If someone can dance irrespective of their gender then how does it look wrong?
Would someone go and see a ballet production and expect there to be only women dancers?
I think some people are confusing men not being able to dance with tradition and that's entirely different.

In times gone by men would have had the piss ripped out of them for considering a career as a dancer, that doesn't mean that men can't dance.

but in the outside world man-dancing is wrong

In your opinion may be...

if it looks wrong then it has to be wrong

It might look wrong if you have no rhythm or coordination, but that goes for both genders. Just because it looks wrong doesn't mean it is wrong... I see many people (both genders) in social functions that dance and are enjoying themselves

but the rest of us should just accept the fact that men can't dance

Really? What about Justin Timberlake? Michael Jackson? Usher? Brendon Cole (and other Strictly male dancers? Fred Astaire? Gene Kelly? Bob Hope? Bing Crosby? Patrick Swayze? John Travolta? Etc, etc

The evidence is slowing starting to stack up against you

Dancing has other advantages too:

"Women are right to go for men who are good dancers - as they are more likely to produce healthy offspring, a study shows"

edit; peter crouch and the robot dance is the only acceptable exception to the rule !

My Uncle and my Father taught me to dance Ballroom, I loved it, we used to go to quite a few Lady's Nights, and everyone could dance, properly in those days, nowadays it seems to be only the young men that dance or those over 40..

my goodness sometimes we even brushed against each other,

Was that not how we knew if a guy was seriously interested ..

get practicing lads a good dancer is always in demand.

Maybe that's why my son got so many prom invites !

in light of this overwhelming evidence of 11 men, most of whom are dead, in a world of 6.8 billion people i may have to have a rethink on my view that men can't dance !!

Like Gordie Colin, I also got into dancing in the 70's. I noticed it was the guys in the clubs who could dance that got the girls, and spent alot of time, most evenings infact, practicing moves ready for my weekend clubbing sessions.
In the end about 5 of us used to go round each others houses to practice, and was out 6 nights a week at clubs, and it paid dividends when we went clubbing. Although as we were into dancing quite seriously girls became a nuisance as they wanted to dance with us and use the floor-space which we wanted (yes we were showing off like peacocks) but they did chase us at the end of the night. I continued practicing with mates right through to the early eighties.

The dance skills I learnt in my teens and 20's have stayed with me up to a point, and helped me socially to great effect during my early 30's when I divorced and went back clubbing. I, it seemed was like a breath of fresh air compared to a mojority of 30+ males who frequented the widows hop nights. They basically had the rythmic skills and dancing abilities of a garden shed. I on the otherhand could move and also had good stamina, maintaining a good pace on the dancefloor for upto an hour at a time (also did aerobics and weights at the time), which got me the attention of a fair number of females.

Currently whilst I have lost alot of my stamina and am not as supple as I used to be, I can still dance reaqsonable well and am very lite on my feet to many peoples suprise, as I am 50 and around 17.5 stone.

Dancing for me has meant and still means that I can enjoy myself, I have a social skill. it gives me somewhere other than up at the bar to chat up women and has also attracted women to me.

So fella.... NO it's definitely not a poffy pass-time... it's a good way to meet new friends or partners, keep fit and enjoy yourself.

I've tried a bit sadly most of the ladies were old enough to be me gran. was fun though even though Jive does not fit with really liking Megadeth. Went to local pub where some of my classmates were jiving to Black Sabbath's Paranoid. - Chunt right mind. D' Vorest be a wild place!

Just need confidence to not worry about looking silly and laugh in the face of those with inane predjudices of those who try. Drink can help but not too much now!

Strictly come dancing ROCKS. The latin are my favourites.

I can understand why there is this view that men who can dance are poofs. The make up, the clothes etc. For me I find a man who can dance to be very sexy. If they show rhythm on the dance floor, I'm hoping they have good rhythm in other areas of their lives

As someone has said, some of the professional dancers are like peac0cks..showing themselves off. As for Brendan Cole....way to arrogant for my likeing but I still enjoy watching him dance.

Yep, that' my programme on Saturday night and nothing comes between that!

I love judges' comments - especially Bruno's passionate ones (I do miss Arlene Philips though) and when it comes to men who can dance - that's a pleasure to watch thinking what a mover ~ what a groover ~ what a .... he could be

I trained as a professional dancer (about a million years ago) until I had to give up due to an injury and the stupid flipping NHS not detecting it soon enough (thanks a bunch!).

At my college (which actually was like the school in Fame) I would say that out of about 200 guys possibly only half of them were gay. To this day I find it really sexy if a man can dance, especially if he's good with his hips...means he'll probably be good at other things too

Mm men in tights - nice. I must admit to sniggering a bit when I see men doing ballet and prancing around like fairies but that doesnt mean they arent talented and the more cultured amongst us can probably see that.

I thought that ray quinn (was that his name) was the most amazing dancer considering he'd never done that kind of thing before and deserved to win.

There are many forms of dance so to sweepingly say it is all a bit camp and effeminate is far too general.

I trained as a dancer and never found anything gay about blokes dancing.

Also, when on a night out, there is nothing worse than the bloke who is glued to the bar nursing his pint and won't even attempt a go on the dance floor. I adore dancing and love dancing with men, I'd much rather you gave it a go than acted like a ig old boring wet fish standing on the sidelines. It's a release, a way to let off steam and enjoy music.

I can also attest to Geordie Colins moves, we've shared a dancefloor

vwulme.

.

I agree entirely with the above statement. I have recently run a campaign from my local village hall aimed at bringing back the slow dances at the end of the night. The campaigns imaginative title is " Return of the erection section". The idea is to get the DJ to play some smoochy tracks for the last 20 minutes of the night, to bring people together. I have fond memories of lustful gropes on the dancefloor whilst in a drunken stupor. Happy days indeed.

The " tough guys don't dance " school of thought is not conducive to engaging the opposite sex in my experience. The type of actvities deemed " poofy " are often the most productive for meeting ladies. I did a seven year course in beauty therapy at college much to my friends amusement. Whilst they were surrounded by hairy arsed geezers in boiler suits on plumbing and engineering courses. I was the only male in a class of 93 nubile young bimbo's. Not only that, but I'm now a fully trained nail technician earning upwards of £4.65 an hour .

Well I have two left feet like most people but I love to dance at a club. I used to ballroom with my last wife and although I stomped around with very little elegance, I still knew all the steps and moves. Some dances are just too feminine for my liking but there are some great dances for guys.....Jive, cha cha, Rhumba, Samba.
Its all good fun and using a few dance steps in a club to modern music can gain alot of attention...of the right sort

Dancing is girly, effeminate, poofy?

Well, I seem to remember years ago on "Jim'll Fix It", when one boy who was on commented on that attitude, as he had been dancing for some time. He pointed out one very important thing;

"I get to hold a lot of pretty girls in my arms..."

haha!

Yeah. True.

Dancing with your partner adds a new dimension to your relationship, its something fun to do, it gets you outside together and is relatively cheap because you won't be buying loads and loads of drinks.

You meet new people and get the chance to join new social circles.
