Posted: 10/4/2009 10:30:27 AM | When I first came here I wasn't dating. I was married to a Chicago boy, so I wasn't aware of all that. Later, I noticed that people tend to stick with their own mostly and did not socialize much with 'outsiders'. I have Polish friends who wouldn't date others than Polish, and Greeks who did the same, etc. Sometimes there was the language barrier, sometimes the 'comfort zone' of common knowledge. Umm. the problem was that she was American, and the ex was Egyptian. Muslim law can be different, and with the children potentially exposed to the evils of The West, he was awarded custody of the children, who then stayed in Egypt and were raised as good little Egyptian Muslims. | |

Posted: 10/4/2009 10:48:24 AM | In Egyptian culture, the father and husband is the head of the family. Divorce is rare and women have few rights. The courts there would probably automatically award custody to the father, especially if the mother is a Westerner because Western women are seen as less than stellar models of womanhood and virture. BTW, it is more about culture than religion. There are many Christians in Egypt who have the same cultural attitude about women's place in society. I recently read a very interesting novel dealing with that very topic: FROM SLEEP UNBOUND, by Andree Chedid.
This problem is not one that only happens when you marry somene from non-Western cultures. There has been a story recently on Dateline about a man who married an Brazilian woman. She took the child to Brazil and was awarded custody. She later died in childbirth and the Brazilian courts gave custody of the American man's child to his Brazilian step father. The American has been fighting for years to get his son back.

This horror story has been talked about for years. If someone wishes to risk the consequences, knowing very well what could happen and NOT stay in the states to have their rights observed, well,,,

We hear the horror stories of the sensational cases of Parental abduction we hardly ever hear about the everyday cases of American Mothers and Fathers taking their kids. It happens way to often, Yes there is punishment if they get caught. However the majority never do get caught. | |

Too old to kidnap any kids though and I think mine could fight back pretty effectively if need be at this point.
But I had noticed that people jump to extreme versions of cultural differences, sometimes even some of the little ones can make or break ya too. How about north and south or California and New York... aren't those cultural differences too? Professional and blue collar, black/white... someone from a big family and an only child.... hey life's a crap shoot even if you've lived down the street your whole lives... no guarantees any way you try.
Who's to say your soul mate isn't out there somewhere speaking another language waiting for you right now?  | |

What was meant to be a joyous occasion, was forever marred, but also a reminder of how precious this was to her and my family. Most of my family is from either the West Indies or Canada; me being the first born in this country. I would never, ever think twice about dating or caring about someone from a foreign land. The world is so huge and wonderful -- all of the colors, flavors, textures - it's so rich. English is one of the most difficult languages to master (think of hearing the words there, their, they're, etc. and not realizing they have different meanings, yet sound the same.) Yet some people have low tolerance for those who don't learn it right away. Why then do we have to study English at least 12 years in school? Expansion and diversity go hand in hand. | |

Yet even though I'm looking for a live out relationship, I suspect there are people from certain cultures who lean more toward the type of thing I'm looking for than others.
I've always made a better friend than a 'wife' and the more defined the roles are the worse I feel as does my partner.
I've been trying to fit my personality - akin to a sqare peg in a round hole - for many years. And it hasn't done anyone any good.
Yet tell a guy that and often he assumes I mean friends with benefits -- and that's not where I'm coming from either. | |

In fact, they were all born in the United States......

I may live to regret it or even perish in the attempt but something tells me the cautionary tales are deceptive exaggerations kept in circulation by domestic women whose jealousy enrages them whenever they think a local man might discover the many and exotic delights of foreign-born women. Once when I was on a fishing trip to Canada our boat came tantalizingly close to another one that had a maple leaf flag and with three woman on board, whose strange laughter haunts me to this day. Then there was the time I rode in an elevator with a woman from an eastern European nation whose Slavic features and mysterious demeanor so effectively quelled my claustrophobia that I stayed on past my floor just to remain in her presence a few seconds longer. I could see myself dating an alien and would certainly marry one if she needed to establish residency here at the cost of my sexual freedom for a spell. | |

The Gary Shandling movie, "What Planet Are You From?" (2000) did exterior filming one block from where I was working at the time. The studio stole our parking lot for a month while they shot scenes outside an bank they redressed inside and out. The parked all the movie cars in our lot along with equipment trailers and the like. I went down a few times during lunch just to watch.
Unfortunately the film sucked, so the parking sacrifice was in vain.... | |
