I think the main issue is that he went way off into left field to bash someone and then immediately began back-tracking because he knew he was out of line.

I don't think he was out of line. He probably back-tracked because he knew people would make a big deal out of it. The amount of attention situations like this get is unreal. I can understand why people follow the President's every move, but why do people give a **** about celebrity drama when they aren't personally involved?

This is such a NON-issue. I guess it was a slow news day. Why should Obama not have an opinion, just like anyone else does? It's not like he gave a speech about it- he spoke off-the-cuff, probably aware that he could be overheard, but it's okay for people to talk about "stuff," even the President! Why shouldn't he have an opinion and verbalize it? Tempest in a teapot.

This isn't so much a problem as it is just an indicator of his need to step out of his lane. The insulting of small-town people in PA and the incident with Officer Crowly are more "serious" incidences of this same problem.

I wasn't aware that having a job precluded you from doing anything but that job... or that even speaking casually was disallowed.

What you see as a problem, I see as no big deal. That's most likely because I'm not doing my utmost to find things to be offended over ....

Besides, it's not like he was calling nuclear capable countries the "axis of evil" or anything.

I thought conservatives are always looking for ordinary people they can relate to?
He said what most average Joes thought. Good on him.
Wish more people would put unruly celebrities in their place.

love conservatives. its plainly obvious that no matter what obama said on this absurd issue (we are talking about MTV here people. not nuclear weapons) the OP would have been unhappy.

and having met and worked with Kanye personally a number of times (as Obama has) he's a major ass no two ways about it. obama was completely right.

and santa, there is a major difference between a speech to congress about matters of great import being interrupted and a comment on an MTV award believe it or not. when you listen to some addressing a group in a serious meeting do you yell out insults a lot?

Kudos to the Prez...... And yes as a citizen in this GREAT country the man has the right to say what he wants to.... Just like we all do. Just because he is the president does not mean that he is to be held to a higher standard.... If you want him at a higher standard, then buddy you need to buck up and support your own standards a little higher.
If and when you spout off about something, are you willing to take the criticism of others or are you going to shout about your rights to free speech? The president also has the right to free speech.
Just for the record... I agree... Kanye West is a Jackass.... or to be politically correct... an AssJack......

So now Obama is wrong for stating his opinion on a subject that's been getting massive media attention in the media the last few days.

Wow, just wow. Calling it grasping at straws would be kind.

I can't wait until next week when he's getting criticized for breathing incorrectly because apparently that's what it's coming to.

ok, since you have stated the article link i did take a moment to read it to see why you were so upset over it OP.

I think perhaps we read different articles because i could have sworn that if we had read the same article we would have reached the same conclusion.
so why did our opinion on this matter differ so much. i'm not sure but lets find out.

now before we read the article i guess we have to understand that Obama is the president of the united states and the FATHER of two DAUGHTERS

this is a quote from that article.

During what sounds like informal banter before the interview begins, Obama is asked whether his daughters were annoyed by West's hijacking of Swift's acceptance statement, according to an audio copy that was posted on TMZ.com.
so he was asked what his daughters thought

"I thought that was really inappropriate," Obama says. "What are you butting in (for)? ... The young lady seems like a perfectly nice person. She's getting her award. What's he doing up there?"
so, here is a comment that i think is something any father would say. you conveniently forgot to mention that part case it would make obama seem more human i guess.

A questioner chimes in, "Why would he do it?"

"He's a jackass," Obama replies, which is met with laughter from several people.

The president seems to quickly realize he may have gone too far, and jovially appeals to those assembled that the remark be kept private. "Come on guys," he says. "Cut the president some slack. I've got a lot of other stuff on my plate."

it's great you mention the fact that obama said jackass but you forgot to mention that the part about the
The president seems to quickly realize he may have gone too far,

if someone is trying to use a entertainer to "ge his message out" as you say then he wouldn't have realized he had gone too far (direct quotes from the article YOU were upset by).

We all hope that our political leaders are honest and have our best interests at heart. It is impossible for someone , no matter who they are, to watch their words every single moment , every day. In this case you may be taking issue with a NON-issue. the president was not on state business mocking a foreign leader. In this situation i would say the comments were made more by a father then by a president.

for the record, Kanye IS a jackass for doing that to the young lady. there is absolutely NO excuse for taking what should have been a young lady's happiest moment of her life and turning it into a joke. He has a habit of doing stunts like this and has no regard for who he hurts as long as he gets media attention. Most of the world is calling him a jackass (and many people using terms a LOT worst0) so i don't see why this particular father of two girls should be any different. I absolutely agree with what obama said.

btw for those that want to hear the actual audio here is the link
http://www.tmz.com/2009/09/15/obama-calls-kanye-a-jackass/
so you can actually see what actually happened in the audio

it's great that people can concentrate on the jackass comment but when you listen to the full tape and it's context it sheds a lot of light on the issue.

actually i agree with the President on this. although i would call Kanye an ahole and major douchebag!! how dare he behave so outrageously? sounds like someone is a sore loser. what the hell is so f*cking wonderful about Beyonce anyway? i saw her last film and i wouldn't exactly say she is a good actress. certainly won't be getting any oscar nominations anytime soon. i think she is hugely overrated. nothing special at all.

Considering that celebrities use their positions and status to make their opinions on subjects known, I figure a politician has the same right. Might I point out the "Dixie Chicks" controversy?
It isn't as if celebrities have an informed opinion on many matters that they really shouldn't be speaking out for or against, but more like "who cares what they think"? Obviously their fans do....or else the celebrity garbage mills wouldn't be carrying their outrageous claims and documenting their actions.
Often, if a politician is asked about some celebrities latest antics, they haven't a clue as to what is being talked about.
I figure the prez is entitled to his own opinion....it need not reflect on his parties platform though! Many a politician is in disagreement with party policy...but follow through on it anyways!
A "town hall" type gov't works better...the wants of the people are made clear and any fool could be a leader then. Simply vote the way the majority wants it and you have a permanent job....buck the system and you get voted out. Real easy. But this would also make minorities tremble. Which is where a lot of politicians get shakey. I don't blame them either!

I hardly think calling someone a jackass is considered "bashing". Maybe if he went on a tirade about how MUCH of a jackass Kanye is then I could see your point OP. But he mentioned off handedly that Kanye did it b/c he was a jackass. I think it was rather witty and I've said similar things about other situations. Such as at work "Why did that doctor mess up that dictation so badly?".."Because he's an idiot?". I don't consider that bashing any more than I consider the Prez stating that Kanye is a jackass as bashing. :)

Simply put, as is often the case I agree with what President Obama has said. That having been noted, the guy has apologized profusely for his (furthermore IMO possibly staged) antics at that awards show, apologies are generally accepted I believe, so..... it's a done deal IMO. But his behavior that night WAS like that of a 'jackass', IMO, just as the Prez duly noted. I think KW probably realized it while he was doing it (again, if it wasn't all a put-on, like a pro wrestling-type 'drama' set-up).

I liked how Jay Leno asked Kanye what his mother, who recently died, would have thought of what he did. The usually talkative rapper was silent for a whole 12 seconds trying to control his emotions. And while he didn't admit that his mother would have been disappointed, I think right there, right then, it truly sunk in how his actions made him look.

Seriously though, it's like the saying "calling a spade a spade". The president was calling it as it is... Kanye IS a jackass.

The only people who have a problem with this, have a problem with everything Obama does anyways -SO FVCK EM!

Seriously, as Obama himself pointed out directly afterwards; there's more important chit to be upset about.

Offtopic, though -that knowyourmeme site had some funny takes on this -I was laughing my ass off!

Ah, but was he backtracking because he "knew he was out of line"? Or did he backtrack because he knew a segment of the population would fly off the handle if he didn't; because he KNOWS that they're just lying in wait for the next sound byte to froth at the mouth over?

you must be referring to ACORN segment that will be PO'd that he trashed a rapper?

What's up with Terry Moran running to Twitter like a gossipy little Perez Hilton? "OMG! Did you just hear what the President said? He said Kanye is a jack@ass!!!!1 LOLOLOL!!!111"

Kanye West seems to be unable to open his mouth without something stupid coming out of it. Whether it's his infinite racial wisdom of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina or his all important declaration that "Beyonce made one of the best videos of all time!" I think it was actually him that yelled out, "YOU LIE!" at the state of the union address.

What I want to know is why do we lose the good ones and get stuck with the bad ones? We lose Biggie and Tupac and yet we still have Kanye running around like an idiot.

And people are making way too big of a deal about President Obama's comments. He was asked his opinion on something before an interview, and he gave it. Whoopty do.

Since the House seems to be bringing up the very definite possibility of censure for Wilson........do you think.......the music industry has any such recourse for their own scoundrels?Wow....wouldn't that be a neat list to read...........
