| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/26/2009 7:59:19 PM | Each day I walk through downtown Calgary to work and I see dozens of signs saying "wash your hands". I walk through the +15 and I see "hand sanitizer" stations all over urging you to use these to "stop the spread of the flu".
Yet, if I go stand at the bus stop or C Train station, I will board a vehicle that is so crowded people are nearly hanging out the doors. The air in the transit vehicles is stagnant and hot with no air flow. Moisture (from the people exhaling) dripping down the window.
I'll walk to work and forgo the flu shot thanks.

| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/26/2009 8:23:26 PM | | My God!! What has happened to our health care sector. This is appalling. Downright shameful. Just my "opinion"..??!! | |

| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/26/2009 8:41:56 PM | Haven't you turned into a thermometer yet Chair?? Aren't you s'pose to be glowing green right now?
Personally Chair, I think the more people chat about the subject, the more we're informing each other on this --- and if it wasn't for chats such as this, I'd prolly be glowing green myself right now!!

| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/26/2009 8:58:55 PM | Excuse me-flu is NOT just respiratory as you pointed out in describing a lot of gastro-intestinal symptoms!!! Norwalk is one of the seasonal viruses prevalent in the last several years. My son and his pregnant wife along with 1 year old daughter waited 6 hours in line for flu shots today. That is more than 2 hours per person immunized. The advertising sure made it sound as if they were prepared for lots of people so I do NOT understand this. | |
|
| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/26/2009 9:07:21 PM | Yes, the seasonal flu is respiratory. Those are H1N1 symptoms that I was referring to that has nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Not seasonal flu symptoms.
Regular seasonal influenza symptoms: ~fever ~headache ~fatigue ~dry cough ~muscle aches and pains (see.... no GI symptoms)
H1N1 is all of the above and MAY ALSO HAVE these additional symptoms: ~nausea ~vomiting ~diarrhea (Yes, it may have GI symptoms)
However, you were comparing Norwalk(the stomach flu) to seasonal influenza which it is NOT. Yes, it is a virus and as I mentioned before its gastrointestinal and there are no vaccines for norwalk.
I hope that's a little clearer for you. And yes, you're excused.

Weird, I have those symptoms every Sunday morning after I go to Ducky's pub !
|
| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/26/2009 9:14:12 PM | As I stated Vit D for us, NO SHOTS. Chairman when you get bored of complaining about those of us who will not be taking the shots, please do feel free to give all of us your address. We will be needing this so you can personally care for our children while we are in hospital after receiving the shot you think we as a collective society should take.
The last time I had ANY shot I was hospitalized. My doctors are very aware that a tetnus or flu shot will see me in critical condition in the hospital. So based on that alone...... I will not expose myself to a shot, nor would I poison my child. Don't worry chairman, while your watching him, he will consume mass amounts of food, drive you crazy with his energy, and questions. But I assure you he is a good boy..... you should have lots of fun for the 7-14 days it will take for me to recover from the illnesses as long as I dont get pneumonia again then you may have to watch him for 21-45 days. Hope you like getting up at 5am!

I cannot for the life of me imagine why!
|
| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/26/2009 9:15:33 PM | | Yes these symptoms are common and have many causes including stomach flu! The mode of transmission is respiratory primarily!!! | |
|
| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/26/2009 9:28:20 PM | The mode of transportation for H1N1 or the seasonal flu is NOT "primarily" spread through the respiratory system.... it IS spread through the respirator system.
"How is influenza spread? Influenza is spread from person to person when droplets of moisture from a person with influenza are spread through the air when that person coughs, sneezes or talks(respiratory system). These droplets contain viruses that when inhaled(back to the respiratory system) by another person can cause an infection."
~Taken from http://dhs.wisconsin.gov/communicable/FactSheets/Influenza.htm
Noroviruses are "primarily" spread through the fecal-oral route.
"How are Noroviruses Transmitted?
Norwalk and Noroviruses are transmitted primarily by the fecal-oral route. Having direct contact with vomit or feces from an infected person and then transferring the virus to the mouth from the hands primarily spreads the viruses. Secondary person-to-person transmission through sharing food, water, and/or utensils, or contact with the contaminated environment is also possible. Touching a contaminated door knob and/or stair railing and then touching your mouth is a possible method of transmission. In some outbreaks, there is evidence that the virus may be spread by the airborne route. These viruses are very contagious and only a few are needed to cause an illness.
The disease is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated foods and drinks, or by contact with an infected individual. Shellfish from waters exposed to raw sewage will concentrate virus particles from the water since they are filter feeders. Contaminated water can also introduce the virus to beverages, ice, eggs, fruits, and salad ingredients. Cooked foods may also be contaminated though handling by an infected individual. The virus can also be transmitted through close contact with an infected individual and/or touching contaminated surfaces."

No matter how H1N1, seasonal influenza or norwalk is spread.... hand washing is important to prevent the spread.
|
| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/26/2009 10:22:15 PM | another good way to avoid getting the flu........ avoid them little beasts known as children , god knows what kinda diseases most of them are carrying. if you see one, cross the street and try to not scream. dont goto places where large groups of the little critters congregate, ie schools, parks, daycares etc drs offices are full of diseases, have a look at how many filthy little kids stick them disgusting filthy toys in their mouths and then stick the toy back in the pile with the other toys how bout asking your dr to remove these toys or have them sanitized after every child plays with them or get the kids negligent parent to clean the toy before and after the kid plays with it there are more ways to stop the spread of diseases than just vitamins and hand wipes . | |

| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/26/2009 11:08:53 PM | | 'That Is Mommy' Good Luck with the vitamins...REALLY. Your situation obviously is an exception. But the majority of the general population has only to make what would seem to be a very simple decision. The reason for the H1N1 vaccine is to help the body build or establish immunity to the virus. I for one think that's ok. Not for one second do I believe the comments of some that the vaccine is dangerous and a threat to my life. That's ridiculous. As for babysitting I'll pass, I assure you though I do know it can be challenging raising kids. | |
|
| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/27/2009 12:12:31 AM | Any virus can be contracted through mucus membranes, nose, eyes, mouth, so if your hands are filthy and you rub your eyes, pick your nose, etc., yer screwed.
Stay at least six feet away from anyone coughing or sneezing.
Wash your hands often, and for at least 30 seconds.
|
| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/27/2009 3:56:34 AM | | From what I understand about how they create the witch’s brews they call vaccinations, I would sooner inject the used grease from a McDonalds deep fryer. | |

...Wash your hands often, and for at least 30 seconds....
and if you can't determine if it was long enough, it probably wasn't!! Try singing a verse from one of your favorite songs when you start washing, don't rinse until you get to the chorous, unless of course that is all you can remember, then don't rinse until you are starting the chorous for the third time, or sing happy birthday to yourself, that should take about 2 minutes, and then you will be sure to be rid of those pesky little critters!!
If you use those alchohol based hand sanitizers at all, remember, those other hands also touched the handle for dispensing it!!

If you use those alchohol based hand sanitizers at all, remember, those other hands also touched the handle for dispensing it!! But you're disinfecting your hands after touching any handle so it negates any bugs lurking there.
Ima waiting til the lines are shorter. 5 or 6 hours to get a flu shot is too much. My arse would be asleep.

| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/27/2009 5:10:18 PM | | Got my H1N1 shot today and I'm alright so far. Did take the suggestion of Tylenol and extra fluids though...just in case. | |
|
| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/27/2009 6:05:30 PM | Got mine today as my daughters pediatrician who went to medical school a lot longer than I did recommended her to go as she has asthma. Same from the chief medical doctors. It took less than an hour as I went in between rushes at 2:30 I think the thing to go by is if there is a respiratory condition that you have an oz. of prevention is worth a pound of cure. For all of you who do not want it, wash your hands, use your sleeve on door handles and hope and pray that if you get it you are not one of the statistics. | |
|
| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/27/2009 6:33:40 PM | I got my H1N1 vaccination today as well. I am considered high risk so it was imperative that I get it. I arrived at the Whitehorn EMS station at 12:55 p.m., was vaccinated and was walking back out the door at 1:25 p.m. - 30 minutes and it was over and done with. No fuss, no muss and no long line ups. | |
|
| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/27/2009 7:50:56 PM | | I'll be getting mine at work. Radio reports for this area (Lethbridge and Medicine Hat) today had waiting periods of up to 4 hours. Even though I'm a firm believer in immunization there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that I would stand in line for 4 hours (especially when some stood outside in a snowstorm for over an hour). How to discourage people from being immunized in one easy lesson!!!!! | |
|
| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/27/2009 8:22:21 PM | | If you are coughing a lot or working with people who are coughing a lot, it is also a good idea to wear a mask!!! | |
