Would you do any job rather than be unemployed?
Posted: 10/29/2009 3:13:28 PM

My question is would you do any job even if you were overqualified to do it rather than be unemployed or would you rather wait for the right job to come along?

Personally, I have done. In the past quarter century, I have had one main job, and on top of this, about thirteen or fourteen additional ones. SOme have required that I do things such as totally strip toilets, and urinals with my bare hands, and getting totally soaked from head to toe. I have stood on the spot for hours at a time, had attempts at having flesh bitten from my body, been cold, burned, sleep deprived, etc., but have done this to get extra cash where needed... I have an honours degree in biology, and worked as a microbiologist for some time, but feel able to tackle ANY jobs I feel necessary to earn cash...

OP , I would do any job if it paid the right money for it to be worth me going to work, but the problem is there is too much incentive for me and others not too. I have worked most of my life had a business up til 2 years ago.

I am quite fit and healthy to go to work, but have been told I am over qualfied, for a lower status job or for the job I am actaully trained to do I dont have beough experience.

catch 22 , we have young people one I know has just qualifed from oxford uni did exceptionally well and cant get a job even in sainsburys because they know he will leave eventually lol

I am now back at college for only a year and hope that it kicks something in one way or another if not I give up to be honest :)

Are some jobs worth having ?

Why would you do a job like this? Lets look at the evidence.

Person 1. There you are working away quite happily and doing your job well. The company spots an opportunity to make more profit out of your job position by re-classifying. They find a way to relieve you of your position- You lose your job or get moved sideways or downwards. No more pay rises for you. A pay cut even.

Whatever job you were doing it just isn’t there in the same form. You are earning less or have no job.

Person 2. The person that moves into your job at a lower wage finds that the workload is unrealistic, and they will leave or complain. The result being that they do leave, or the workload gets reduced pretty much back to what it was in the first place.

Whats actually been achieved by this?

The manager has removed a threat to their own position from you.
The manager has generated more work for the staff trainer.
The continuity of that positions performance has taken a slide downwards.

How much did it all cost?

A lot more than if he/she had left things as they were.

What happens next?

The cycle of reclassifying repeats itself all across the company.

The long-term outlook for the business?

Person 1 and 2 may have already moved on or will soon move to a better employer (if they can find one).
Resentment has been built up by the staff that remain.
The dedication that the staff once held has disintegrated to nothing.
The business that was once is no more.
The business is on its way down and may go bust or be sold.
The business is sold to new owners because the management see the writing on the wall. The business now has new owners and they think they can trim down even further.

And all because the people at the top wanted more profit in the first place- BUT they won’t worry as they have lined their own pockets in advance of all of this.

The new owners will have to work with double or treble effort to keep it all going.
They may achieve a good result. Or may not as the case may be.

What HAS really happened is that down at lower end of the scale it’s the workers that paid the real price of bad management skills and the positions they hold.

Example (as close as i can think of) for one being the old British Leyland that was sold on a few times through private ownership… (that’s for those of you that say prove the above)

Edit. No British Leyland didn't work out very well when it was owned by the government but it did produce jobs and wages.

Edit. You could apply the same approach to British Airways.. I wonder where that business is going to end up.. As if i didn't know etc
