Why the attack on what I said? I apologize ... it was not meant as an attack.
It's just that so many have been emphasizing the "discussion with parents" in an effort to infer that the President would say something inappropriate to the children of our nation ... to the children of any nation who might have the privilege of hearing what he has to say.
He's a self-made man and no matter what his politics are ... we have to admit he did it pretty much on his own ... with the encouragement of a single mom and aging grandparents. He did it by putting his nose to the grindstone and applying himself.
I know what that's like and did that myself ... 30 years after the fact though. I got a late start because I put my family ahead of me. But I pulled myself up by the bootstraps and did it and not too shabby if I do say so. A 3.8 grade average in nursing school after being out of school for 30 years is nothing to hang one's head over.
I suppose that's why I have so much respect for anyone who has done anything similar. I just don't understand the Republican hate and how they appear to want to put everything down that any Democrat suggests ... even if it might be really good for their child or family or our nation. | |

Posted: 9/8/2009 7:14:03 PM | I think it was deplorable that a president is not able to speak to our kids anytime he feels like it about anything,you can decide after the fact if you feel it was ok he was the president a child does not have the right to not sit there and listen,a child cannot get up and walk out on his principal or walk on his teacher without severe reprimand and he should have the same rights with his president,that is 100% compliance .
Its funny though,not a single child had a problem with this only their parents.I don't think its up to the parents at all. I don't care whether this was a pep talk or not,when the president wants to speak he shouldn't have to hear a bunch of the sky is probably falling bull or show a script or what if "he might say something I don't like",How dare you people, what country do you live in, are you Americans or what,its pathetic that all citizens do not listen to what a president says. Many of you claim your only protecting all our children or your child,its plain old un American,others may coddle your feelings and right,I say though that you should be ashamed of yourself for sheltering your kids from the leader of America.
What did you expect the leader of the free world was going to say to your little kids .makes a lot of us wonder .
Its hard to imagine in a country where virtually no parent ever goes into a school and checks the teachers lesson plan or checks a principals speach before he speaks yet these same people by the tens of thousands are so afraid of our president that they have to read a script before their kids are allowed to listen to him.
Get real and try acting American.Its too bad you have total disgust for our president but do you have to pollute your childrens minds while your at it.admit it,you'd never in a million years have to read a script of what the principal was going to tell the kids ! | |

I am a veteran. I'm wondering, should Republican soldiers refuse orders from this commander in chief until their dear party leaders and Rush Limbaugh approve them?
I wasn't aware of the Arlington, TX hypocrisy. Sick! Let them secede from the United States, take all the rabid thumpers with them, crown GWB king, put up a great big fence, form a circular firing squad with all their guns and ammunition...
I feel sad for Michelle Obama and hope that her children don't watch the news. Michelle had reservations about Barack's decision to run; I'll bet she never ever imagined this kind of idiocy and blind hate on so simple an issue.

Posted: 9/11/2009 2:58:19 PM | Those parents that kept the kids from attending school and the districts that chose not to carry the presidential address to the students imparted a very bad lesson that day. As educators of those children, they should know that the kids learn more from what they see the adults doings than from what they say.
The opponents of the president missed a good opportunity to educate the children on the importance of civil discourse. In my opinion, the biggest mistake was the opposition to the idea of asking the students to write about their ideas to help the country in the current situation. Just the idea of asking the students to write their ideas is a good thing in and of itself. Believe me, when it comes to writing, the students need lots and lots of encouragement. What better incentive than the idea that their essays would be read by peple working by the president, perhaps the president himself. Besides, it is very possible that some of the kids would come up with some excellent ideas that people haven't thought of yet. I am all for listening to the kids because theirs is the future.
Iam not a republican, and I am way left of the democrats, but I remember that when my daugther was in school the teacher asked the students to write to the president. I didn't object, even though George H. Bush was a republican. When my daughter received a reply signed by the president (although I seriously doubt that he wrote it,) my daughter was very happy and proud of herself. She gained a lot of confidence in her abilities and did very well in school, although she has been voting for the democrats ever since she registered as a voter.

After seceding during the Civil War, Texas was allowed to re-enter the union after ratifying the 13th Amendment. The 13th Amendment banned slavery in the United States and any territory subject to its jurisdiction.

Parents also should have the right to view what is going to be taught in regards to the speech, and/or view the speech portion with their child. Wow ... so much for the "boogie man" ... eh?
I still can't imagine what parent in their right mind could expect the President of the United States to say anything to their child ... that might be in any way inappropriate. With his own children no doubt watching as well.
An if they have major objection they should be able to except their child with no repucussions on the child. Ya ... my guess is that they might ask the teacher to excuse their child ... because they are advocates of the "dumbing down of our nation".
Teachers should hopefully have the option to develop their own lesson as they deem not as the WH deems. I hear that ... the stooooopid people who live in the White House ... what would they know about education ... eh? Oh wait ... wasn't the President himself a teacher? Didn't he teach Constitutional Law at University of Chicago for 12 years?

As for your remark on how he was voted as one that unites and in reality turns out a divider,I have no idea where the thought comes from,virtually every conservative and Republican came into this election hating what Obama was doing all through the campaign and still,the same ones are still hating his plans,I see virtually no difference,it was a 50/50 going in and it still is,and I still see every great thing he does ignored by the same people,some even going as far as saying the country is merely healing itself.He has tried hard to unite those against him yet they as a majority still call for all the old ways.He was voted for on a platform of change in this country,yet those opposed refuse to get rid of the old ways,whether it the broken parts of health reform or the war or any other aspect of his campaign promises,so he shows he's sticking to his plans and campaign goals and its the GOP unwilling to change and join in,sounds like the divided are choosing to stay that way,so you can leave Obama out of this,its up to the GOP to try to grasp what doing away with business as usual means,its certainly doesn't mean continuing with every failed programs we had before.

I live in the real world and hear racism all the time, as a combat vet that served with many minorities I know one thing for sure we all bleed red, I learned during that period of my life that the color of a man's/woman's skin does not define the man/woman
