| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/31/2009 1:04:53 PM | ^^^^ Forget that he dropped out of school..ask yourself how come a guy that spent his career as a radio & TV dude..and worked for Telus becomes the "Minister of Health". Should a minister have SOME experience maybe? At least some exposure to understand what challenges the health care system endures on a daily basis?
Years ago, when I was living in Ontario, we had a Minister of Health. I can't remember her name but I remember she was a chain smoker. That's like being a marriage counselor when you're a serial dater.

| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/31/2009 7:09:09 PM | Did I read somewhere a year or so ago, this Health Minister was the same guy who ripped apart the Education system as Minister before being shifted into health? Not sure, just wondering. He doesn't seem to be well informed. (I'm trying to be "Politically Neutral" here). I'm one of those "High Risk" people who hasn't gotten the shot. I'm not convinced this shot is a good thing. It's been pushed pretty hard from all levels and I've learned to use caution when being pushed. The Doctors pushed me hard for six years to be on medication that ruined my life. These meds changed me, and I lost everyone I was close to, and everything that an awesome life brings with it. I tried to quit them, but because the doctors said I would die within 48 hours if I did quit them, there was a lot of intervention, including the police being called in. Not because of any bad attitudes, but because the doctors said so. I successfully quit them two and a half years ago (I went away for awhile and didn't tell anyone I was quitting the meds). These same medical specialists, just this past spring, report that they are stunned by my healing progress. As Daisy mentioned couple of posts ago (finally someone said what I've been thinking), high risk people SHOULD NOT be lining up in cold weather for 6 hours. I doubt my immune system (or my back from all the standing) would last. I'm feeling healthy and not really going out much. I do go to Yoga almost daily and have thought about the possibilities of contacting something there. I listen carefully for those around me for weezing and coughing. So far, so good.
Two stories: A very good friend of mine (a guy I grew up with from about 5 years old) who lives in Vancouver is also a high risk person. He has severe complications stemming from Diabetes. He did catch this flu. three weeks of hell, but finally starting to feel better. Didn't need hospitalization, just stayed close to home. His doctor told him he will be stronger to fight the next, more powerful strain that they know is comming. We talked about all this for a bit. When we were young, our Mom's rushed us over to the little kid down the block for playtime when they came down with something like mumps or measles or chicken pox, etc. (you catch the drift). We were being exposed at a young age to get sick, but the long term was an immune system that built up to fight all the crap that goes around and basically we were healthy kids.
The other story; I was speaking to a Mom of three young ones yesterday at Yoga. She was telling me about her neighbor who took her healthy young kids to get the shot. That evening, her 7 year old daughter got a high fever and passed out on the kitchen floor. They rushed her to the hospital where she remained in a coma. The mom came down very ill while at hospital with the child and was taken to Foothills. This was all on Wednesday.
There's both sides. So, who do I believe? I think this shot is a crap shoot at best. I'll take the wait (out the lineups) and see approach. As I do recieve a regular flu shot every year in November anyways, I'll hope to stay healthy till then and see what the masses are saying at that point.

I hope they are on the mend very soon.

| are you getting the shot? Posted: 10/31/2009 7:22:06 PM | | I am sorry to anyone I offended by referring to our Health Minister's education. At the time I wrote it I thought of writing a qualifying comment and now regret that I did not do so then! He has NO credibility in his position and typically has a portfolio where it would appear that "ignorance is bliss"!!! | |

Your Yoga friend with the sick child
She was pretty shaken by it. She told me the little girl was her daughters best friend and more like an actual daughter to her than a neighborhood kidlet.
I hope they are on the mend very soon
My sentiments exactly, and they were expressed.

I must ask...I've given serious thought to taking Yoga..and wanted to know what you thought about it?
For me, I'm a new man from a year ago. I was in pretty rough shape both physically and emotionally. I have a friend who was facing the prospect of losing two limbs due to poor circulation from Diabities. He started doing regular yoga a couple of years ago and is now swimming 50 laps a day at the pool. His limbs are healthy. He suggested I get into yoga to help deal with the "Physical" and hopefully the "Emotional" will follow. It has.
I'm doing a Yoga that originated in South Korea. I was checking out Yoga on the internet and came across "H.S.P." ; ("Health, Smile, Peace") I went in with an open mind (left macho at the door) and checked it out, liked the introduction and bought a 3 month membership. I'm now into my 9th month, and can honestly say it has been the best thing I ever could have done for my health, considering where I was at less than a year ago. You can google "Dahn Yoga" and read all about it.
BTW.... I've never tried any other kind of yoga, so I'm no expert in the field. My buddy did one of the regular kind of yogas and is also doing very well as a result. Only positive things to say I guess.
