Proposition them for man-sex. You'll either get free sex, or they'll never come to your residence again. Win-win situation.

I consider myself fortunate if I can even get them to talk about evolution, science, or this wondrous existence of ours.

Usually they seem to want to talk about the meaning of life - specifically that believing in their faith (or at the very least, accepting Jesus) gives life meaning. This is a good time to ask them about their families, friends, their goals and dreams. Then offer them sympathy that their families are meaningless, their friends are too, their hopes and dreams are meaningless, and the millions of other wonders of life are meaningless to them also...so much in fact that they need to invent a supernatural being with magic powers and pretend that this magic being loves them and that this imaginary love is what gives their life purpose. Which is what they need to believe since their lives are empty and meaningless without it.

I have just read in the Bible, John chapter 13: verse 34 the commandment to Love one another. The hardest commandment of all to achieve for all human kind. Some manage it and some dont. It's a tricky path to follow, but if we manage it a lot of our problems would miraculously be lessened wouldnt they? May be we should learn how to love? As we are all on a dating site isnt it the thing we are seaching desperately for?

So a few Jehovah's Witnesses showed up at my door preaching about Christ and what not. I think I spent more time talking then they did.

I don't believe a word of this. I think this is another I need to bash stupid religous folks agenda thread. To be honest, in every experience I have had with JW's they always overtalk me, and when I've tried to make a sacrilegious comment about it not being logical, theyALWAYS WALK AWAY as their religion prevents them from listening to such things.

I call bs. And besides. If you want to knock a religon, knock the ones that aren't the pragmatic ones. They look at the bible logically. They also know for a fact that Jesus wasnt born on the 25th of dec, and they also through away the crazy notion that the end of the world is near. Read up before you bash.

My father used to invite the JW in to debate theology with them. He loved that they kept sending better thinkers out to topple him.
Dad loved those talks and I'm sure the JW thought they had a possible convert (or maybe they were thriving on the exercise too). I asked Dad why have them in when you aren't interested in their religion and he said one needed to challenge ones ideas. I used to listen in sometimes, and ask dad later about the bits I didn't understand; we had good talks out of it too, he and I.

~~

I was living in Vancouver and had just hung up the phone from my brother's call telling me my father had died. I was in shock, reeling from the suddenness of it, even tho' it had been expected, and feeling around the edges of my mind for how it felt to be in the world without my father. And just then, the Jehovah's Witnesses showed up at my door...

They hadn't appeared at all in the few years I had lived there. I answered the door and told them now was not a good time. And the fellow pushed a bit, as they will. So I blurted out I'd just heard my father had died and didn't want to be disturbed. Oh my, the horrified look on that poor man's face! I felt awful for him. But somehow, strangely, rather vindicated too at inadvertently causing an interruption in how this man's day was going... same as he did to countless people when he knocked on their doors uninvited.

I closed the door and leaned against it and had one of those big, guilty laughs that come from the belly and consume you even while you know you really shouldn't be laughing at the awfulness of it.

JWs are far from perfect, and why are we all so insecure about a couple of punks coming to the front door?

if you are not curious about there version of life, etc,
tell them in a very firm way that you don't want to talk to them, and close the door with a smile, or what ever.

I sometimes talk to them, but thats just me.

I made the mistake of talking to one years ago. He was an old guy that kept talking about the beauty of the human hand and how could I believe it's design "just happened". I told him that his belief is the one that says it "just happened", not mine. He seemed to get flustered when I countered all his statements with the way I saw things. Anyways, he must of wrote down our whole conversation including my name etc, because he came knocking on a regular basis asking for me by name. I'll never do that again.
Now I tell them in a firm but polite way to turn around, get off my property and never come back.

As little as I care for the visits to my house by the young men in cheap suits, I have had some good conversations with JW's that were not trying to convert me (at least not overtly). The ones that I knew in college didn't seem to feel compelled to relentlessly seek out converts. Aside from not voting/taking part in self-governance, not celebrating birthdays (etc.) , and that the girls weren't instantly wow'd by my advances .....they were fairly 'normal'.

Even the ones that show up at my house have not been pushy. My experience with them appears to be similar to that of enigmaparadox. Usually I just tell them 'no thank you', and they move along to the next house. On the few occasions that I have actually thought to question them, they usually just look sort of confused and.....move along to the next house. Meh, maybe I'm just getting the 'second string' doorknockers?

I don't have a problem with them at all. When I was younger I did what my parents and grandparents did and hid from them or got pissed off cause they have the nerve to knock at my door. As I got older though and realized they're just people trying to better the world around them, I see them from a whole different angle.

I come straight out and tell them I'm buddhist. And they seem to respect that. I tell them that I don't really believe in God but that I may be wrong, cause we never know exactly what's going to happen until we actually die. And we usually have convos about being kind to others and tolerant and accepting, etc.

At the end they ask me if I want a pamphlet, I say sure and take it with a smile and a thank you and a have a great day!
Then I recycle it.

They're happy, I'm happy. I just taught my children how to have respect for others beliefs and how to interact with people in a positive way.

I don't understand the need to humiliate and scare them away. They may be stubborn but they're just people.

I had a pair of JW walking up my driveway one day right as my tween son was having a hissy fit for something I hadn't given in on. He was yelling very loudly and throwing cushions out the window at the time. I went to the door to see who was there and saw them walking cautiously backward down the lane...never to return again. Converting some families just isn't worth the risk I guess.

Ah yes. They showed up at my door one sunny day and I was ready. I knew they'd be coming at some point they had already left the pamphlets at my door twice before. We seen em pull up my long driveway, 2 well dressed young guys got out of the car and headed up to my porch. They knocked on the door and I jerked it open. My cousin ran outside with his shirt off hollerin "They've finally found us, don't let em take me away." He started circling thier car kinda looking under it and in the windows. They looked a little shocked and looked back at me.

I had my 20 gauge shotgun leaned up against the wall within easy reaching distance and started talking crazy asking "Who sent you, where are the others hiding. They said "Sir we are just here from the somethin or other church of christ and..." I cut them off and tried to get them inside. I said "Hurry before they see you." I'm tellin you those boys were backing off the porch fast and tried setting their pamphlet down on the dog house but I hollered "Don't leave that there, they are gonna find you." They snatched it back up and headed for the car. My cousin was still paraiding around the car yelling "Its them, they know everything, this is the same car." He was cussing and begging them not to take him again. He even licked the window after they got in it.

I can't remember all that was said, but the looks on their faces was priceless, they were scared. My cousin is about 300 pounds and for a minute I thought he had gone crazy. The only thing we were missing was the tin foil hats.(so they can't read our thoughts you know). They haven't been back for a couple years, but I'll be ready. I still laugh the way they looked at each other when I tried to get them inside, wasn't happenin, it was great fun. Reminds me......I need to make up some tin foil hats.

Dukky,

the witnesses came to my door and i asked them about their name, and what it means.
they gave me their spiel... then when they said they were witnesses of"god", I asked them in a surprised tone and said you've been alive for 6 million years!?!? and i got them so flustered by acting curious & dumb about every thing from gods/demons to the next door neighbors house furniture, ... for 30minutes

they left with such a perplexed look on their faces and were tring to be polite, though they were totally confused as to what just happened, and what to say next, that I've never been bothered since.

That was three months ago.
They haven't come back since.

Did I do something wrong?
No. They just obviously have a lot of people to visit, and haven't had time to get back to you. When I was in my teens, they visited about every 6 months for a few years. So you've got a bit of time to wait.

They won't really be threatened by your arguments. If they would, then they would have converted to evolutionism, wouldn't they?

Back when I was in my early 20's and living in an apartment in a small town, a pair of J.W.'s in their matching white shirts-dark pants-backpacks came knocking on the door one sunday afternoon. They might have been Mormons, they didn't say and I didn't ask, but anyhow I happened to have a neighbor I didn't especially like. They had just started their pitch when I glanced out the window and spotted this neighbor sitting on his front porch. Pointed to the window and told them I wasn't interested myself, but that he would love to talk to them. For a second it looked like one of them was about to lick his lips.
About 30 years later I would almost swear that I saw the same pair at a bus stop in my hometown over 100 miles away, or at least they looked the same and were wearing identical clothes. Makes you wonder if they are cloning them somewhere.

there is a reasonably large area of the brain that links with religion, as neuroscience will tell you.
how we involve ourselves with such philosophy is all down to our wiring.
consider the fact that man has followed many gods since the dawn of civilisation (whatever
happened to the sun worshipers, at least they could see their god, and understand its validity).
go forward in time to any period you like, and man will still be worshiping some or other diety.
the jw`s have only been around since charlie russell promoted the faith around the 1830`s, and though the`ve grown in vast numbers since, just like all religious beliefs, they will, one day, dissappear to make way for something new, as will all forms of religion that are around today.

I used to let them have their say, but you know, religion wears on you eventually. What I do now is quote this Christian line rather sternly and 'in their face' so to speak: "The kingdom of God is within you!" ...and so it is.. no need for preachin' or thumbin' gossamer thin bible pages if the kingdom is already within us, is there?

There's a truly funny skit on the net about The Jehovah's Witnesses who come to the door and hold out their humble little magazine, and then the person they've come to says "Well then, please tell me something about Jesus and your belief's" .... and there is then much fluttering and consternation and finally one of the Jehovah's says "It's just that we've never got to this bit before !" and they come completely undone and scramble off. I'll try and find the website the sketch is on and post tomorrow. I was laughing so much but also it seemed perfectly believable, the poor loves, nobody had taken it beyond being courteous and accepting the magazine!

The JWs are at least the most decent missionaries I've met, willing to talk with rather than at a person. Like anyone else they have concerns about preserving their body of doctrine by which they define themselves. I don't know of any doctrine that doesn't fall apart when examined in finer and finer detail and don't blame anybody for trying to avoid that result.

Dear Mr. Verzen,
"Did I do something wrong?"

Yes, you should have offered them lemonaide - get it together for when I come over preaching about - (oops I forgot) - well whatever it is that I will be preaching about.

Thanks,
