| last 5 forum posts.. gone. Posted: 8/25/2009 11:46:32 AM | make a decision of not wanting to know you, based on what you have said on a thread, how you said it, etc...regardless of factors that may have influenced your post, which may well serve to obscure the real you. This relates to two of the original purposes of the feature. See post #9
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingposts7439394.aspx
Admin: Forces People to Behave It forces poeple to behave, and those people that don't are going to look like morons. Also people with forum posts are going to get more replies to emails, then those without.
Admin: People held Accountable People have to be held accoutable for what the post. This is a dating site first and forum second.
It makes no sense that this was no longer desired by Admin, ...on the other hand if you look at the third reason, and consider the many filters since applied to reduce posting:
Admin: Users Posting Doubled Number of users posting on the forums since the addition has doubled.
Before anybody falls into the baseless speculation trap, ...a little bit of reasoning goes a long way.
As for 'favourites' count, well, when was the last time you had coffee with one of your 300 favoutites, or had at least a stimulating online chat? Every day, but I was gone for over a year and my own count dropped down to about +/- 200 My own list has about 35 people on it, I talk to them often
Weren't these forums riddled with complains that took the form of: "Why do men add me on favourites yet they won't send me a message"; "why why why" etc...
Myopia renders the display of a number meaningless.
See #6 http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts8104038.aspx
So what possible reasons are there for adding someone to your list: Sometimes used as a "hint"
Allows you to know when somebody is online now if they have their IM function on.
Allows you to know when somebody was on line last.
Allows you to keep track of a person's forum posts by way of their profile.
Allows quick access to IM them.
Has a note pad function connected to the profile.
Allows them to add a testimonial to your profile.
What is your expected behaviour if someone adds you? Do nothing.
Don't assume they will email you, they may be waiting for you to email them.
You may email them if you like, or you don't have to.
Add then to your favourites and see who blinks first.
Remove them from your list.
If they continually add you and you continually remove them, feel free to report them via the acceptable Reporting Methods
What can you assume from someone who is on a ton of other people's favourites list? Nothing.
A lot of people find them attractive.
They might not care to delete themselves from the lists as they're busy pursuing the ones they like via email and couldn't care less about favourites.
They may actually be attention seekers and in competition with their online friends.
Bottom line .... There are no set rules to its use.
Use it as you wish.
React as you wish.
Don't judge anyone until you've made contact.
That last line kinda' sums it up.
The favorites feature is unchanged for any of the practical purposes, and those who actually want other's to see how they "are" on the forums can leave an URL to their history on their profile.

| Favourites & Last 5 Forum Posts being removed from profiles Posted: 8/25/2009 2:21:03 PM | You can't fight city hall, but it would have been nice if we members would have been informed about the change AND been given the option to keep our posts active! I personally liked having my last five forum posts on my profile! So many changes this past year... ...as we get older, we adapt less to changes!
** It would be nice to receive an explanation as to why it was decided to remove the forum posts from the profiles...was anything gained?

I don't want to try and hunt down through practically All the threads to find my favorite writers postings!!! and usually their mail restrictions won't let me ask them directly "what have you written lately?"
I mean Come On!!!
We are supposed to be learning about others on here, yet you remove the seeming only ability to get in to their head by reading!!!
Get rid of the stupid roses, you want to know whats pointless on here!

given the option to keep our posts active!
There are still options, many listed in this thread, paste the URL for your forum history into your profile for one.
It would be nice to receive an explanation as to why it was decided to remove the forum posts from the profiles...was anything gained?
A more streamlined look for one, this feature was always very "glitch-prone" as well. Explanations from Admin happen once in a while, but since he left the note at the top of the forum window, this has become a rare occurrence. The only thing way to gauge "why" aside from baseless speculation is to understand the reasons it was implemented in the first place = one or more of the three reasons is no longer a desired "effect".
I don't want to try and hunt down through practically All the threads to find my favorite writers postings! There are several much easier options listed on this thread.
Get rid of the stupid roses, you want to know whats pointless on here! On the contrary, simple logic and math yields a very defined and useful purpose.

| Favourites & Last 5 Forum Posts being removed from profiles Posted: 8/25/2009 4:19:01 PM | I don't know why we should have to go through all those steps in order to get to our posts when it was perfect the way it was!
look in your 'My Forums' link off the forum Well, I would if it actually worked!! It no longer goes to my forums for me anymore - and my video is now blank and not working... Drama of it all? Sure is because POF is making so many changes and is becoming less user friendly.
Sigh....it was perfect the way it was a year ago. Now? Not so much. Please stop changing everything

"to make more money" takes the cake for WTF? I'm no math whiz, but it seems to me that one exit link to the forums instead of six probably translates into more clickety-clicks on the revenue generating pages, and fewer clickety-clicks on the pages that generate no revenue.
And I'm thinking that more clickety-clicks on the pages that do generate revenue would, um, make more money.
Not that there is anything wrong with that...

Did you try...?
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/usermessages.aspx?user_Id=7016750 You can put this URL on your profile, and encourage others to.
You can use the favorites (still!) to keep track of your favorite posters by putting their history link in the handy notepad in favorites.
If the only complaint is one based in lazy, ...well?
For those of us who have already adopted these available options, it's even a better way to keep track, it only costs an extra click or two.
Sigh....it was perfect the way it was a year ago Not really, it mangled HTML in such a way that it was often useless, and sometimes even glitched the profile itself.
I'm no math whiz, but it seems to me that one exit link to the forums instead of six probably translates into more clickety-clicks on the revenue generating pages, and fewer clickety-clicks on the pages that generate no revenue. The number is probably so infinitesimally insignificant, it only has a use for slagging the owner via fallacy.
What I want to know is why when I log onto Forums that the sex and sexuality title no longer appears? love an answer to this
You'd probably be better served by checking one of the threads with this as a topic.
Log in, refresh your browser and look at the forum third down from the top.

The number is probably so infinitesimally insignificant, it only has a use for slagging the owner via fallacy. I'm not exactly sure how the suggestion that an owner of a business might want to maximise his potential for revenue is interpreted to be slagging him, but your opinion is noted.
If adding the five links doubled the number of users posting in the forums in less than a month, I wonder if - four years later - they were as insignificant as you suggest.
Revenue is revenue and every penny counts...perhaps especially now that he has salaries to pay.

| Forum Posts Posted: 8/25/2009 6:06:35 PM | Well, I guess I am lazy (?) I work 8-9 hours a day in a faced paced, demanding job...I don't want to have to have to "work" just to find forums, or favorites, or..... .... POF is my place to unwind, catch up on my forums and read what others may have said, etc.... I still like POF but I do not like the changes that have been made. I have a right to my opinion, as do you or anyone else.
And I too would like to know why the sex/sexuality topic is NOT on the forum page....if any forum is a good way to know how a person thinks and an excellent way to guage whether you are interested or not, that was it. Can I find it if I type in 80 characters?

Okay, people that clicked on links and found the forums; decreased the page throughs, and clicks on the dating site by, ...how much are you considering? Out of the less than 5% (I think this is more than conservative) of the +/- 10,000,000 user base that would stop looking at profiles to use the forums? If he really wanted more bucks, wouldn't the simpler thing be to put ads on the forums?

if that doesn't work you may want to check for malware

Or are these features that are being removed only to be replaced to the advantage of paying members? Maybe some other smart computer person will come up with another free dating site. After all, Marcus got rich on this one! If I had the smarts, I'd do it. Although, maybe it's copyrighted or patented or something. Hmm...

Only if three of twelve penguin adjudicators say so and declare purple, the official anti-colour of tang-ness for all carbonated drinks mined on comets. Then we get time travel. Until then, no carrots or rutabagas or something, hmm...

i held my tongue through 8 pages of the original thread, and a similar number here. now, i'm going to state my piece (or is it pieces???).
1. i have been on pof long enough to see many features come and go. and the one thing i am certain of is this: admin either starts or reads threads about his new innovations. he reacts to worthwhile feedback within 2-3 days, if he feels it necessary. the fact that these changes are already nearly a week old, means he has already made his decision, and no one who posts is going to change it. so, everyone should just accept that IT IS THE WAY IT IS, and adapt. 2. if you want to disregard 1, go ahead, and see how far it gets you.... 3. y'all are welcome to hypothesize about this or that, but late's assessments about the original reasons for showing posts on profiles and why that may no longer be so, are the most reasoned you're going to get. including this one:
If he really wanted more bucks, wouldn't the simpler thing be to put ads on the forums? let's all say "d'uh" in unison...then we can all sing a round, to the tune of "row, row, row your boat...", such as "post, post, post your complaints". all of which is going to amount to bupkis. lastly, i'm gonna say that i haven't seen an ad on here in near 3 years, since i started using firefox + adblock plus, thanks to the advice of the mods, so, i wouldn't see any ads on the fora, either.
late - i may just nominate you for sainthood, given the patience you've shown. would you accept??? just wonderin', and, of course, i have no vatican connections...

| Forum Posts Posted: 8/26/2009 1:52:08 AM | the_humormonger very well presented and thank you very much.
The site is still free and has enough features that if you honestly work at it anybody can find and do as they need too.
Why is it everybody complaining has this "Entitlement Issue" with this site? It is free after all.

| Forum Posts Posted: 8/26/2009 7:40:54 AM | For those who believe that the changes the owner of the site makes have nothing to do with money... I offer some quotes from his blog (http://plentyoffish.wordpress.com/):
January 27, 2009
I’m letting hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues slip through my fingers every year by sending people to competitors sites. Given what everyone else in the market is doing now the only real choice we have is to acquire a mass market paid dating site or build one myself.
I’m going to have a lot of work to do to figure out how to run a paid site properly.
...snip...
Site design for POF is fine as a free site, but if i use that design on a paid site users would consider it a joke and not pay for anything.
...snip...
I think there is a lot of opportunity right now and a opening to create a major paid site right now.
November 21, 2008 Adsense paid out $3.00 CPM’s 5 years ago, now its 30 cents. A lot of that has to do with the fact I killed off my canadian competitors so i’ve got tons of inventory but no one to sell it to.
Nov 13, 2008
We are going to start introducing some products and features to try and get some of the 10 to 20 million dollars a month my users are spending elsewhere. There is really no money in being free and we have to start experimenting with other models now or we won’t be able to compete in 3 or 4 years. Some of his other blog entries speak of changes in the forms of online advertising and the methods of its targeting of and delivery to the user, so while placing static ads on the forums may seem simpler...that model already appears to be outdated.
As for the value of commenting here in this forum, this also from the site owner's blog:
Listening to users is bad… November 19, 2008
When it comes to building social sites listening to users is a bad idea. The ones that want something the most are usually fringe users who want something very specific. For instance on my site there are 900,000 dailly users of which 2,000 use the forums. Of those 2000 users who use the forums less than 50% are actually single and even fewer are actively looking for someone.
Over 90% of suggestions for changes to the site come from this group of users, but these users represent less than 1/450 users on the site. Basically if there are good ideas out there that users are suggesting its ones that are standard features on other dating sites.

My comment in here was removed. I didn't flame or go on about something else. Just a general don't agree with these 2 changes.
If I shouldn't post here, let me know. Maybe it is just a computer glitch or something.
Not a major concern for me. Just curious.

while placing static ads on the forums may seem simpler...that model already appears to be outdated. You have failed to make any reasoned connection whatsoever to the removed profile items and money, the reasoning of the above argument is still valid as it's the model that got Markus to where this site is today.
When it comes to building social sites listening to users is a bad idea. I can see why he thinks this sometimes. This is one of those times.
let's all say "d'uh" in unison...then we can all sing a round, to the tune of "row, row, row your boat...", such as "post, post, post your complaints". ...."troll, troll, troll some quotes, gently make it seeeem..." Yeah, ...par.

http://forums.plentyoffish.com/12990074datingPostpage8.aspx
That is the URL for the page you're reading right now. It's basically the "address" of the page on the internet.
This is the URL for your history,
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/usermessages.aspx?user_Id=9436483
- if you copy and paste this text into the narrow strip (or, address field) and click on your enter key, you will be taken to your last 25 forum posts page.

Okay, I bookmarked the address...
But how do I look up another poster's history?
Thank you for your time and patience btw.
