For those of you who think vaccine production is 'voodoo' here is a good article that explains the history of vaccine development and how vaccines are produced today:

Got mine and my kids H1N1 shot today!

I went for my penicillin shot today! It hardly hurt at all and the line was shorter than usual at the free clinic cause of the H1N1 rush. All in all made for an AWESOME day and the pus and itching have subsided

Modern medicine!!!! Where it's at.

There will never be a vaccine to prevent stupidity

Have you ever given thought to what life without stupidity would be like? Our economy would be decimated man.

Imagine, no stupidity on the roads, we'd have almost no accidents. Think of the laid off workers and claims people. And the cops. And ambulance, firefighters, etc. And what about those in IT? I'd be jobless. No more "I couldn't get that floppy disk thing out, so I used melted butter, did I ruin it?** The fast food industry would be wiped out...no one would be stupid enough to eat that. All those people in "returns" at the store because you bought the wrong shirt? Gone. And how about TV? Imagine all those cool shows showing stupidity...GONE. Then again, Kate & the 8 or whatever would be gone too. Hell, TV would be like gone, except for Survivorman, Ghost Hunters and Dexter. And Miley Cyrus would be a broke ass teen because no one would buy her record AND her dad would drive a truck. Britany? She couldn't even work the pole because no one would be STUPID enough to pay to watch her dance. The list is endless man. Stupidity IS what keeps our population going.

BUT..most importantly, without stupidity...we'd have no POF. Nobody in their right mind would spend copious hours surfing a website trying to pick a potential spouse based on a dated picture and a description that says "I love to laugh and my friends are important".

Stupidity. The pillar of the Western economy

**Yes, in 1999 someone DID put butter in the floppy drive after they couldn't find the eject button

Alta flu response plan predicts 130 to 400 deaths

Alberta Health Services’ latest pandemic response plan says 25 per cent of Albertans will get swine flu this fall and winter and 130 to 400 people will die.

The report released earlier this month said the latest data suggests 875,000 people will become infected during this “second wave” of H1N1 in Alberta.

“It is expected Alberta’s total hospitalizations will range between 3,800 to as many as 11,400 patients, of whom 15 to 25 per cent will require admission to an intensive care unit,” says the plan.

But Health Minister Ron Liepert downplayed these numbers when Liberal health critic Kevin Taft read from the pandemic response plan in the legislature Wednesday.

“What this member is referring to is the absolute extreme situation,” said the minister.

“And to stand in this house and say that somehow the department is predicting that hundreds of people are going to die from H1N1 is not accurate.”

The swine flu outbreak has claimed a dozen lives in Alberta so far and about 200 people have been hospitalized.

But thousands of people are now reporting flu symptoms and hospitals, clinics and doctors’ offices are packed with flu patients.

The province began offering swine flu vaccinations this week, but people in Edmonton and Calgary were forced to wait in line for hours — some places up to six hours — to get their shots.

Liepert apologized Tuesday for the long lineups and said 11 more clinics were being added and 400 pharmacists across Alberta would soon be administering the vaccine.

“Across the province we are having obvious signs that the number of cases of H1N1 is increasing,” Liepert told reporters Wednesday.

“All I can say is that the health-care system is coping the best that it can.”

Seasonal flu usually results in about 17 deaths in Alberta, but does not affect nearly as many people, says the report.

Taft says these numbers suggest Alberta’s health care system will eventually be overwhelmed with flu patients.

“Given the mess of the lineups for vaccinations, are they any better prepared at the intensive care units? Because that’s going to hit next week or the week after.”

Liepert faced a barrage of questions in the legislature on the province’s swine flu preparedness. He offered assurances that hospital beds will be available in case there’s a surge of swine flu cases.

He also accused Liberal Leader David Swann of trying to “politicize” the H1N1 pandemic.

“What we intend to do is ensure that as many Albertans as possible get vaccinated so that as few as possible have to use our health care system,” said Liepert.

“Shouldn’t that be what we should all be striving for instead of standing in this legislature and spreading fear?”

The minister also said that 100,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine were administered in the first two days of the province’s vaccination program.

Flu vaccine was also sent to aboriginal communities in the province — enough to vaccinate roughly half their residents, said Liepert.

“I’m told by our chief medical officer that in many cases they’ve already run out, so that’s a good news, bad news situation,” he said.

“They’ve run out, but the good news is they’ve actually vaccinated 50 per cent of their residents.”

Welcome Shaun!

Oilers player diagnosed with swine flu

The Edmonton Oilers confirmed that a player on their team has been diagnosed with the H1N1 flu, the club announced after their 3-0 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday.

The club didn't say which player contracted swine flu, but multiple media outlets are reporting it to be defenseman Ladislav Smid.

There are no other confirmed cases of H1N1 among the Edmonton players, coaches or support staff. However, a number of individuals have been suffering with the seasonal flu or flu like symptoms.

"People in the community will be affected by this flu and our players are not immune to this new virus," said Dr. Dhiren Naidu of Edmonton's medical staff. "It's important to note that our player recovered in very short order and has since resumed playing. We continue to be diligent in our defenses against the virus and encourage everyone to do the same. Hand washing, paying attention to the symptoms, staying home if you are ill are all measures to be taken. In fact, I would direct everyone to heed advice regarding H1N1 as issued daily by Alberta Health."

Smid played nearly 20 minutes during Thursday's game and has four assists this season.

Earlier in the day, the Avalanche confirmed backup goalie Peter Budaj was diagnosed with swine flu.

Tell me this.....how many of these thousands of people are actually being tested for the virus H1N1.....not many!

Because people come down with a cold or flu, and have similar syptoms, does NOT mean they've contracted swine flu.

If my kid gets sick and I take him/her to the doctor, there is NO WAY in hell that the doctor is sending him for blood work unless he's got respiratory problems.

Too many are assuming it's swine flu and it could just be a strain that's been around for decades.

I got an email from a g/f of mine today, she's diagnosed with h1n1, and the doctor has told her that her lungs are clear, and to keep doing what she's doing, which is practising safe precautions and drinking lots of fluids.

I think I'll get it, and the "normal" flu shot as well, since ten million more people seem to die from the normal flu.

In Alberta about 17 people die yearly from the regular flu. Here in Alberta we have already had 12 people die of H1N1 and flu season has just begun.

From the Alberta Health Services website:

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Information for the General Public

Have there been deaths in Alberta associated with Pandemic (H1N1) 2009?

A form of H1N1 virus has been contributing factor in several deaths in Alberta. It is important to remember that every year, 4,000 Canadians die from the flu. Many of these people have underlying health problems that make them more at risk of serious consequences when they get the flu. Situations like this are common and expected. Information is being gathered about who is at increased risk. At this point, PHAC has not provided this information beyond the advice regarding pregnant women.

It is expected that those who are at higher risk for influenza-related complications are also higher risk for severe H1N1 disease. This includes people with chronic disease or immune compromise, or children under 23 months. These groups should be advised to seek medical assessment if they develop influenza like symptoms.

And nearly 500 were killed in horrific car accidents. Roads still filled with cars though...

Most telling, the death rate from Heart Disease is 201 per 100,000 in Alberta. Far and away, the number 1 cause of Heart Disease is completely attributed to poor diet, lack of physical fitness, smoking, drinking heavily, etc. I think the number was around 80%. Number 2 reason was genetics (thank Mom and Pop).

I'm not saying that being concerned about this flu is wrong. What's most baffling is that we're so concerned about some flu yet so cavalier about our health otherwise. We still continue to live unhealthy lives...poor food choices, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, etc.

People always say "My health comes first" and really I think that's a bunch of B.S for too many of us. Lemme tell ya..getting really sick..where you think "it's over" r e a l l y sucks man. Bluntly, I'll take a bad case of the flu 3 times a year for eternity before ever having to face "it's over" again.

Live well. It's all you got.

What the other half of the residents who have not been vaccinated ....... do they not count? What if they want to be vaccinated??? I hope vaccines were sent out to ALL communities, so those who want to vaccinated can be....sheeze

My problem with a lot of diseases, and bad things, is we seem to try to select our destiny...
Case in point... Smoking = bad, drinking = bad, my dad gave up both. Got into a pretty good state of health, before the Alzheimers set in. That, weakened him to the the point, where the pneumonia was set to end his life. Against the odds, he did beat the pneumonia, but Alzheimers finished him. Call me a fatalist, but I think when it is your time, it is your time.

A side note, 1 pregnant lady that died from H1N1 was the lead story on KTLA yesterday...
One. It does make one wonder about the media, and their motives with this... Anyone recall anything about the impeding West Nile pandemic that was supposed to happen last summer?

You better clear your comments with RBG before questioning the motives of media.

As for being a fatalist - we have brains and we should use them. If there is a way to avoid risk then it makes sense to do so.

I tried to go for the shot today but the lines are still too long... and now it sounds like the province will run out of the vaccine by Monday... sigh. They didn't plan this well at all.

The recent h1n1 death in Edmonton was a young and healthy mom and now a young boy is without his mom. So many people who are choosing to not get the shot feel since they are young and healthy that the chances are they will survive. Chances are they will. Well most of them will. Why gamble? Why gamble with all your loved ones who you will pass it onto?

That's the way I see it. Why take the risk if you don't have to. What good is medical research and advancement if nobody is any better for it?
