You didn't just suggest that he moves.

Yes I did......see...

Sorry, but I really have no useful advice except move
.

and that they are wrong.

I gave my opinion....if I stated somewhere that others were "wrong"...please point it out to me. I said I was gobsmacked by responses but did not say others were wrong, I dont believe my post even mentioned the word "wrong"....

Yours did though...it also mentioned killing them all...which mine did not.

Ahh...roadtrippers are such fun sometimes...birds of a feather me thinks.

Done here.....

The latter, beyond perception, would actually try and help by making the parties in question self sufficient, active members of the community, possibly happier and (mentally and physically) healthier. They would also quickly loose their 'burden on society' status in the action of carrying their own weight (which could be the cause of their mental state in the first place).
The former (generalizing of course) would be happy letting them live the rest of their lives as hermits on the dole and be considered being nice to people. The latter at first view would only be concerned about their hard works' earnings going to those that should be providing for themselves. However in actuality they want to make a difference for the good of all, primarily the inflicted.
I applaud the OP for being one of the latter.
As far as a solution you may already be doing all you can from showing by example.

Thanks mate, got it in one. This is pretty much what I figured. At least until I can afford that writers retreat in the mountains

Cheers.

If these tenants are not creating problems apart from upsetting you for living where they live then you have a major problem, OP.

There could be a mirade of reasons for them not working but because they aren't working what do you care as long as you pay your rent then their rent payments are the concerns of the landlord.

I also didn't have a great childhood Vanahiem, me I wasn't homeless but I was used as a punching bag and now as a parent I don't abuse my kids, in fact I can only ever remember smacking a child once and that hurt me more than it did them.

But my upbringing has as much to do with your neighbours as to your upbringing as the reasons behind you being homeless have very little to do as to why these tenants are suffering from mental illness.

The world is populated with imperfect people.

Unfortunately in australia a lot of people think that if a person is not totally self sufficient then they don't deserve respect. It doesn't have to be about self sufficiency, it can be about integrating into society better and allow them to feel better about themselves. It doesn't help that people label them as dole bludgers or that they are useless and it doesn't help to call them weird. It makes it harder for them to integrate into society as they know people look down on them. They shouldn't be seen as second class citizens because they aren't self sufficient.

what was the landlord to do?.. he had empty rooms and bills to pay....

he obviously thought these blokes might be good tenants.... regular income and probably recommended by an agency of some sort... maybe even getting a premium for housing them...

how long could he afford to keep the rooms empty for a more "upmarket" tenant..?

he couldn't very well ask Van to cover the rent difference until mutually suitable people came along .. could he?..
even knowing the landlord well and getting along with him OK doesn't always mean he will include you in discussions about who he should let his rooms out to... or who he shouldn't....

maybe in a "perfect" world he may have thought to ask your thoughts... and considered how the new tenants might impact on your space...
I don't think we're there yet, are we?....

OP-Easy fix.In the middle of the night when everyone is sleeping.Get their garden hose and turn it on and put it in their roof.By the morning their roof will have collapsed and they will have no option but to move elsewhere.
