Sounds like the OP has never been in the unfortunate situation of desperately wanting a child and not being able to afford the help that is out there to attain! It's a very heartbreaking and deparately sad situation to be in - especially since the couples who go this route have probalby suffered through miscarriages and the empty horrible feeling of not being able to have a child with the person you deeply love and desire!

Pulling at heart strings doesn't even remotely answer the question should OHIP cover a non-medical necessity. I've known people that desperately want their own car, yet I do not believe the government should provide a car to anyone who can't afford one.

I thank God that I live in Ontario and have the gifts that our health care system has to offer!

Every dollar spent on non necessityies is a dollar that could be spent on reducing waiting times, hiring more doctors, upgrading hospital emergency wards.

We should all be greatful - because this same system may have something to offer you in your personal life - that you deem acceptable to spend your tax dollars on - perhaps something that may save your life!

Most people are grateful for a system that pays medical for all in a fair and equitable manner. One would think that long before the Ontario government ventures into helping infertile couples that they would cover things like necessary dental work - or necessary eyeglasses - or hearing aids for people going deaf.

This just shows me that we still have compassion somewhere in the Ontario government and that they understand the plight of the people involved!

It actually shows how misguided and short-sighted politicians are. Offering fertility treatment is a vote grabbing attention getter. Nothing more.

If a couple can't afford the $10,000 it costs for fertility treatment how on earth can they afford to bring a child into this world and properly care for them?

You've got to be kidding, yet another way our government goes just throwing tax payers dollars around.

Well after skimming through this thread, My firm opinion is that Ohip is outta their minds. Call me an insensitive prick if you like, but as mnay people have said, you are not going to die if you don't have a baby of your own. The world is so over populated as is (just my opinion), and for those people who say they want a child but refuse to adopt. Well again in my opinion, they really don't want a child that badly or they would take the options that have been available for years.

Why should my taxes go to paying for somebody else to have a child. Let alone potentially 30 grand per person. Sorry but I am not Bill Gates, that amount of money does get noticed. Want a child from your own loins, FOOT THE BILL or find another way.

I can see there are very strong opinions on this subject. There should be public discussions before the passing of this bill. I for one, see the value in it. I believe our declining birth rates are part of the impetus here. There are many tax incentive programs now and in the past were developed for just that reason.

In my own case, I had multiple surgeries that were covered by medicare and then two IVF attempts that were not. We applied to adopt, not necessarily a new born, etc. but as i was 35, we were told the waiting list could be 10 years or more, chances were we would be disqualified as being too old (there is a combined maximum age limit). We were ultimately blessed through private adoption.

I am quite sure there will be stringent qualifications necessary to participate in the program.
