It will be there telling you what board it is for sure , i havent seen a board that hasnt yet, look between the ram slots, the pci slots ,it will have a mfg er and a model , but have you looked in the device manager to see if you have your high def audio drivers properly installed, if they are it will look like this if you dont you will have yellow question/or exclamation marks http://s13.photobucket.com/albums/a299/cl733/?action=view¤t=Realtekaudio.jpg

Oh and that hardware updater, dont even go there as its most likely malware and just the beginning of more problems, i was looking on the realtek site and they do show a new driver for vista/win7 which is different than one used for xp as well, if you can find the genre of that board you can find the driver that was shipped with that board and start from there

this is on the board beside the ram sticks RS69oMo3

other than that.. there is NOTHING else i can see.. unless i have to look on the BACK of the motherboard... which imo is rediculous

The EASIEST way to determine your motherboard make/model is to get a program called CPU-Z. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

This neat handy little app will tell you everything you needed/wanted to know about your motherboard, cpu, and other hardware.

Realtek HD audio is a pain to get working most of the time. I had it on my old laptop and it was not only almost impossible to get working with XP SP3, but just about every other OS had fun with it. They make a quality chip...I've found nothing wrong with the quality of thier codec chips...but the driver support is entirely too buggy.

Be glad you don't have a USB/Firewire M-Audio device.

It likely is.

My Acer laptop had the ALC883 Realtek chip in it...but I never had a bit of a problem and generally, when I did...a good driver cleaning fixed it...but I ran Vista or Win7 on that thing, my experience with it on XP is slim.

So I am not sure which model you have , but go look thru here and see if you can find the latest sound driver for you computer http://www.acer.ca/acer/service.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&miu10einu24.current.attN2B2F2EEF=3751&sp=page15e&ctx2.c2att1=27&miu10ekcond13.attN2B2F2EEF=3751&CountryISOCtxParam=CA&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=719687231 and actually post the model of your computer as well

If no software changes to the drivers or reformatting works then it's pretty much a hardware failure at this point and you will have to buy either a sound card or a new motherboard, because it looks like it's boiling down to that if it's still not working after everything suggested on this forum isn't helping.

Ok, Vista changes things sighty.

You need to make sure you remove ALL the Realtek stuff..it's likely the drivers didn't get completely removed so there are some fragments still accessing the wrong resources.

Incorrectly hooking up an audio source SHOULD NOT blow anything up. Audio signals are less than a couple of volts RMS and the tolerances on the sound componets SHOULD be high enough this causes no damage.

Get the Realtek drivers from the proper place too. If you're not getting them DIRECTLY from Realtek, then you've likely got the wrong ones.

It's impossible to fix sound issues unless you know EXACTLY how sound works. It's impossible to really explain it to get any useful information.

I'm 99% certain you've got a driver issue, it's just you're not able to understand enough to explain it properly, which is fine...half the time I try to get people's sound fixed and I talk over their heads.

Well it's mostlikely a hardware failure at this point. I mean you pretty much done everything there is and nothing is helping. you are prob going to have to get another motherboard or throw in a sound card.

I have the same computer setup as you OP and my sound does disappear on me from time to time... trust me, something has been clicked off or changed.
I'm sure you've already gone through, as you've stated, everything in Audio Devices to see if everything is working or not and tried updating.

Instead of asking more help.. first, sit down with that lughead of a brother of yours and CALMLY (due to his anger mgmt) ask to step by step explain what he did... and relay that info here to all the guys above me offering advice...
then..... you can listen to them when they tell you go purchase any items for your computer.

good luck
