Would you do any job rather than be unemployed?

Yes I would and theres no reason why anyone shouldnt.
If your paid shit, then government top it up, with working tax credits, so there is no excuse apart from being bone idle

There is an excuse, you can get more from the benefit system if you have a certain number of kids. Was just watching Benefit Busters on C4, someone with 4 children could have gone into a job and decided not to as financially she'd have been worse off. The woman training her understood why. I do too.

And I'm not bone idle, despite being on benefits and unemployed at the moment I don't just sit around. Plus I've paid a huge amount of tax, when in work I don't get working tax credits or any top ups as I usually earn a certain amount and I have no children and don't plan to.... so in reality I'm saving the government money, the amount I'll get in benefits or top-ups is minimal, unless I become seriously ill or something happens, and that's the problem with judging others, you never know when/what will happen to you.

And then some people lose out on rent/council tax rebates and end up not very much better off. I have a friend who is a cleaner, works 20 hours a week, gets paid the minimum wage. Yes she gets working tax credits but she also has to pay out rent and council tax. When her son turns 16 she will lose out in child tax credits if he chooses not to stay on at school. Some people are barely better off working than not.

All working tax credits are are an excuse for some employers to get away with paying people crap wages. Which in this day and age is shocking. There must be one hell of a lot of bone idle people out there chasing all these job vacancies

What a judgement to make on people, calling people bone idle when there are people out there desperately seeking work and can't find any.

I'm just waiting for someone to come along and say that the unemployed shouldn't smoke/drink or be paid in food vouchers instead of money. Oh yes and to buy a bike and get on it.

My ex employer were so skint this year that people didn't get a cost of living rise. They run an after school care club and breakfast club for kids, so many parents were being paid off that they ended up taking their kids out of childcare. Plus, everyone was told that it was highly likely that the organisation would be looking for people to take voluntary redundancies.

I'm not actually getting a free ride, I'm entitled to contribution based ESA because I've paid enough national insurance in the last 2 tax years to qualify.

I would and have done anything.

I ended up unemployed for 8 months after leaving navy so did voluntary work until i could get paid work which was as a shopping centre security guard Bit of a come down from earning £55k as an officer in the navy to £14k looser security guard, but in the current climate you cant be picky yet the employers can be as picky as they want.

I'm not sure I could work in an abbatoir or a funeral parlour! I do voluntary work one day a week though and if I lost my paid job, which is possible as my hours have been reduced, I do have another string to my bow which I could earn money from but which would be mentally draining if I did it every day. I think I'd sooner let my flat out and go and live cheaply abroad for a few months if I was made redundant.

This won't be a popular answer, but I'd rather be unemployed than take a menial job for which I'm overqualified. But then again, I'm in a fortunate position and would probably have a different perspective if I had no qualifications and limited resources. I'd rather do volunteer work than earn minimum wage. It gives people job experience, looks good on a CV, provides networking and social opportunities and demonstrates initiative. And it makes you feel useful while you're not doing anything else.

I would be very reluctant to do a job that does not pay very close to my union rate especially if it is an unskilled job because i would not last the week out, i have been to colledge twice in my working career three years in the seventies and two years in the nineties to better myself, so to be told by somebody at the job center that i may have to take a job on minimum wage i found insulting, so i replied that i would rob her house first, i was asked to leave and come back next time with a better attitude

I'd rather work than be unemployed. I'd find it more soul destroying to sit around doing nothing all day than to work in a menial position until something better came along.

My nephew is 21, he has and does work but is currently unemployed. He wants to go back to college but the only way he can get funding to do it is if his parents chuck him out. Explain the logic of that to me? At the moment he gets paid not to do anything but if he were to start studying his money would be stopped. Crazy system.

and thats what wrong with the system, the incentive isn't there to do minimum wage jobs - it needs to be changed so that even the shittest job is significantly better than doing nothing.

Some new unemployment figures.

As for studying, I asked the job centre if I could study part time and still sign on, as long as your hours are a certain level and depending on the level of the course you can.
You can also study with the OU and still claim JSA as long as the course isn't degree level.

It's been mentioned about getting a menial job. I'm looking for jobs well below my qualification level, but do people really think there won't be competition for these jobs, no matter what they are?

My step daughter went for a job,to fit in with her college course, and there was 23 others there for the same job and apparently they were interviewing the previous day too and into the next.

It was a kitchen assistants job, basically washing dishes and emptying bins,no wonder people are demoralised.

I wouldnt do certain jobs,no point busting my knackers for peanuts

On the note about competition, I was talking to my mum earlier, 2 classroom assistant posts in her school, 2 days a week.

2000 applicants.

It seems that our economy has gone downhill........i read in the paper yesterday that there are 5000 jobs being created, all of the retail type. Correct me if i'm wrong but it seems like people are so desperate for a job they are taking a step backwards! As for the original post i personally would do anything instead of being unemployed as it is soul destroying!

The problem is when you apply for jobs you are knocked back for being 'over-qualified' meaning you can't even get a job doing data entry. And for cleaning up here, you need 6 months previous experience. 7 years of studying/working for **** all. Bring on the dole.

I went to my back to work session this week, I'm currently a stage 1 jobseeker, that is I've been signing on for less than 13 weeks. The girl at the benefits agency told me that unemployment in my area has increased by 88 per cent since the start of this recession, currently there are roughly 4 and a half thousand people claiming JSA in this area.

Fortunately as long as you let the DWP know, you can do voluntary work which is the route I am going to have to go down in the short term.

Employers can hand pick the people they want at the moment because there are on average 2 or 3 hundred people chasing every job vacancy.

How about this (as an incentive to work)

Upon Filling for job seekers allowance, you need to prove your outgoings (this would determine the minimum cost of job that you could go for). For the first week of your claim you get to look for work. After that you get entered into the counsil workers group. 3 days a week you work for the council, litter picking, painting etc (the counsil will provide lunch meal, water and any equipment used - overalls etc). 2 days a week you job hunt, in the job center.

If you turn down a job (without a valid reason) - that matches your minimum proven outgoings, then your benefits get stopped.

This seems fair to me?

Why oh why do people go on about what people should or shouldn't have to do to receive a pittence of £65 a week?

It's time people realised that those on £65 a week a not living the high life. That is done by the multi-millionaire "idle rich" who also don't work but live in the lap of luxury.

And no, most of them don't deverve to be there. Many are simply there because their ancestors robbed ours!

Yes.............................um except cleaning as I think it is the most pointless activity in the world and I hate it not for any other reason.

It is more important to have structure and purpose in your day than to be out of work holding on for only one type of job or career.

An incentive to work? I was given a form the other day by the benefits agency if and when I get a job to calculate whether or not it would be worth my while taking it, in the slim event of me actually being offered something. Because even the DWP realise that for some people, taking a minimum wage job might end up with them being financially worse off.

Someone with a child can work 16 hours a week and claim working tax credits, because I'm single I would need to work 30 hours a week in a minimum wage job before I could make the same claim for tax credits.

If I applied for a 2 day a week job that was miniumum wage, if I got it, taking travel to work into consideration and the fact that I'd need to pay more rent and council tax, I'd be no better off than I am at the moment. In fact, I'd probably be worse off.

Why on earth should I also have to prove my outgoings? As it is when you make a claim for JSA income based, you have to prove what you have in your bank in the form of bank statements. My outgoings are currently more than the 64 quid a week I get in JSA, believe me.

What exactly would picking litter do to improve my skills unless I wanted to be a litter picker full time?

Or do you think that people should work for their benefits.

If you turn down a job at the moment without good reason, you will be sanctioned, but as I said the DWP do know that some people will be worse off in work taking into account the wage that they will be earning, hence the form they give out.

I don't need an incentive to work, I want to work. As for spending 2 days a week hunting for jobs in the job centre, the last time I signed the girl said, there is hardly anything on the job points. They also said that customers were not impressed with the jobcentreplus call centre and it was taking so long to send out applications, by the time people got them, the closing date had passed.

They have their own in house matching job service, which I phone, every day. My local job centre is a 6 mile round trip, asking people to go there an extra 2 days and sign on in the middle of all this as well will just leave some people worse off.
Unless the job centre is going to pay travel expenses?

That's the whole point "pimp mustapha"....money is like a set of scales, if they have it, it's because you don't!

And in the majority of cases it HAS been paid from "our coffers" or those of our ancestors...think about it!

Ive been applying for jobs right, left and centre for the last 2 months!I look on the internet, the local paper, shop windows and ive gone into shops and asked and still nothing!I,m not on benefit at the moment as still on sick from my last job after an accident and can no longer do the work.To top it off, my niece has now given me 4 weeks notice to quit the house ive been sharing with her,so not only have i no job but not going to have a home either unless i find somewhere within the next 4 weeks!I,m trying very hard to stay positive and try to see it all as a challenge but it,s not easy i can tell you!Ive supported myself for the last 8 years since my marriage broke up and was proud of what i,d achieved. Now i feel like a big loser who might have to rely on benefit until i can improve things.
