| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/26/2009 7:06:54 AM | I watched The Secret and enjoyed it, found it quite uplifting. As some have already mentioned, it's not really a revelation...the idea that how we think and what we focus upon are what eventually come into our lives is not a new concept. But a great many people don't believe in it; many believe that things just come to us, or just happen to us randomly, and we have nothing to do with how or why. I tend to believe in the former. The idea that The Secret teaches can also be a bit complex to grasp, though...someone who continually think about having the car of their dreams, for instance, will of course state that 'the law of attraction' is fantasy, simply because despite all of their hard focusing, that car still failed to materialize. Yet there is a fine line between constantly thinking about having this particular car, and accepting that you will have that car - someone who constantly has that car on their mind often also has a sub-set mode of thinking that they might not even be aware of; that of 'I want that car...I want that car...it's too expensive...it's out of my range...I want that car'. It's important to acknowledge that the car will come into your life, but at the same time to let go of the negative aspects of why you don't yet have it. The 'it's too expensive...it's out of my range' thoughts can be there without one even realizing it. Acceptance, and acting in ways that reinforce the positive thoughts, as well as not obsessing about it - which can reinforce negative thoughts - are all key (imo).
One other thing about The Secret I'll mention (after having cited an example of wanting a car ): the movie does focus a fair bit on material possession. However, it seems that many who watched it saw only that...they didn't notice that the message itself was not just about having material possessions; yes, it was about creating the life that you want to create, which could possibly include a great car, a great house, etc. But it is more about changing mindsets, about focusing upon the positive in your life, learning why some negative things, events, people are drawn to you, and how to change that negative mindset in order to attract more positive people and events. It is about sculpting and creating how you want to live.
However, I also found that The Secret didn't touch upon something I do tend to believe; that while we can, and do, control our own lives, some things will happen that are 'out of our control', such as the death of a loved one, or contracting a certain disease. Some things (I believe) come to us for a greater purpose, so we can learn while walking our path, or so we can teach others. For example, losing a child has to be one of the most profoundly agonizing things that could happen to someone; yet with it comes opportunity. We can choose to live the rest of our lives in grief over the loss, or we can take away valuable tools and lessons from our pain, and use it to help others. I think life is much more complex than we realize, yet at the same time it's incredibly simple. And when it is all going well we embrace it, yet when bad things happen, we don't understand why...and we go through anger, grief, fear, etc. But if we can teach ourselves to live our lives with positive thinking, then when something painful or difficult does happen, we are much better equipped to get through it, and to understand why it happened, rather than to become enveloped in pain and negativity. The Secret is simply a rough guide to teach us that we can control how we choose to live, and in living positively, we will draw to us a great many positive things...and carrying that positive mindset will make any difficult times that much easier to get through.

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/26/2009 7:56:12 AM | People eat this kind of thing up because they want tons of money, and want to believe that they'll be rich someday. While I do believe that we have a certain amount of power and ability, much is determined by where we live, our parents, our social circle, etc. Sometimes the self help books get people all worked up and then disappointed when things don't work out. I'm not a fatalist, but there is much in life that is beyond our control, as others have mentioned.
I knew a lady once who was always reading self help books, and she was the biggest basket case in town. Insane drama in her life. She got pregnant and wasn't even sure who the father was. She laid this info on me, and through tears cried, "I don't feel like an ageless and timeless being!" You can laugh but it wasn't funny at all. She tried her best to be "positive" all the time, but it never seemed to work out for her. And she really was a very sweet and kindhearted person.
I wish it were as easy as just having "happy thoughts." Nothing wrong with happy thoughts, but....there are sh**heads out there and you will still have to deal with them no matter how good you are.

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/26/2009 9:34:36 AM | I love this topic! I have read (and watched) the Secret and watched What the Bleep Do We Know? Both are awesome. I especially love the piece that shows how the structure of water molecules is effected by words. Scientific demonstrations of the effect of thoughts/words on the tangible visible world .
I learned a long time ago that what you focus on grows. That works in negative and positive terms. I try to remember to focus directly on what I hope to be, achieve and attract. The hard part is understanding that my subconscious mind doesn't understand when I am thinking "not" this and "not" that, it is still focused on the this or that.. the object of my thoughts is what I will be attracting. (I don't profess to be perfect, just a work in progress.)
To the nay sayers: The Bible says something to the effect of "All things work to the good for those who love the Lord." In my opinion this doesn't mean that everything in life is going to go the way you want it to. What it means to me is that you should be looking at the bigger picture and trusting that a loving God/Spirit will take even the "negative" things and give them purpose in your life. If we can maintain an attitude of gratitude, there is ALWAYS something wonderous in our lives. Lets not spend much of our time and energy in fear, worry, anger etc. It is simply time lost.

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/26/2009 9:49:37 AM | Generally, it's a load of crap.
Good things happen to bad people every day and vice versa despite what frame of mind they were in.
I think it's naive to think the universe is shaping itself around our thoughts blah blah blah. If you haven't noticed there are 6 billion people in the world trying to get the universe to work in their favour too. In the end of the day, the only way things will work out in your favour are through motivated and persistent effort.
Here is the basic formula for success: 1) Find out what it is you want to accomplish. 2) Find out what you require to reach that goal. 3) Put down the self-help book. 4) Get up off your ass and start getting things done. Upgrade education, volunteer, make new contacts, etc.
I would argue that it's not the ability to think positively that leads to success; it is the ability to act immediately that is the ultimate factor of success and happiness. Positive thinking is a bi product of being busy and productive. Conversely, being busy and productive is NOT a bi product of positive thinking.
STOP THINKING AND START DOING!!!

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/26/2009 3:12:03 PM | Since reading this book and watching that movie, which can be downloaded on the internet, I have been in an extremely good mood. Finally to feel I have some control over things around me. And to feel as if I can influence my daily life in a good way simply by directly my thinking and what I allow into my perception.
If nothing else, it is a guaranteed way to stay more happy and optimistic. And that is alone is worth it.

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/26/2009 10:20:54 PM | There is another book that you might want to check out, and it's called "The Power Of Now." Tolle explains in detail how to cut through ego, which means cutting down on the thought chatter that pushes most people around all day. In other words, if you truly seek peace, the object is to stop thoughts altogether, as opposed to "thinking positive thoughts." Some might say that one is just as hard as the other, and that is probably true. However...in stopping thoughts you open up to the spirit and intuition, as opposed to trying to force your little will onto your surroundings. It's the difference between seeking God's will, (or "being" as Tolle would describe it) versus your wish fulfillment fantasies and the magical thinking of your ego demands. Tolle says that there is certainly nothing wrong with using your mind when you need to; the mind should be used as a tool.
The striking thing that he mentions is that most people are slaves to their minds and thought processes. The great example he gives is that of the crazy person who talks outloud to himself....but most of us are just as crazy because we do the same thing silently! We argue internally with people who are not in our presence. All of us have those crazy internal conversations all the time. It's draining, useless, and keeps us mired in ego.
This is really a great book if you happen to be ready for it.

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/27/2009 6:43:03 PM | | ^^^^ Why pick on me? Msg 30 said the same thing. This is shit everyone should know. You don't have to go out and buy a book or video about it. Get off the internet and get out into the real world and maybe good things will happen to you. | |

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/27/2009 7:05:16 PM | | Everyone thinks the same way, what differs is what we think about. You can't honestly expect that everyone is brought up with the same set of principles ingrained in their skulls about how to handle life. This book is a good first step for those who see the world through a lens of negativity or hopelessness, or simply for those who aren't sure how to get to their next step in life. | |

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/27/2009 11:54:58 PM | The Secret struck me as a rip off of several similar books which preceded it. There are so many books saying essentially the same thing; some way better than others. One book which helped me was 'You'll See It When You Believe It' by Wayne Dyer.
I practiced this stuff (which I call "willful optimism") and got good results. These concepts get misrepresented as a sales pitch for getting what you want just by the lazy magic of merely controlling your mind, which is of course sadly delusional.
We cannot prove or disprove the stuff about 'Thoughts always manifest tangibly.' or 'Thoughts have magnetic attraction powers to bring you what you think about.' That inability to prove or disprove it is irrelevant, IMO, because OTHER aspects of this material are obviously, undeniably beneficial and worthwhile.
The key is this:
1. If you anticipate you will get what you want, then you are much more willing to do what it takes to get it, even without any guarantee that all of your work and sacrifice will pay off the way you want it to do. So your thinking influences your mood, which influences your behavior, which raises your odds for getting what you want.
2. If you walk around imagining you have (or will soon have) the things you want most, then you walk around feeling happy, and being happy is the actual goal behind lots of more specific goals we all have, so that's one reward for practicing this discipline of restricting your anticipation exclusively to see the results you desire. Walking around in this happy state may also give you more energy to be more productive, and may make you more attractive to others for every kind of interaction or relationship.

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/28/2009 4:22:45 AM | The above are all based on long-held philosophies by various speakers.
Whether you think you can, or think you can't...you're right. This is the principle that the subconscious mind works toward that which the conscious mind focuses upon. Positive or negative.
Those who think only of the negatives and see the world around them in a negative light, no matter what they claim to want...inevitably only look for the bad in things and they miss the opportunities staring them in the face. Those who walk around expecting nothing but the positive, stumble across the same opportunities and take advantage of them. The negative people around them naturally begin to bash them, claiming it will never work. In a way, they're right - it won't work for THEM because their minds aren't prepared to make it work. They're pre-programmed for failure. So they can't understand when someone who is programmed for success and the positive, take up the same thing and succeed beyond their wildest dreams.
All you have to do is look at the world around you. Most people fail in business because they're told they will fail, so they go in believing that. A few succeed because they ignore the negative mindset and Labor Under Correct Knowledge...that's all "luck" is. L.U.C.K.
Looking for and expecting the negative in everything will soon overwhelm you and cause you to give up. Looking for the positives, or how unexpected changes can present new ways of doing things and new opportunitites leads to its own roadmap to achieving what you wanted.
No big mystery in any of it. Many folks think rich people are happy because they're rich and poor people are miserable because they're poor. In fact, it's usually the other way around...happy people are more likely to find the good and positives to take advantage of and they prosper by it. Miserable people will usually let all the opportunities slip past them as they continue to wallow in misery. Miserable people who come into lots of money usually end up losing it and becoming poor and miserable again. Look at all the lottery winners who lose it all again in a few years and are right back to misery again.
You just have to reset your point of view periodically to flush out all the negativity and start from a positive perspective again. A lot of older folks never do this and just get more miserable each passing year.

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/28/2009 6:07:05 AM | I can't recommend highly enough the movie What the Bleep Do We Know? Comments by respected physicists on how what we think of as "reality" and "the real world" exist only in our minds, or as we percieve it.
Taking apart atoms and molecules, in them there are particals at the tiniest levels flipping in and out of existence. And these particles don't touch each other. There is mostly just empty space. And in labs they have had the same particles in two places at once.
Question reality. It's not as it seems. How far down the rabbit hole do you want to go? Do you really think you know all about the real world, what your eyes tell you is out there? Or do you have an open questioning mind?

Excellent.
Everything about the Secret is just a door opener. They give you enough to get your started but there is so much more to the Law of Attraction and what you can actually control in your life. There is so much more out there that is just coming to light now, but the concepts and practices have been around for years.
Esther and Jerry Hicks have some great books out there about the law of attraction as well.
One thing to remember with this concept is that you CANNOT get yourself fixed on an outcome. One poster said that as much as they want to be with this ONE girl, they can think it all they want and it won't happen. Right..because it's not SUPPOSED to happen.
Now if you wanted to find a partner in life, then you think or write down what you want and wait for it to happen. Had you got with the one girl/guy that you wanted, you may have been selling yourself short for an even better relationship that is waiting for you.
The biggest thing about the Secret, and everyone got hung up on the material manifestation part, is about the physical aspect. Did anyone remember the woman that had cancer and then she went into remission? There are several books on how people manifest certain things in their physical body because of 'stress' aka overthinking and worrying. Louise Hay has a book about it.

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/28/2009 6:11:59 PM | We can only be dumbed down to the extent we allow ourselves to be...
On your next trip to the grocery store; grab your cart, but put your shopping list aside temporarily... Just observe...
Do that a couple of times; and you'll write your own book...
But I ain't gonna buy it...

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/29/2009 7:11:17 PM |
as much as they want to be with this ONE girl, they can think it all they want and it won't happen.
It wont happen because you are telling yourself it wont happen.
We create our own reality with our thoughts. If you think it won't happen it won't.
For this to work you have to totally 100% believe and trust that you are the creator of your own reality.
And as far as other people go, you have to allow them to do whatever they want, and accept whatever they do, and take the parts of their behavior you like, and ignore and not think about the parts of their behavior you don't like. If some particular person isn't with you, then the two of you have chosen that on some level.

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/30/2009 3:18:39 AM | Got that book a couple of years ago and have to admit was drawn in completely.
Made a long list of things to think about including getting a nice shiny black flat screen TV as a house warming present when I got the keys to my new home...
Everything on list I received but it wasn't from sitting on my hairy, white, fat one thinking about it, but through months of overtime and hardwork...
Only good that came from that book was making a list of goals to aim for.

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 9/30/2009 3:34:06 AM | | I seen the movie didn't really grip me... the whole law of attraction thing to me I didn't really believe in... but I guess it works for some...if this law of attraction thing worked I would have a house and million by now... | |

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 10/1/2009 9:51:00 PM | If this law of attraction works there is only one thing left for me to do...

| Law of Attraction, aka The Secret Posted: 10/15/2009 9:51:58 PM | That book doesn't divulge all that you really should know. It may give you generalisations, but there are 7 laws of Universal Attraction.. and you need to know how each one works, and how it will work for you. The ‘Law of Attraction’ states that whatever is broadcast out into the universe is joined by (or attracted to) energies that are of an equal frequency, resonance, or vibration. There are many ways to express the ‘Law of Attraction’: Where your attention goes, your energy flows. That which you think about expands. Like attracts like. That which is like unto itself is drawn. There are also a number of words that people, who don’t know about or understand this law, use to describe it. Like: Out-of-the-blue Synchronicity Serendipity Luck Meant to be Fell into place Fate Karma Coincidence | |
