Sounds like the OP has never been in the unfortunate situation of desperately wanting a child and not being able to afford the help that is out there to attain! It's a very heartbreaking and deparately sad situation to be in - especially since the couples who go this route have probalby suffered through miscarriages and the empty horrible feeling of not being able to have a child with the person you deeply love and desire!
Pulling at heart strings doesn't even remotely answer the question should OHIP cover a non-medical necessity. I've known people that desperately want their own car, yet I do not believe the government should provide a car to anyone who can't afford one.
I thank God that I live in Ontario and have the gifts that our health care system has to offer!
Every dollar spent on non necessityies is a dollar that could be spent on reducing waiting times, hiring more doctors, upgrading hospital emergency wards.
We should all be greatful - because this same system may have something to offer you in your personal life - that you deem acceptable to spend your tax dollars on - perhaps something that may save your life!
Most people are grateful for a system that pays medical for all in a fair and equitable manner. One would think that long before the Ontario government ventures into helping infertile couples that they would cover things like necessary dental work - or necessary eyeglasses - or hearing aids for people going deaf.
This just shows me that we still have compassion somewhere in the Ontario government and that they understand the plight of the people involved!
It actually shows how misguided and short-sighted politicians are. Offering fertility treatment is a vote grabbing attention getter. Nothing more.
If a couple can't afford the $10,000 it costs for fertility treatment how on earth can they afford to bring a child into this world and properly care for them?
