The influenza vaccine is a good guess of the strain that will be affecting people this flu season...yes, thats right its a vaccine against LAST YEARS STRAIN, they cannot anticipate exactly how it will have changed so when you get the 'shot', it contains the A and B strain... with the hopes that you'll not get sick.

Guess I'm the only person in the history of the world to never get sick from the flu shot..

I hope people aren't confusing the flu with catching a cold (which is mere coincidence).... The shot won't protect you from the common cold.

Thanks to an incompetent management at my work, I missed getting the flu shot last November. A month later, I got my a$$ handed to me by my first flu in 10 years. Guess I'm special.

No offence to anyone but all I see in this thread is a lot of FUD about the regular flu shot. Yes, it can have side effects for some people, but I doubt that I'm the only one who does not get sick when taking the shot. Furthermore, since I begun taking the shot a few years ago, I have not gotten sick with the flu. The odd cold, yes. But flu? Not since my 30's.

As far as the getting immunized for N1H1, I do agree with those who voice their reservations, but too strenuously. I do have a certain degree of confidence in the system. Even the more cynical would agree that it's in the best interest of the "system" not to have 4 million people suffer from complications from the vaccine.

I totally agree. All annual flu shots for me have been uneventful. Maybe some folks happen to unfortunately be inherently predisposed to BS. Of course there are always the conspiracy theorists as well..lol. Time to wash my hands of this thread.

body bags to a northern manitoba reservation was definatly a shcok. kind of a low blow there, but will bite my tongue entirely on that all together. but ive read in a few articles the h1n1 flu vaccination isnt a top health choice, a to which i didnt bother to read the full layout, but i still choose to not have any needle poke my skin. the way i see it is, people in the past lived without the coctails of pills and vaccinations many years ago, and i follow the same beleif. if im going to get sick im going to get sick. but what dont kill ya, only makes you stronger.

And there's the rub. Influenza (H1N1 or not) is a big killer every year. Vaccinations have made our lives better - there are fewer infections and subsequent deaths from diseases that a few generations ago killed thousands and thousands more people than they do now.

The CDC, which reports on the US only, estimates that 36,000 Americans die of the flu each year; these deaths are largely preventable with the flu shot... The H1N1 flu is apparently more severe and going to be more prevalent than regular flus are - it just seems to make sense to get the shot.

You are jocking, right? People indeed lived without immunization in the past, and they also used to have many, many kids just to see 2-3 make it to adulthood. Then, whenever an epidemic hit, millions died.

It is indeed your right to refuse immunization for whatever reason makes sense to you but the last quoted sentence of yours just doesn't make sense. Whould you not immunize your children because of some belief that you hold? Scary.

The same doctors that tell you to get the shot are the same doctors that tell ya to drink lots of water and wash your hands to help prevent getting the H1N1 and seasonal flu ... I realy do hope that doing some simple easy things keeps ppl from getting this ....

It is sad that ppl get this and fall ill and even die that have other medical problems ... what is very scary is how I have seen on the news a boy that was about 7 or so died and no other health issues and 2 days ago a woman in my town that was 24 with no other health problems died ... Its like this strand is getting even more deadly ....

I asked my kids if they were going to get the shot and they said no ... I thought that was ok or even a good idea seeing how the shot isnt realy tested yet anyways ... Now I worry about them along with my grandkids too...

Exactly! One bad roll out in 1976 doesn't a conspiracy make. There's tons of other things that used to kill us that have been controlled, although with the current trend for parents to avoid inoculating their children some long forgotten diseases are trying to stage a come back. I guess in a purely evolutionary way it's a form of population control, but it seems wrong to let the most vulnerable to suffer unnecessarily.

Exactly! One bad roll out in 1976 doesn't a conspiracy make.

Please let's not forget the polio epidemic of the 1950's. This outbreak hit pretty close to home in that one of my siblings contracted it and there were no polio vaccines at that time in history. Let me assure you that the outbreak of polio in the 1950's was no doubt of much bigger proportions than the one of 1976, if indeed there was one in 1976. I'm not saying there wasn't one then but rather I personally was not aware of a polio outbreak in 1976.

On the advice of my oncologist, I will be getting the H1N1 vaccine as well as the general flu vaccine when available. My immune system is pretty well shot so anything that can be done will be done to safeguard my exposure to any further maladies .

Tinkerbell I was referring to an earlier post about the flu vaccine released in 1976 in the US in response to a flu strain; turns out the vaccine hadn't been tested thoroughly and 500 people were stricken with severe reactions to it; 30 died. Sorry for being confusing in my comparison.

I'm sorry to hear about your health struggles - hopefully you make a full recovery as soon as possible.

I might re-think my earlier response, that I probably wouldn't get the shot. I would consider this different than a normal flu shot. More and more I'm hearing about this, the thought of catching it is pretty scary. Much scarier than any side effects from the vaccine.

As I was on the C-train last night coming back from the Saddledome, crammed up against several people with all of us breathing the same air in very close proximity, the only thing I could think of was H1N1
Here I sit today with a sore throat. Yeah me, the one that never gets sick, lol. It is most likely just that I"m fighting a cold but considering I hardly ever get those, maybe this is just a good warning for me that I'm not invincible. Nobody is.

because of my job.. i am REQUIRED to get it. The shot wont be here till end of OCTOBER.. and the peak is suppose to be in OCTOBER. The thing about the FLU SHOT is that it has the 4 most POPULAR or active FLU's... but H1N1 is CHANGING.. so what strain they are vacinating u for by the time u have the shot.. the H1N1 has CHANGED. There are sooo many different strains of the FLU.. YOU CAN NOT GET THE FLU from the shot.. * THAT MEANS NOT THE FOUR U ARE VACINATED FROM* but ... ALL THE OTHER ONES.. u can still get. That is why people say that they got the flu after getting the flu shot. AND you could have the flu.. when u get ur shot.. and that is why some people get sick soon after.

My kids will be getting it.. as the H1N1 hits children and the elderly. I will take what ever percautions that are offered.

Naw.

I'm not having the shot. Ever since I bought my new watch, I haven't been sick at all. It's an awesome watch too!

Awesome watches huh Uber? Unfortunately I had to replace mine last year.

In actuality though, I've been laid up for 3 or 4 days now with the stubbornest cold I can recall. (at least back to the 80s and my .... ummm....... cloudier years)

I still won't bother with any shot, but I KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt that I ain't invulnerable anymore.

What baffles me is how the medical establishment & the modern world always focus on a "shot or pill" as a fix for things. The land of the magic pill. Our solution is to always medicate ourselves rather than investigate the root cause of the problem. Hey, so what if I smoke a pack a day, sleep 4 hours and live off pizza..I can get a shot that'll stop me from maybe getting sick this year. cool.

On the wall of the washroom at my place of work is a reminder to wash your hands to prevent the spread of infection. Maybe that sign should include "eat a properly balanced diet and get 8 hours of sleep every night". The best immunity against a cold or flu is a healthy body..and that's YOUR business, not the doctor's.

There is always controversy when it come to good health. Even as recently as Monday night, the health field is unsure of just how many shots will be needed for the younger generation, some say 2 others say 3 or 4.

The biggest defence : Don't sneeze into your hands, sneeze into your sleeve to reduce the chance of spreading any "bugs" you may be carrying unknowingly, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 1 minute before eating and after using the washroom.

Hygiene is the number one defense for any flu, and the Canadian government has now begun a new ad campaign to promote this fact. Hygiene professionals have been preaching this for over 30 years, and it is only now that the Government of our country is putting it into practice, now they can use a new catch phrase and wash their hands of any fault for illness!

In todays society, we live a lot longer than even our grandparents, stats show that men and women now live to an average age of 82 years, up from 76 for our grandparents, a combination of healthy diet and lifestyle will add to this, and that lifestyle should include a good hygiene profile.

Nope. I am not. I agree with Anti-Elvis: too many of life's problems are solved with a pill perscription; just wash up good when youre finished yer' business...and remember to cough into your elbow if you feel a sneeze coming on. Better yet, try coughing behind yer knee for maximum preventation...

On the news today, they have done a study in Canada indicating that those who had a flu shot last year may be twice as prone to be infected this year, not verified tho!!

With that in mind, does that mean if we get the shot this year we will be twice as susceptible to any strains next year too??

So my decision is to not get the shot, wash hands on a regular basis and

.....if anyone sneezes in my face, I'll have to slap them silly!!

The results of that study were too small to be conclusive; I think it's irresponsible of the media to be distributing information that isn't accurate or helpful. It causes alarm and confusion and leaves people wondering what to do.

Second sentence of the second paragraph "It hasn't been validated yet, it's very preliminary," cautioned Dr. Don Low, microbiologist-in-chief at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.

I heard on 660AM this morning that if one received the flu shot last year, he/she could be at a higher risk for contracting the H1N1 virus.
