| Favorite MMA fighter? Posted: 10/10/2009 7:24:09 PM | My last PPV event was watching Brock Lesnar lie on top of Frank Mir and hit him til the ref stepped in. It was an insulting, childish match. A HUGE steroid freak who lies on top of people and hits. Great skills, go Brock go.
I will NEVER waste a single dime on MMA events again. I tried to get into it, watched who I could and I really think its a sad sport.
With Befort and Machida now using good old Shotokan karate to blast their opponents away and GSP only fighting like once a year now, and Silva about to retire, for me, MMA is over. Its really a debasement of martial arts and a typical Western sicko interpretation of fighting arts at the moment. Note how NO competitor older than 35 does well. Randy Coutoure just gets beaten every match hes in. Theres no longevity in the sport its for 20 somethings.
I gave MMA a chance and it disappointed. Of course there will always be thousands of angry young men lining up to see bloodsport, but as for the "art" in MMA, its not there. But if you want to continue to pay 50 bucks to watch guys like Lesnar lie on top of other guys and pummel them more power to you. Its just pathetic. For every Cung Le, GSP and Silva, there are a thousand "ground and pound" specialists who are half trained, steroid infused goons. Its a sick sport which was a good idea some 10 years ago and has degenerated into a really depressing waste of time.

Yeah, I was just thinking, wouldn't that have been a match if they were both in their prime.
Tank Abbott vs. Kimbo Slice. Neither one of them is very technically sound, but they are both just straight up brawlers. That would've been a helluva slugfest.

| Favorite MMA fighter? Posted: 10/11/2009 8:13:02 AM | Fedor is the best in the world and fun to watch. The UFC looks suspect for not letting him fight for the heavyweight title without a long contract. Cung Le is my favorite fighter right now but back in the day it was Hoyce Gracie and then Randy Couture. | |
|
| Favorite MMA fighter? Posted: 10/11/2009 8:33:06 AM | | UFC bent over backwards for Fedor, offering him ridiculous money to sign and agreeing to almost every demand his management wanted. The sticking point was that Fedor's management wanted to co-promote with UFC, which is the one thing UFC aren't willing to do. And they knew that. | |
|
| Favorite MMA fighter? Posted: 10/11/2009 8:58:24 AM | | Yeah I know thats what Dana says its all about, and that he has his principles and that copromotion is not going to happen. That guy says all sorts of things that are suspect. Dana has been calling Fedor afraid to fight the best and questioning his actual ability and the quality of his opponents for years, out of fear that we find out the best fighter might not be in the UFC. Fedor is the best in the world , give him the copromotion that wants. Surely a money maker in the long run for UFC if Fedor cannot beat their best. Is their anything that Dana White or the UFC is not willing to do? come on now you drinking the kool-aid man. Dana White is afraid and he wants to wait until Fedor is no longer in his prime to bring him onboard. | |
|
| Favorite MMA fighter? Posted: 10/11/2009 11:34:27 AM | More like Dana's afraid to give Fedor everything he wants only to see him get upset in his first fight.
Even if Fedor were to win his first fight, which I would take to be the most likely scenario, agaisnt Lesnar no doubt, who the hell is he going to fight next? Couture? Nog? Mir? Cro Crop? Any other broken fighters and once were's I failed to mention? Or the many other second tier heavies?
The heavy weight division is incredibly shallow. The fact that Tim "Jens-Pulver-made-me-cry" Silvia once held the title, and Brock Lesnar now does pretty well says it all.
Yaaaawwwwnnnnnnn.
Clearly, Dana has a lot of work to do with the heavy weight division. Bringing in Fedor isn't going to fix things, and until it's fixed Fedor simply isn't worth what he thinks he's worth.
A one fight contract would be nice though ... just to watch Fedor decimate Lesnar.

Those are the facts of the negotiations; Fedor's management had a whole list of demands and UFC was willing to meet them all, including making Fedor their highest paid fighter by far. They're not going to co-promote because they have nothing to really gain. Yes, they'll get Fedor, but let's look at Fedor for a moment. Talent-wise, yes, he's been right up there with the best. But when was the last time Fedor fought someone who was talented enough and enough of a threat to where, after beating them, Fedor could be considered to have rightfully earned the title of the best heavyweight fighter in the world?
Arlovski? Not a top ten fighter, but he gave Fedor a fair bit of trouble until he decided to go Bruce Lee on Fedor and got himself knocked out thanks to his legendary glass chin.
Sylvia? For all his success, Sylvia is not a great fighter. Sylvia's success has come through his size and reach rather than actual ability. And when Fedor's management were talking with UFC a year or so ago, they outright said they didn't want Fedor to fight Sylvia.
Hong-Man Choi? Please.
Matt Lindland? At least two or three weight classes below Fedor and size matters at the top level.
Mark Hunt? Granite chin and hard hitter, but one-dimensional and not in Fedor's league.
Mark Coleman? Zuluzinho?
You have to go back almost four years to when Fedor fought Mirko Cro Cop to find the last opponent Fedor faced who was a danger to him and a real threat.
I'm not dismissing Fedor's talent, because he really is one of the most talented fighters around. But he hasn't faced a real challenge in so long that to call him the #1 fighter in the world is comical.

| Favorite MMA fighter? Posted: 10/11/2009 8:44:19 PM | Royce Gracie was by far my favorite fighter and I am shocked more people didn't appreciate what he did. I know he lost his last fight with Matt Hughes but he was almost forty and Hughes was unstoppable at that stage of his career. Gracie used to fight at 178 and have to win an eight man tournament with no weight classes, time limits, and virtually no rules in the beginning. What he did will never be duplicated. He beat Shamrock, Severn, Kimo, and everyone else except Hughes. He was unbelievable. Gracie made the UFC what it is today. I think if it wasn't for his style people like Tank Abbott(brawlers) would have molded the sport and it would have never been what it is today. | |

That guy says all sorts of things that are suspect. He's a promoter. That's his JOB.
Dana has been calling Fedor afraid to fight the best and questioning his actual ability and the quality of his opponents for years Rightfully so. Fedor hasn't fought any top talent in years.
out of fear that we find out the best fighter might not be in the UFC. UFC has, on average, the top talent in the world. I doubt they'll ever have 100% of the absolute best fighters, because some of those fighters (Fedor, Urijah Faber) are perfectly happy where they're at.
It's still Dana's job to tell us the UFC is the best (just like it's a Ford dealership's job to tell you how fantastic the F-150 is), and to downplay any fighter that's not in his promotion. This does two things: 1) Hurts the competition (good for his wallet) 2) Reminds fighters that the only way to prove they're the best, is to sign with the UFC and beat people up
give him the copromotion that wants Why? To put on a great fight? That's very narrow minded. Dana's job is to make the UFC money. The best way to do that is to make UFC the dominant promotion for MMA, and he's done that. Why would he legitimize another promotion that's nowhere near the earning power of the UFC? Why would he spend money on Fedor to help another promotion (read: competition) make money?
Dana White is afraid and he wants to wait until Fedor is no longer in his prime to bring him onboard. I doubt that. Exciting fights sell PPV. Paying someone a tun of cash to get beat up & retire them isn't a good return on investment.

| Favorite MMA fighter? Posted: 10/12/2009 4:37:22 PM | Currently, Brock Lesnar. I guess part of that would be because I was a big fan of his when he was in WWE years ago.
From the past, Ken Shamrock. Granted his last fights against Ortiz didn't make him look good, but the guy was on top of his game in his prime.

Zuffa, which is the parent company of the UFC. Already has Urijah Faber.
|
| Favorite MMA fighter? Posted: 10/12/2009 5:38:44 PM | | And unless UFC decides to absorb the WEC nobody outside of a very limited audience will have a clue who Urijah Faber is. As long as WEC is kept entirely separate, it doesn't really matter what a fighter does there because nobody really knows who they are. Ask the average MMA fan what they thought of the Henderson vs. Cerrone fight and they won't have a clue what you're talking about. | |

| Favorite MMA fighter? Posted: 10/13/2009 3:54:25 PM | I agree with the comments on the old school guys. Say what you will about Gracie, Severn or Shamrock but they were awesome. Those guys who fought in no weight, no time limit matches and fought multiple fights in one night. The fighting intel that exists today was extremely limited. You had no idea many times, what they hell you were in for. In reality, the UFC of yesterday and today are vastly different beasts. Both compelling. But very, very different. I think a lot of guys today, fight not to lose by the other guy's strength. (If that makes any sense). Whereas Keith Hackney went out there ,mullet flying, attempting to knock your block off.... | |

| Favorite MMA fighter? Posted: 10/14/2009 2:27:36 PM | GSP- Pound for pound best there is IMO Kenflo- vicious GnP and elbows, although his gameplan against BJ was disappointing Matt Hughes- his second fight with Frank Tritt was the greatest turn of events in UFC fight history. Urijah Faber- unpredictable style Forrest Griffin- very humble, big heart- his fight against Silva was a shock, though. | |

Present, how can you be Canadian and not love GSP, all around great fighter, hes fit and smart. Machida is a powerhouse and I love how he flies under the radar and doesnt get the hype that other guys get that they really dont deserve(like Leben who really is just a hard headed goon who gets lucky)
