Pub ban's Mobile Phones

i think they should be banned
There is nothing worse than sitting opposite a guy and he is answering a few calls from his mates meeting them after meeting me
it shows not enough effort on his behalf as well as other things
i'll walk out on the next person that does that to me and leave him sitting there

If the tables were turned and i had met up with him and my mate had phoned me a few times arranging to meet me nearby after are meet up with him i wonder if he would like it..
me thinks not..

I vaguely remember reading an article that suggests females go out of their way to arrange that on a first meeting, for safety reasons.

really so you would like to meet up with a woman and then for her to chat on the phone while your sat there like an idiot for 10-15 minutes

a quick phone call for safety reasons is ok and you can do that in the toilet so as not to look ignorant and to show respect..and not in front of someone..

a date/meet up should be the 2 of you and mates should be kept out of it and if a guy wants to meet his mates then do it on a different day or plan it after you have left the person or before you meet the person

It would depend on the nature of the call whether I'd be bothered by it. I might find it disrepectful if it was idle chit chat, but not if there was a valid reason for the conversation. I'm more than capable of keeping my mind occupied for quarter of an hour without speaking.

In the article I mentioned, the point of having a friend call you about them meeting you afterwards was to let the other person know you were being met, so going somewhere else to take it would defeat its purpose.

It's possible the guy you mentioned arranged the call so you wouldn't think he was "Billy No Mates". People can do odd things to try and impress others.

Not supposed to use them in work also, but you can get away with it on nights more..I have it on silent and vibrate, incase my son is ill etc..

Only when i am with someone i don't want to be around, as in a bad date or bad company.Do i resort to replying to texts once in a while..then scoot out of there.

I'm not sure that they should be banned, but restricted to vibrate only and answered outside wherever possible, I would'nt like to think that someone was trying to get hold of me urgently, ie babysitter, or a family member had been in an accident or taken ill and no-one could contact me because some poor oversensitive drinker could'nt stand the fact that someone walked to the pub door with a mobile phone in their hand, its just overkill to ban them totally.

Yeah! And I reckon they should ban boozing in mobile phone shops too!

Actually, I think it's great; some people seem unable to exist without a mobile phone within an arm's reach of them, and I too have experienced dates where the woman has spent most of the time on their phone than conversing with me.

I often wonder if the phone's there for their convenience, or if they're there for their phone's convenience.

Thats more down to lack of manners than the fact that they have a mobile phone in their pocket, it would be just the same if they had no phone phone yet spent the evening talking to friends or aquaintances in the pub, or chatting up the barman all night.

Pubs are already dying on their arses after the smoking ban, why not go the whole hog and ban drinking in them?

I think it's a good idea. In fact I think they should be discouraged in all public places. I don't think anyone has a problem with someone making or taking a quick call, but it's those lengthy calls held at high volume that are so very irritating.

That's got nothing to do with mobile phone use and everything to do with disrespect and lack of manners. Women are worse at it than men in my opinion - a guy will have a 2-3 minute functional conversation about getting to a match or meeting up in town or finding a part for a car. If a woman's phone goes - it can be a half hour gossip and it can include you, sitting there like a lemon opposite her.

A few years ago I walked out of a first date after 25 minutes of this (interjected with "I won't be long - just another minute" every 5 minutes or so) - got in my car and left. About 30 minutes later I got an angry phone call "How dare you - yada yada - never want to see you again - had to spend £10 on a taxi home etc etc" - suited me fine. And it WAS gossip - including talking about me.

But - your kids phone - family phone - people have problems you can resolve - mobile phones are useful and great - even for the ill-mannered.

I'm amazed some people have been on dates where the other person has been on the phone! unless it was an emergency i'd give her a gobfull and walk straight out...that is unbelievably rude.

Op, yes i think it's a great idea to make people step outside of the pub to take a call.

Exactly, and don't be late, without a bloody good excuse.

na Shabba I would tease her mercilessly, funny how its turned into a "on a date" thread
if they bane phones in pubs how would you;
Call your mate to say " 2 - 0 , 2- 0 "
Order a pizza
Phone Dave behind the bar and tell him to get 6 pints in and a coke for Shabba
Score
phone to say "where the fuck are ya I'm in the pub on me own like a divvy"
Place a bet
Pretend you are still stuck at Euston

The will be banning drink next.

and for dates how else would you be able to receive a call and say "I can't mate..I'm seeing that woman....." and as she sits from returning from the toilets say "...yeah the fit one" smile say sorry and turn it off.

canine i don't think so the opinion i got is that he did it so often as when he finished the calls twice he never said sorry about that
i couldn't care less about an article as i'm more of a realist but i can see the point of letting someone know you are ok but you should say to the person you are meeting " i'm just going toilet" then in the toilet phone a relative or friend and tell them you are ok

As i said earlier to sit in front of a date meet up and talk on the phone as if you have all the time in the world is rude and its not just happened to me but a friend to in which we both agreed it shows a lack of respect
the best thing to do is to just answer the call say your ok and then on the phone say sorry but i've got to go but i'll talk to you later
it's simple and not rocket science

the other way just spells out get rid lol..
hope the men and ladies are taking notes for future meet ups he he..

Lisa, I probably didn't make it very clear, but the idea of asking a friend to call you and confirm they will be meeting you is intended to be a subtle way of saying to the guy, "As this is our first meeting I've taken precautions in case you try to follow me home, mug me or whatever afterwards."

I can think of many circumstances where a date talking on the phone would seem rude or irritating, but I can also think of many where it would not.

I wouldn't expect someone to put their personal and social life on hold just because they agree to go out for a drink in a pub. Then again, I wouldn't expect them to ignore me completely every time there's an interuption.

It isn't black and white for me, and I'm unlikely to make a judgement about a person based solely on how they handle incoming calls.

Actually, thinking about it, I might wonder what sort of person they were if they constantly ignored people calling them.

I think its getting a bit off topic, but at the end of the day, I pay a monthly bill for a mobile phone service, I am in total agreement with not using it whilst driving, due to the obvious safety concerns, I agree that a noisy tosser shouting his business for all and sundry to hear is not what you need when out for a quiet pint or a meal can spoil the occassion, and pub staff should be allowed to treat them as a loutish customer and ask them to pipe down or take it outside.

But when it comes to taking a call in a sensible manner and keeping your conversation between you and the caller, that is your right as a bill-payer, and I dont see how banning mobiles from pubs is going to be good for business, a lot of the diners in my local are reps and travelling tradesmen who rely on their phones to get the work that keeps the money coming in so that they can afford to eat in pubs!

People taking calls on mobiles never bothered me, it's just a way of life.

So you're in the pub making calls to get together the lads, you have to do it outside in the rain? Stuff that, onto the next pub.

A client calls, it's regarding that contract you've spent all week trying to pitch, you're having lunch, the pubs quiet but you now have to go outside and try and win him over to the tune of noisey traffic?! "sorry can you repeat that, I couldn't hear you". Doing business in a pub is bad but not being able to hear the other person is much worse.

I spend a lot of my time having pub lunches (not drinking alcohol). During the day my local pub has a very work orientated clientel. The landlord setup free internet to attract these types, why? probably because they buy a lot of food. Glance around the room and you will see laptops everywhere and people on mobile phones. However, the atmosphere is always quiet, nobody ever shouts.

Weekend trade is totally different, the atmosphere is partying with loud music, people go outside to use their phones so they can hear the callers.

I love my local it's the best pub I've ever been to and it's right here in the heart of Luton. The reason the pub is so well kept is probably because they are making bucket loads of money. I couldn't imagine them ever banning mobiles it would kill off their day trade, the pub would suffer.

It's okay to have phone in pub as long as when you pick it up and says "Sorry, busy at the moment, call me in an hour" and hang up. Should have it in case of emergencies, but for god sake! Just because you can have the ringtone volume to 100% doesn't mean you should! If your half deaf, use the vibrator instead.

Why should you? Whats wrong with taking it into a quiet corner or the toilets and dealing with the call, or is beer more important?

They allow vibrators in your local? Well that'll give the customers something to do when they can't use their phones in the pub.

Then you can be half deaf and blind as well

My personal moan about mobile users is the bluetoothed/ hands free ones, who insist on shouting loudly behind you or in front of you. As you sometimes can't immediately see the device it is perfectly logical to believe they are shouting at you.

I don't think we should be dictated to about our mobile phone use, but I do believe we should be respectful to other people with regard to our usage.

I think some folk who have mobiles must have hard of hearing friends because lots seem to go in to shouting mode when using one.

They've introduced 'quiet' carriages on many trains. Maybe pubs and could introduce 'quiet' areas where it's feasible?

Maybe restaurants could have 'noisy' areas where the "I'm on me mobile! Sell ICI! Tell him he's fired unless he closes that 100k deal today! Send the figures to my Blackberry! I'll shout louder in case somebody doesn't think I think I am important" people could go and impress each other?
