Have you tried kickboxing classes yet ? They are a blast and burn tons of calories , get you fit and teach you self defense moves .
Unlikely that the classes you are going to are a practical kick boxing class. Athletic inducing, yes. Practical for self defense? No. Unless for the first year, you were coming home in pain because your shins are so beat up....

| Boxing... Posted: 10/8/2009 8:14:30 AM | | ineffable you seem to be so negative. If it isn't in a MMA facility you seem to think they are fake classes. | |
|
| Boxing... Posted: 10/8/2009 6:09:50 PM | | the funny thing about that is that most MMA gyms have very few instructors who actually hold Black Belts or who have ever had any real Boxing or Kickboxing matches,,,,,maybe some in Jiu Jitsu but most have a little Muy Thai and Basic Boxing for stand up, most tend to be Wrestlers who turned to MMA after their wrestling career ended{not WWE but Collegiate} lol,,,,He is right though Tae Bo and the likes are very bad for people to learn as they do not teach proper technique and are concerned with only the Aerobic aspects of the work out.... | |

| Boxing... Posted: 10/8/2009 8:01:04 PM | | I think its good that you are trying, thats the most important part, and that you enjoy your self... we have ideas of what we think is right! but you know what is right for you! once you have tried a few classes and may be a few years from now you willl try some another class, but the greatess thing is that you are doing.. and not talking about it! I am proud of hearing another person out there, doing, it doesn't sound like you will get caught up in the negative stuff, enjoy each day, like it was your last and it will be great! active is actractive! | |
|
| Boxing... Posted: 10/8/2009 8:37:48 PM | | Thanks! I don't get too caught up. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and that's just the way life is! Thanks for the support and kind words. | |
|
| Boxing... Posted: 10/9/2009 2:39:14 PM | | The training is from a martial arts instructor . And no self defense ? You might want to ask the guy that I landed a pretty good double side kick to his jaw ...kinda surprised him too . | |
|
| Boxing... Posted: 10/10/2009 7:27:58 AM | | Double side kick? man he must be slow as heck...lol Round kick I could see but sidekick thats awesome.... | |

Maybe, but women usually have the element of surprise on their side.
If it were more of a self-defense oriented class, they'd be teaching you not to kick above the waist, or to use head kicks strictly as a finishing technique. Low kicks are much harder to trap, block, or evade. A good side kick to the side of the knee will close any self-defense situation pronto.

I'm not negative and I don't think they are fake!
I just want people to be wary -- there are a LOT of 'bad gyms' out there that promise the deadly-five-fingered-death-touch-of-doom. For only $500, you too can learn it's deadly mysterious secret!
When choosing a martial art, you have to be wary of it's short comings -- and they ALL have them. For instance, MMA -- great for one on one fighting in a controlled environment, one of the more practical ways to train. Shit in a gun fight.

Yes -- exactly. With UFC exploding, I'm afraid (more and more) "UFC" gyms will really start cropping up teaching awful awful technique. There's actually a youtube video out there that is hilarious to watch. It's a gym 'coach' showing how to break a guard by basically sticking yourself in a triangle.

| Boxing... Posted: 10/13/2009 5:48:39 PM | I wanted everyone to know that I can now do more than I ever expected. Hitting the bag hard is one of my favorite things. Someone told me today that getting weight loss surgery is a cop-out way of losing weight. I responded the surgery didn't make me lose weight my tenacity and hard work did.
Plus I thought of her face when I hit tonight. Is that bad?
|
| Boxing... Posted: 10/13/2009 9:32:28 PM | You really shouldnt hit the bag hard unless you tape your wrists or at least wrap your hands really well.....fun to Knock the crap out of it isnt it?....its even more fun to kick it,,,, | |
|
| Boxing... Posted: 10/14/2009 6:21:29 AM | | Yeah have to wrap the hands; I use Mexican wraps. But it is a lot of fun! I gotta say its the most exciting exercise I've ever done! | |
|
| Boxing... Posted: 10/14/2009 7:10:23 PM | Mexican wraps...excellent! You must have a decent boxing instructor if he told you to get those.
btw, I'd also advise against wearing overly heavy (16oz) gloves for bag work...better would be either lighter 8-10oz gloves or better yet, bag gloves. Less padding = more immediate biofeedback if your form gets sloppy, so this keeps you honest. Also you'll get a closer approximation of what a real punch against a hard object feels like.

... and you're looking amazing in that profile pic.... is it a new one? Go girl you're doing great! x

| Boxing... Posted: 11/19/2009 12:00:42 PM | Thank you :) Well I'm actually down 133 lbs now and lost another 6.5 inches for 73 lost so far. I worked out so hard this week that my body is telling me to take some time off since I am having muscle pain in my back and totally rocked my abs this week. But giving myself a treat to get a massage tomorrow.
Its funny I noticed that the really buffed and in shape people who are in the class really aren't that in shape. They have to stop more than I do. Sometimes I think that "in shape" isn't really just muscle structure; it is also cardiovascular. Am I the only one who notices that sometimes really muscular people aren't really completely in shape?

know the video of which you speak and it is pretty funny
imo, good practical self defence is not the same as many of the martial arts that are trained out there, they all have too many "rules" that you would never follow when your life was in danger
i would suggest something built from japanese jiu jitsu, or look to ones built soley for self defence like krav maga
