Rogue.. I personally wasn't trying to say I think you are stupid.
Sometimes even the brightest people in the world overlook something simple.

I do hope its not the motherboard

Oh Well if it is the motherboard you can get the AMD ATI Radeon 785G AM2\AM2+\AM3+ I showed you earlier which is a much better motherboard then that Nvidia 430 motherboard yours came with. It would be a good upgrade.

A sound card is a cheap alternative, compared to a mother board and all the new things you will be adding on that new board to make it work too, it just will plug into a pci slot and add a new driver , presto , probably better sound for mere peanuts

You wouldn't need to add anything new with a 780G/785G motherboard. All of his current hardware will run on it with no issue, because it's compatible with everything he has now on his motherboard.

A decent sound card isn't that much cheaper then an Newer AMD Micro ATX motherboard. Matter of fact you can get a new motherboard with a 780G chipset that comes with pci-e 2.0, 3200 HD IGP for around the same price as decent sound card. Not to mention the 780G chipset is future compatible meaning unlike his current AM2 board that doesn't support AM2+ quad cores, or the new AM3 processors he will be able to upgrade to those types of processors in the future with the 780G chipset.

Stereo Mix
Realtek High Definition Audio ---Green
Working

DISABLE Stereo Mix for starters.

I've seen it where some machines will disable the microphone and sometimes the speakers when this is enabled.

Another thing:

Check your default format in the Realtek HD Audio Manager

On my system, If I have anything but 24bits, 48000 Hz (Studio Quality) EVERYTHING goes mute, and unless I change it back, close out of what I am doing, it refuses to work.

Also:

By default, the Realtek HD Audio Manager does NOT enable Jack detection by default. This generally should not be a problem, but worth looking into if the two suggestions above do not produce results.

To access this, go into the Realtek HD Audio Manager, click on the little folder icon and check the Enable Jack detection when device is plugged in box.

Goodluck!
