This time around, however, I *did* notice that it gives the post number, so barring the 100 page long threads that gives you a pretty good idea which page they're on
And unless they're the OP or last reply on the thread you may have to dig a bit, yup.
I tried just swapping out user #s in a generic history URL, ...so far this doesn't work.
(I think forum log in ID #s and profile ID #s are different)
Sometimes it's not so much what they said, in that post, as seeing their interaction with the other posters. . . .
Absolutely, ...this is why I'm glad we can still search this.
The only reason I ever put people on my favorites list was to track their forum posts (These forums DO have many great contributors), since their posts aren't on their profiles, I fixed this by putting the URLs to their "last 25" in the handy-dandy notepad that's part of the favorite feature. I actually find this works even better now. | |

Will it completely solve the problem, absolutely not, there is no way to completely stop it. I agree. But if it gets rid of even a few of these frequent abusers, which I notice at least a couple deleted there account already, I say it's good. | |

I'd rather it not have been deleted. I used to always check how popular people were and wouldn't message anyone who had been favorited too many times because I figured they were swamped with messages already. | |

Nope, there is speculation though; some based in logic, some based in "WTF"?
It's probably best to read them for yourself to contrast and compare.
I had 44 and I liked to see who added me...it was an opening to chattin.....
1) You can still receive email alerts when someone adds you.
2) you can still view the list
3) If the number total has importance to you you can keep count. | |

As far as the number of favorites, sometimes that also clued me in to why I was added when there was no email to say hello, or why I was added. When another woman looked at my profile and added me as a favorite, then I looked at her profile, and saw she was on something like 213 other favorites lists, it was a clue she is pretty much a serial fav adder, sort of like on MySpace - no reason other than to up her numbers, so I ignored that one. On the other hand, a man with few on his favs list added me, and I contacted him. We had a reasonably nice give and take on email. I find it a rather interesting social interaction. A lot more interesting than the "chemistry". There's a real waste, to me. | |

Posted: 8/23/2009 5:53:44 PM | OK, so I'll accept the fact that the last 5 postings won't show anymore, but I think it's a mistake. It really changes how I view the site even though I could dig for the postings of people I know.
The only people I ever contacted on here was based on their posting. It was an excellent weeding device and gave an important dimension on a poster's personality. A profile can be written (or not) by anyone.
I appreciate that the site is free, and I've made a few fantastic friends here....it's unlikely I'd ever have met them under the current conditions. | |

Posted: 8/23/2009 6:11:04 PM | Well, ahem, according to Late, he got an "overwhelmingly negative" amount of comments about the forums post on our profiles vs the favs count (when doing his mod duties).
I submitted that was crazy, that I never got one negative comment about my forums posts showing up on my profile, but a boatload of snide comments about my favs count. Moreover, whenever I went into POF complaint threads, one of the biggest was favs count, not forums posts. As the comments in this thread alone has borne out, people are much more negative about the favs count than the forums posts feature. In fact, most want the forums post back and to h*ll with the favs?
But I guess I don't know what the heck I'm talking about.  | |

Posted: 8/23/2009 6:24:52 PM | As has been put forth in this thread and I recommended months ago in other threads, Markus could give us the choice to turn on/off the feature. We already have a gazillion choices on our Edit page, so what's one more?
But Late is right -- if Markus has decided the feature is no longer useful, it's gone. I'll abide by it. The favs count caused much more trouble and dissension than it was worth and I have no problem with its demise. I won't miss it one bit.

But honestly there are more posts in THIS THREAD that would like them back then all the whiny complaints, from folks embarrassed that they had made and azz out of themselves on here and wee thus mortified that the post now showed on their profile in all the time I have been here. You just don't get compliments on a feature from all the people that love it. You get occasional complaints but the Admins original reason stated for having them on our profiles still holds. And its also the reason most complained about it. (smile)
The ONLY posts that really should not show are those made in profile review. And a lot of the people I saw over the years complain had THOSE showing.
But this is a great example of a feature that instead of being killed should of just had a user option added to our profile. So everyone was happy. It appears NOW that most the forum users actually prefer the feature. A handful complained. They won.
I am a programmer. Adding a option to our profiles to allow if we wanted them to show would of been really easy since the programming to show them was already in place.

Posted: 8/23/2009 7:20:48 PM | Candid, if you didn't have a lot of favs you don't really understand the big brouhaha. If you get up to a 100 or more look out. I had 335 on mine (people adding my profile to their list, or the count everybody use to see on their profiles) and I can't tell you how many sarcastic little zingers and lefthanded putdowns I got about it. I finally decided to delete everything down to zero, but within a month it was back up to 55. There was no programming in place to stop people from just re-adding you again ad infinitum. I vowed I will not become a slave to monitoring the dang list and only keep those I'm interested in. The best fix was to eliminate it altogether.
Now, the forums posts are a totally different matter. I never received one complaint from somebody about it. No "I can't believe I see your posts on your profile, get rid of them!!". I find out now that most of the complaints probably came from the people that wrote something stupid in the forums and didn't want people seeing it when they clicked on their profile (although, people would "still" have to actually "go" to the post in question to read the whole comment, since you only saw a snippet on the profile). If so, that is a "totally" different context from what I was talking about with Late in here and why we had a go-round.
The favs count was simple to see and had immediate impact, which is why so many people got bent out of shape and it caused so many recriminations.

I really don't see why this has to be such an issue. It's a very simple solution and would be much appreciated by those (such as myself) who liked having their forum posts shown.
Choices are good. And having them is even better. ;-) | |

I was under the impression that the discontinuation of the IM service by the third party affected all POF users, including those that paid for the Serious Member upgrade. | |

It has been one of the top "done to death" posts in this forum over the years. It was at least three or for threads a week at times.

My experience differs.
You just don't get compliments on a feature from all the people that love it.
You do when it's implemented, just read the original thread from April 2005, I think second post in it is mine (before I was a mod), I liked it, over time the glitching problems got on my nerves though.
You get occasional complaints but the Admins original reason stated for having them on our profiles still holds.
There are three original reasons, one of which I can see a lot of signs that indicate it's no longer desired, and there's also this little tidbit from Admin from the first thread on the subject, "this is a dating site first and forum second."
This kinda' puts his priorities into perspective.
Consider one of the stated reasons/effects for the feature: "Number of users posting on the forums since the addition has doubled." ~ Admin
Now consider the many "post limiting" restrictions that have appeared in the last year or two, as well as the incredible shrinking mod team.
And its also the reason most complained about it.
That's just one of the three reasons the feature was originally implemented, and while it may have worked to keep those here for dating honest, those here just to troll the forums probably didn't /don't care what people read on their profile, ...some probably reveled in their own obnoxiousness having a billboard on their profile, ...trolls are funny that way.
Really, I can think of many reasons to keep this feature, especially if it was better implemented like Trapped (before he was a mod) said on the original thread, "I think it would be better to just have a link to the last 25 posts ...", or at least in a way that didn't glitch.

You could suggest to those on your list to display the URL to their "last 25" page on their profile. This is still an option.

This option was never entertained when it was a feature, I doubt it will be now.

Yes, I do understand this is an option, but people (in general) are lazy. No one wants to (or will want to) copy and paste to get to a link.
I see it all the time on other forums. Someone will paste a URL which is not click-able, then another user will "lazy link" it (make it click-able).
Ehh. Me thinks we'll need more than just cookies for the big fishy. ;-) | |

I think I opened it about two times, and when I did got immediately bombarded with requests to chat. If I didn't respond right away I got the usual, "Huh, too good to talk to me, eh!!" response, sometimes even blocked. I bet most people had similar experiences, and never turned on the feature more than a few times before finally leaving it off. | |
