Probing?- true ...but not painless.
I remember the repeated interviews, at the INS offices in Chicago before and during my ex-wife's residency. Travel downtown during rush hour, stand an hour and a half in line for a scheduled interview, answer one stupid question like "What color is her toothbrush?" ("I have no frickin' idea!") , pay the $75 fee and get an appointment for the next "interview".
All to protect the US from one English speaking mexican engineer (in a field that US companies were importing from overseas by the boatloads at the time) . I'm sure you all feel safer. | |

If the aforementioned alien can speak and spell, but there are cultural differences, would that affect your relationship in the long run?
How about people with different religions, customs and traditions; wouldn’t that be a major put off?
Just curious what the general sentiment is among the 45 + people.
OP, I wonder if you have experienced any difficulty finding men in our age range who are concerned about dating someone who is not 'all American,' essentially. Just curious. Normally, I wouldn't think so as you are an attractive lady and that's pretty much what most men seem to care about first, then if you get along, I would imagine that most don't care if you are from another country, as long as you speak English and they can communicate with you.
However, your question has made me think a bit, and I can see that there may be some people who are wary of dating someone from another country or culture. I think there are people who don't want to deal with anyone who doesn't speak English well, and so they might not want to date someone from another country. A few years ago, I was seeing a Chinese man, not Chinese American but a man from China who had been in the States a couple of years. He was educated, an attorney, and spoke fluent English. My sister-in-law invited me over for a Fourth of July barbeque, and I asked if I could bring the man I was seeing. I was surprised that she seemed hesitant, asking me if he was going to be a problem, if he was not going to be able to speak to people, if he was fluent in English, or if there were going to be any other reasons he'd make her and her guests uncomfortable by being foreign. Actually, I was really shocked by this as I hadn't realized she was so small minded. I told her of course not, and we went and had a great time. But the incident did open up my eyes as to how some people might think.
I live in Europe now and some men do not want to date me because I am an American. They might date an English woman or an Australian, but they don't like 'Americans.' Some. At one event, there was a German man who was 'chatting me up;' he thought I was English, but when he realized I was American, his face fell, and he almost immediately turned and walked away.
The bottom line for me is that I don't like closed minded people anyway, and anyone who is going to immediately shut down their interest someone who is not exactly the same ---such closed minded people can go on their way, I wouldn't date them!
For you, I wouldn't worry about having an accent; most Americans love accents!  | |

It appears to me that when it is only about socializing it is not an issue.
But when it comes to relationships, there is a certain hesitation though.
One re-occuring question is "Are you going back?" Like you will drop everything one day and bolt back to where you came from (Greece in my case).
I try to make people understand, that after 20 years of linving here, this is where I belong. This is where my life, my work, my friends, are, this is home. I go to Greece for vacation because I have family there, but 10 days in the trip, I get homesick. Not that there's anything wrong with Greece, it's just not home anymore.
On the flip side, even though the vast majority of American people are accepting of "imports" there are always some close minded who will regard you as a lesser species.

I remember one man I was dating asked me if I would ever consider going back to Germany to live. I told him that I'm just as comfortable there as I am here. I know the language (can read, speak, and write it), I know the customs, I have a German driver's license, I have all kinds of friends there ... not a problem. Then I asked him, "Why do you ask? Are you planning on moving there and you need a translator?"
I'd have no problem dating someone from a "foreign country" ... did it before ... would do it again. I wonder if my nursing license is good in Canada? | |

I would imagine that you would be required to write the Canadian exams in whichever province you wished to nurse in. I do not have a "written in stone" answer but I'm sure one could be found on the internet at the respective provincial nursing sites. | |

Nothing like a European or Latin or Israeli accent! Try finding that in my part of the woods!
But, not if they were wanted by Homeland Security, Mossad, Interpol or INS.

So #1 -- he was old enuf to be my father and I was only in my 20s at the time. Ewwww! LOL! AND -- #2 -- he was married. Double ewwww! Maybe it's a European thang (I've heard men are almost expected to have mistresses) but I'm just an unsophisticated southern gal.
The other was (as best I could understand the broken English) the brother of the illegal alien my neighbor had married (and probably present in the country illegally himself). Can you say "Green card?" I knew ya could. | |

I think most men think it's great, and they love the food! I, speaking for myself only, do think an insecure man (who you didn't even think was insecure) will get upset if you accidentally start speaking Greek fluently with other men. It's only natural to want to, and I was born and raised in the States. A secure man will think it's wonderful that you speak another language and will want to learn some of it! We have a wonderful culture, and if a man doesn' t care for it knowing that there is no way to "undo" it, it is a part of our soul, well then, sorry, I won't deny my heritage for a man. -don't commit crimes
-forsake their country completely, call themself 100% americans (not afro, mexi, latin, euro etc) -we all came from other countries at one time or another -once you decide to become a U.S. citizen you should be 100% in -(or get 100% out)
if you cant melt in without expecting a handout or change to make you feel better -go home... | |
