I got a horrible little dog disguised as a cute, fluffy little puppy... Of course I got attached to the baby version and couldn't give him up ... Turned out to be a major shedder, dumb, stubborn and evil. Had a hernia and an undescended gonad, too. Thousands of dollars, 3,000 swiffers, countless vacuum cleaner bags and lint rollers, and many frozen fingers from subzero walks later...he's still here. And the BF who gave him to me and said he'd be around to help? Three guesses.

While we're at it - why not 'fess up to the worst gift you ever GAVE ?! Here's mine: A long-distance BF had raved over a meal I made for him before he moved away. Things were falling apart and the romance was gone....So, I sent him a Honey-Baked ham for his birthday (among other things). It went over like a lead... umm... ham? LOL!

I used to work a lot overseas and spent many birthdays in China. My friends knew I was a bit of a history buff, so for my birthday I was given Mao's little red book, a Red Army flag and a whole other bunch of genocide memorabilia. I didn't look at them as inappropriate at the time, but in hindsight...

Hmmm ...............come to think about it
I never received those vouchers for the Pedicure and
the Brazillian from Hilly so MUST presume she used them
herself - Bugger!

Unless she's saving them for my 50th Birthday in March......

Absolutely not...I still have them though they have passed their expiry date (not sure why they even have one).

Never fear.....I will change the date with a black texta and see how ya go!

Well Hilly, I was having this conversation with someone in a shop just a few days ago. Once the vouchers have been purchased then they have to honour them as the money for service has been paid. So they either have to give the service or the money back, simple. I think the expiry is so you will come in a certain period of time but they can't enforce it. I have discovered a few interesting consumer laws lately. Maybe we'll start a thread on THAT one day. (Might be interesting after Christmas with all those unwanted gifts!)

This thread could have another 3 months in it yet. Anybody need a Dartboard and cabinet?

I'll be interested in the ol' "you break, you pay" tagalong.. {yes, I got nabbed recently}

Worst gift received??? hmmm, the list is long and boring.. {pretty much like the list of ex's too}

Worst given?? I'll admit to being a shocker at giving gifts, no imagination and one time discovered I had at the last moment wrapped a photograph album for my live in of one year, and he had bought for me, earrings and neckchain.

So was that before or after you realised you had left some of your photos IN the photo album?

I reckon the "you break you pay" is a great scam by the shops to double dip. All of them would have manditory Public Liability insurance and Accidental Breakage along with fire, theft and building. They get the money from you AND then claim it either on insurance or write it off against tax. By virtue of the shop being open you are "invited in". If you happen to knock something down and break it I personally would then maintain the stock was stored in "an unsafe manner" and threaten to sue rather than pay for it. Did you take home the item you broke?

Now we could do pages on those worthless "Extended Warranties".

My sister once bought a lesbian friend a box of penis shaped pasta. I think she found it for sale at one of those $2 shops. Obviously not a best seller.

Perhaps when it comes to puting c*** in mouth, most people won't settle for anything but the real thing.

^^^^^^^^That is seriously hysterical

I was given a Bryan McFadden CD a couple of years ago for my birthday from a girlfriend who loves him.

Thanks alot friend....................I don't like him, I've never liked him and I will most definitely never like him in the future so the gift has appropriately been stashed in a bottom drawer, left to gather dust, never to be found again...................

Am I drawing the wrong conclusion here?

Okay the absolute worst for my ex and the most inappropriate gift for me was...going out on my bday, gambling at the casino and losing, gambling with contraception and losing. What a bday present...my first son. har har and he the most like me and the most difficult to manage. I should have thrown away the contents and just played with the cardboard box.

I've ever received after being told I was
infertile by my GP & confirmed by my Gyno...
it's a gift that keeps on giving - he is my heart & soul &

What's the worst or most inappropriate gift you ever received?

well...I never really received many gifts....from family...growing up..
so I remember most of them...
I remember my dad coming through the lift doors at the airport from veitnam...
not sure if it was his first tour or his 2nd.... I remember the smell from that army/canvas bag.. the boots etc...
He bought me a beautiful.. gold jewellry box.. .. jewels on top.. and when you opened it a ballerina/music..
IT became the most precious thing in the world to me.. cause' me 'dad was finally home.. and he gave it too me..I was probably 3? 4? dunno...
I kept it until.. my 20s when it and all my other childhood stuff was burnt..

The 2nd gift// was a tape recorder.. ohh fuk yes im veryyyyyyyyyyyyy old...
I was ecastic.. I asked for it... sighs happily..... I love music and 2 tapes...

The 3rd gift he ever gave me... (parents broken up..so never saw him ever he just left... ).. so he came for a visit...(which was very uncomfy.. cause the parents had'nt resolved '..nor seen each other for awhile... he was like a stranger..(but was happy to see him)
He put 2 presents under a tree..crissy time.... brother got a ball. was fooking obvious ..although wrapped..
I felt my wrapped present up... like a blind person..feeling every bit.. to determine what it was....
ohh dear.. ... I tried to hide my disappointment.. and went to the kitchen where my mum was.. I cried.. and said...'mum.. he got me a sewing basket.. ( I was a tomboy)....
that mean's dad dose'nt know me.. if he knew me.. he would know I hate sewing...
She said.. .. basically... he dosen't know.. its the thought that counts.. I said I know it is.. but he dose'nt know me...
she said she would use it.. so not to worry.. so I dried my eyes.. and went to spend time with him........
never really saw him after that...well a couple times... and he never ever gave me a present again..
When I was in late 20's... I heard you teach people how to treat you.... so..
as my dad never sent a bday card.. or called etc... I decided Id send him a bday card with $50 in it... I wrote.. take your wife out.. (his 2nd wife).. for a nice dinner etc..
Well. It did'nt teach him.. a bday card... would be nice...to be thought of etc..cause he still never sent one..

My mum used the sewing basket... so all growing up I saw it......( I guess i was like 10)
well.. .. I used to use my mums garbo bin... cause I lived in the bush...
One day I opened it.. and on top... with cardboard etc.. was that sewing basket...
I couldn't let it get dumped.. so I took it out.. it was'nt dirty or anything and started using it... as my sewing basket.. (get over the wheelie bin thing.. it was'nt dirty)...
finally.. I sewed and finally.. I used it...
30 years later..
so the worst.. inappropriate gift... finally got acknowledged..
yes im a sentimental sap...... yes the thought..knowing in gift buying means more to me than the gift...
I learn't as a child how much a gift could mean..... I learn't to listen... to what someone wants/says.. during the year.. to what they say they would like../need...
and I bought those things..
now?
I don't buy anything ..unless it means something..
Id love to see capitalistchristmas.. ... of waste and guilt.. and disaapointment.......
just for one year be devoted to the earth... where nooone bought materilist shit.. but gave the the earth a thoughtful crissy... something... instead.. like plant a tree...
plant some herbs...
by not buying crap.. people detest/reject.. we would save alot of energy...
one commercial/materialistic free day.. would make a difference..
ok.. I must be ovulating Im sentimental..
BUt I will say this... my experiences with an absent dad.....
I tell every dad that tells.. me they can't see their kids... no access.. mother moved away etc..
send ya bloody kid a card.. let them know... you think of them..
most replies? ..oh the mother would'nt give it to them..... ok cop out..
if thats the case.. write on a card on their bday.. and keep it.. cause.. 1 day your kid is gunna want to know who you are...... if not for curiosity.. where did I come from.. at the least..
don't expect your kid.. to .. just think your great...
make an effort.. cause allllllllllll those years you missed out.. well they missed you more... cause they were kids.....
if at the very least you can hand em a stack of cards.. they can feel
with dignity.. not dellusion.. like you really must of thought of em.. cared for them.. and only cause of circumstances.. you are strangers...
otherwise... where you been?
have some guuts.. sendya kids a card.. a pressie..

on a good note.. nooone reads my posts.. cause they are soooooo long.
so I get to vent.. invisably..
peace

Nup, you missed out this time... for I read every danged word... knowing right where you were coming from... only I was an unwanted child by my father..... so knew no gifts or attention at all from him.

I don't do "silly season" either... have fundamentally developed the opinion that it's all a bunch of Bull, the hypocritical crap of comptetition, materialism and backstabbing... and that's just on the day... the people who are the cruelest and meanest to you throughout the year, figuring that because of one day of 'goodness' gestures that all is forgiven... Children raised on the hype of the 'bigger the better' the gift... and the sense of entitlement rather than hope.

I prefer to give my gifts of gentleness, kindness and attention throughout the year... instead of collecting for a BS grand deal that only sets a great majority of people into a fiscal frenzy.

I do however, save New Year's Day.. had to choose one 'calendar' day for celebrating... opening with a feast and something 'small' as a gesture of 'newness'... that is, after spending December eliminating clutter and S H ! T {Surplus Harboring Incidious Tendencies}

only I was an unwanted child by my father..... so knew no gifts or attention at all from him.

Well, that certainly hurts.... .............I'm not sure adults actually realise.. that once they become a parent.... there is a part in the child just for them.... so they might walk away.. .. or be too selfish.. to never acknowledge the part in themselves.. knowing their child is out there..... but regardless the hurt will remain...
so ie.. even if someone donates sperm.. that becomes a child...... that child will have a void/gap.... (well consistently... from my studies)........ to want to know them...

This is why I really think children's rights.. before conception .. are needed..

I don't like to call parents names... ..like when a mum.. says your fathers a **stard etc.. because he is part of the child..(DNA).. so in effect they are putting the child down...

YOU don't deserve to be put down.... But I'll say this your fathers choices.. from the sound of it.. was'nt about you.. nor based on you.....
It sounds like it was about the concept of a baby.....
It sounds like he dose'nt even know you.... and that is his loss..

Just wish parents realised their absence.. (even if they think they are hurt.. themselves.. and don't contact their kids... .. ).. Will impact the child forever....
and their hurt.. the adult. .. is nowhere near what the childs hurt is....
the adult needs to step up.. and show some courage/.character...
(disclaimer.. I'm not ovulating,......it's pms.. but I forgot..)

Akizzej... The only major thing I know about you.. is your taking a break from uni....
so my gift to you.. would be.......in thought.. ...
enjoy your less stressful.. time...(not having to meet deadlines)... and...
I hope you pamper you a bit more....and now you will have more time for forums....
ha ha ha..
peace/hugz

Inappropriate gifts... hmmmm........are the ones ......that when....anyone feels obligated to give a gift.....
therefore... .. its not from the heart/thought... just a useless .. obligsated gesture.. causing more landfill... buy em a tree.. you can even get balcony little lemon trees..

Gotta agree with those saying they aren't fans of the commercialism and obligation and ...yes Akizzej ...a sense of entitlement...(hell lately I've been noticing more and more that at the bottom of so many of the problems of humanity is a misplaced sense of entitlement that causes us to get it so wrong so much of the time, but I digress)...of Christmas etc. But you have to dodge the accusations of being all bah! humbug! when you try to fly in the face of the cult of Christmas/Valentines/nominated days. Personally I don't think a preference to give based on the heart rather than the calendar is bah! humbug! at all. My calendar only tells me when I have to go train a class, and when the next water delivery is coming... not how to feel. I don't give it that much power...although it does have nice rural pictures that make me feel like going outside.

so I get to vent.. invisably..

Hey Soulmate. Your words are a gift a lot of people love unwrapping. I got something for you too. Admiration...which has already been delivered although you might not have noticed its arrival.

Soulmate08, I really appreciate the kind words... I should note that I didn't elaborate entirely in my last post {for want of thinking it wasn't necessary}.. my father didn't want me, or for that matter, any of we children. Our mother conceived us (in wedlock) under some misguided impression that he would come to love us and that the children of the marriage would encourage their marriage to succeed. {Yes, can you say major dysfunciton?? lol}

Evidently the marriage did not survive.

My mother always put my father down... living with that over the years I promised I would never do that to my own child's father... and to this day he is addressed as "Mr M***, your father... " and I simply acknowledge the fact that he is my son's father... without any derogitory remarks.

If there was any gift giving as a result of this, it was that my parents gave me the gift of tenacity {some dare call it stubborness}... throughout my life, of all the obstacles and the putdowns, the difficulties, traumas and the setbacks... yet out of it I survived and while I'm not in the 'elitist' bunch {I mean, I drive a '94 Camry for gawds sake}, I can walk the street and hold my head proud that I've done alright by myself {and my son}. I have the determination to take on a project and see it to the best of my ability, or to recognise when it's all going to pot and to extract myself with minimum of fuss.

So inspite of not seeing him, or knowing him, my father gave me a greater gift, to survive. {and no, he'll never have an opportunity to see it, as he passed away from diabetes complications two years ago}

Meanwhile.. I just found out what everybody is getting for "new years"... my university is having a 'clearout' of misembroidered polo shirts {and they are in sizes that even fit ME!!} So what if I studied Preventive Health and they have the extra words "biomedical science" instead... it's close, right????
