Football has been played . How many games this year do you think a team has been up on another team by 17 points or more at the end of the First Quarter? My guess under 5%

its simple!.......the saint's offense wanted to see just how long it would take for their defense to pizz away the lead!

-------------------------------------------

............christmas came early for the Cowboys in Indy........where Peyton was tossing lots of "gifts" into the hands of the Boyz................Ah, remember tis always better to 'give" than to 'receive".....................especially when your opponent don't have much of a running game!

Now, the folks in Dallas will have a heap to talk about all week!.........other than how they "ALMOST" beat the Stains!

newsflash:
with the cowboys winning today they have been officially mathematically and eliminated from the playoffs. not because they won but because the gaints did and the eagles thursday.
too little too late, they probably wish they had some of those bonehead plays back.
i dont like jason garrett the offensive coordinator, but i like jason garrett the head coach.
an announcement should be made next week after the eagles game
