Can a relationship affected by mental illness survive? Page 2 of 2    (1, 2)
Mine didn't survive. My husband was delusional and thought I was an FBI agent out to get him. I was prepared to stick with him and tried to get him help but he left the country in order to get away from me and my government plot against him. If he would have actually been able to get treatment then yes, I think we may have had a chance though it would have been a long hard road. Without treatment though we didn't stand a chance.

Can a relationship affected by mental illness survive?

To understand how emphatically ridiculous this question really is, consider the vast multitudes of horribly failed relationships in which both parties are supposedly normal, psychologically healthy adults.

Mental illness is no more an indicator that a relationship will fail, than a supposedly sound mind is indicative that a relationship will thrive.

no. it strains the relationship.
be honest with your hubby or boyfriend, about having a mental problem. Dont flower it with todays political jargon.

was your hubby schizo? They hear voices, and can develop paranoia!

There's such a wide range of mental illnesses that it's hard to answer this question definitively "yes" or "no." If a person has mild depression controlled with medication, likely yes. If a person has a personality disorder, such as borderline, likely no. It depends on the severity of the mental illness, how much the person suffering it wants to control it, and whether they take their meds and get therapy if they need it.

I have been in two relationships with guys having various mental illnesses, and both relationships failed, I believe, due to the effects of their mental illnesses.

I have no experience with bipolar disorder so could not venture a guess on the OP's original question.
