There is no excuse for a 44 year old man to have sex with a 13 year old girl

Apparently some people differ with you... they feel their is a more ethical issue at hand and it has nothing to do with who Polanski fvcked. It's more about who was going to fvck Polanski..... god forbid karma pay him a visit.

I hope some of these posters never get called for jury duty.... especially a rape case involving young girls and older men.

He should serve time for his guilty plea.

If he is let go, our laws mean nothing. It will mean that with enough money and enough clout you can get away with anything, as he has for 30 years.

It's really disgusting.

Well apparently your ethics, along with those you agree with are not ethical enough for others. And you believe you don't want ethical people on a jury of a rape case between a young girl, getting drugged and sodomized by an older man? If he didn't do it, that would be one thing, but remember, he pleaded guilty.

Roman Polanski should be set free. He has suffered enough already. Forgiveness is bliss.

So let me get this straight, you drug and than sodomize a 13 year old girl, get caught, plead guilty... and than flee the country and live high and mighty in a mansion in the Alps in Europe... and you feel they suffered enough? So they shouldn't get the jail time anyone else would? Forgiveness is bliss.... But if you are going to do something wrong, paying for it is priceless!

Polanski was 44 and already a twice-Oscar-nominated director in March 1977 when he had sex with Samantha Gailey, a 13-year-old model he had hired for a photoshoot, at Jack Nicholson's house in Los Angeles. He has argued that the sex was consensual, saying the girl was "not unresponsive", though Gailey said he drugged her with painkillers and champagne before carrying out a "very scary" assault.

The director pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse in a deal with prosecutors that saw them drop charges of rape, drugging and sodomy, which could have carried a life sentence, but fled the country in February 1978 when it became apparent that he was likely to serve time in prison.
I have some questions:

1) Why couldn't the USA get Interpol to have Polanski extradited from France, or Switzerland, or wherever else in Europe he was? After all, Interpol are just as much against rape as the USA.

4) America had an extradition treaty with Switzerland that was in force from 1997, and with France from 2002. Why on Earth didn't the USA demand his extradition 13 years ago, or, if he fled to France, 8 years ago?

3) Surely her parents must have realised that going to a photoshoot at a Hollywood actor's home, where drugs, booze and casual sex are commonplace, is likely to expose her to people who would offer her drugs and booze, and where men would try to have sex with her, without worrying about her age? Why were they not put on trial for negligence?

4) There are plenty of things that could have been done about this. America is the big market in the film industry, and most films are made in America. Americans could have refused to see any film with Roman Polanski directing. The US government could have slapped a ban on any film that had Roman Polanski involved in it. To ensure that he could have been forced by the film industry to stand trial, they could even have banned anyone that worked with Polanski after he pleaded guilty from entering America. Considering just how much power America has over the film industry, they could have forced the hand of Hollywood and the European film industry from having anything to do with him. Why didn't the American people, and the US government, do anything about it?

Yet, he got FIVE Oscar nominations, and even won an Oscar in 2002. Frankly, I'm disgusted at the Oscars for touching him with a bargepole. I believe that it is the responsibility of anyone who cares about child abuse, and who believes the sentence against Polanski was fair, to ever support or watch the Oscars again.

I'm really astonished that in our society, that is so against child abuse, that everyone could say he is a scumbag NOW, 33 years after he pleaded guilty, and act as if we are all so innocent, when so much could have been done to address this injustice so long ago.

I was being sarcastic. I think that ass should have no more lenieincy than those who have been arrested and convicted of sex crimes from decades ago. Sarcastically speaking, I guess because he can make good movies he should be forgiven so we can enjoy more of his talents.

Roman Polanski should rot in prison and be listed as s sex offender and treated like the rapist he is. I don't care if he made the most amazing movie ever brought to film, which he hasn't, he is a pedophile and a rapist, he should not have been enjoying the life a celebrity as he has. What kind of sick mind thinks that someone having a talent makes it okay for them to harm people, break laws, etc.?

Samantha Geimer officially settled out of court with Roman Polanski in 1988 for an undisclosed amount of money. Samantha Geimer does not want Polanski to do any more jail time. Judge Rittenband behaved with judicial imprudence regarding the case. Roman Polanski suffered a lot of trauma during the Second World War in which he lost his mother at Auschwitz. In 1969, Roman Polanski's wife and unborn son were knifed to death by the Charles Manson gang. Perhaps everyone should just forgive Roman Polanski for his sin?

^^The civil settlement has nothing to do with the criminal charges to which he pled guilty.

Forgiveness has little to nothing to do with being held legally responsible for a crime to which he pled guilty.

He skipped town instead of going to his sentencing hearing. Other events in his life are just red herrings. But let's operate under your premise and apply it to another.

According to Charles Manson's relatives, his mother was an alcoholic who once sold him to a waitress for a pitcher of beer. Later lived with relatives while his mother served 5 years; that evidently didn't go well. He was repeatedly rejected and abandoned by his mother. Charles Manson suffered a lot of trauma during his childhood. Perhaps everyone should just forgive Charles Manson for his sins? (And by forgive, we obviously mean stop trying to hold him legally responsible for his crimes.)

Yeah, I could give you a laundry list of horrible things that happened to me in my childhood, hell I could bring you all to tears...doesn't mean as an adult I'm not responsible for my action, doesn't mean I get to rape children, doesn't mean I get a free pass plus forgiveness when I take out my problems in childhood on others. Pure D bullshit to say poor guy, let's all forgive him and let him go. He drugged and raped a 13 year old girl, I have to really wonder about people who think he's too special to serve his time for the crime.

So Charles Manson is responsible for Polanski drugging and raping a 13 yr old girl? What Manson's folowers did to his wife and child was tragic and unforgivable and undoubtedly changed Polanski but does that mean he gets a pass for raping a young girl? Does that mean he became a rapist because his wife and baby were murdered?

Following that reasoning, should all adults with abusive pasts be given a free pass when they commit crimes? We should just "get over it" when children are raped because something tragic happened in the rapist's life? Give me a break.....

So if we hold Manson responsible for Polanski's crimes, who should we hold responsible for Manson's crimes? If we find out that he was abused or had a tragedy in his life, then should he have never been punished for his crimes? Even the crime of murdering Polanski's family which in your opinion is what made Polanski a rapist? So who is ultimately responsible for the young girl's rape? Who should be punished? Following this reasoning I can keep going back into everyone's life and find a tragedy which ultimately does not make anyone responsible. I don't buy it.

The fact is that he committed a crime against a young girl and he ran away instead of taking responsibility for it and take his punishment. I don't care how long ago it was, he needs to take responsibility and face his crimes.

This really isn't about anyone "getting over" anything.

This is about Polanski and the crime that he admitted to, not about anyone or anything else.

So if I run over your mom with a school bus it is ok if I had a hard life?

Uhm, not so great with the logic there.

Polanski ran from the law for a crime that would not have given him much time. He should be extradited and retried on all of the counts originally against him since the original agreement was vacated when decided to skip out of town. On top of that, he should get additional time for skipping out to serve as a deterrant for anyone else making such plans.

The Polanski case is a prime example of the depravity of the wealthy and famous who think they are above the law. The fact this guy has been supported as an artist all of this time and won Oscars shows just how disgusting the Hollywood scene is.

Everyone should admit that Roman Polanski is a genius. He speaks five languages fluently and Jack Nicholson said that Polanski was a genius when they were filming Chinatown together in 1974. The house, that the infamous sexual act occurred, was supposedly the house shared by Jack Nicholson and Angelica Huston. Samantha Geimer never wanted to press charges against Roman Polanski and they have since made peace with each other.

Scorpiomover,

All these points you raise are very legitimate. And I have some answers:
1. This is likely because everyone in the legal community... and I mean *everyone*... including the people at interpol knew there was judicial misconduct in this case.
2. Why? Because the LA court system in question was publicly embarrassed by the movie "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired". It was only about a year after that movie went public that he got arrested.
3. Yeah, you'd think that wouldn't you? Why wouldn't they be held accountable? It's something I asked myself and on this thread. I know one thing for sure... I wouldn't have any child of mine go to a stranger's house unsupervised by myself or their mother. But this ties in with the answer to #4...
4. They didn't because everyone already knew he already spent time in jail for it... and they knew that Geimer was basically a party girl who had been doing drugs, having sex, taking Qualludes and other things for at least two years prior. And you can see that in the links provided in post #130. Geimer, at that age, was anything but an innocent child. She knew it, the lawyers knew it, the judge knew it (but he was up for reelection, so he wanted to make a name for himself by reneging on a the deal made), people she worked with knew it and her parents knew it (as made obvious in your 3rd question). She was only a "child" by the strict and technical legal definition of it.

Now you say you're 'astonished' about this case.

I'm not astonished at all.

I'm not at all astonished how people when talking about this case get all "holier than thou"... but then if you really study their actions, they're not really walking their talk. Did they, for example, NOT see any Polanski movies... or movies and shows his supporters were involved with? Did they boycott the Oscars? Did anyone shut off their TVs or have their cable TV service disconnected in protest?

Didn't think so.

And most people who are talking about this haven't read the full transcripts as I provided in post #130.

And make no mistake... this is ALL about politics and the LA courts trying to save face. Maybe that's why Swiss authorities *still* haven't deported him 8 months or so after he's been arrested.

And to the id1ots who think that Polanski is similar to Manson... How many of Charlie Manson's victims are asking that he be allowed to walk free?

And before discussing this further, you might want to take a look at this:

ZekeStone: Your last post in response to Scorpiomover is the best non-biased commentary so far on this thread. All of your statements are true. I did see the movie Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired. There was judicial misconduct by Judge Rittenband who was more worried about his public relations image and he was also a paparazzi-seeker too. Too many people talk the talk but don't walk the walk in real life.

There are a lot of different legal and emotional issues related to the entire situation; as far as his arrest and current legal struggle, most of those issues serve as red herrings.

This thread continues to be interesting because so many thoughtful, rational posters continue to be caught up in those distractions. It is not often that so many are led astray.

a lot of time has passed, the so called 'victim' does not want him in jail, in 79, a lot of people where doing things that where kinky, the poor man should be left alone, and stop being harassed by the american authorities
this is a no issue, no harm was done
the legal system should be chasing after crooks on wall street, not innocent men

I did see the movie Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired.

uh, yeah, let's base our decisions on what a Hollywood movie says?

like, according to Hollywood's version of "history", the US Navy captured the "Enigma" coding machine from the Germans.. (in U-571) in May, 1941..before the US was officially at war even with Germany or involved in WW II

too bad that in real life it was the British Royal Navy who captured it..but Hollywood figured this wouldn't sell as well?

IN real life, there were 15 captures of Enigma material by Allies, 13 by the British, one by Canadians, one by US the US did not capture any until June, 1944, after the code had long been broken, the tide of war had already begun and Germany was clearly going to lose

A previous poster touched on a good point in that why would the girl be there in the first place? He was well known for his drug habits, I mean who was her chaperon at this gig?
Kind of like kids sent to spend the weekend with Micheal Jackson. Even if you didn't think the rumours were true would you really be that careless?
She was thirteen and alone (?) at this house.

the 'girl' was far from being a virgin, she was into drugs, sex and alcohol, she went on modeling jobs, unsupervised, it was the late 70s, a lot of people where doing kinky stuff, this man is innocent,if the law should go after anybody, it should be the girls parents
she was a promiscuous , drug user, who was sexually very active, not only with him, but many men. the kiker is she does not want him to go to court over this, she does not think he did anything wrong

^^Wow. I don't know where to start. That post is so wrong for so many reasons, both factually and ethically. Yow.

Let's start with this: Having sex with a 13yr old is wrong.

Or we could start with the fact that he is clearly not innocent, by anyone's account, including his own.

You might not agree that he should be held legally responsible so many years later, but "innocent?" Good lord.

I don't know what the quotation marks around the word "girl" are supposed to imply, but she has not even been a teenager for 1 year. She is a girl... what else would you suppose she be termed?
