Well, I'm thinking it has to be Gwynn, who played in a bandbox of a stadium for years - if I remember correctly, Qualccom Stadium was 320 feet on the corners. That's awfully small.

Just got back to the forum.
Gwynn is my favorite player of all time and a great guess.
However you got it right back a few with

AL KALINE

the correct answer.

I never saw him play but everyone says he was the complete player.
My guess it that he was so good he could play real shallow and look for it with a ground ball hitter.
Great guy too I hear. The anti-thesis of Ty Cobb :)

I can't see a guy with only 165 outfield assists from right field having more assists to first base than a guy who had 346 outfield assists from right field, especially considering the two eras involved.
Hooper played in an era where right fielders (and fielders in general) played much more shallow than during Kaline's time. Throws from the outfield to first base were not extremely rare back at the turn of the century. With that in mind, I have no doubt that he had more outfield assists to first base than Kaline.
I'm guessing they didn't keep such detailed stats back in Hooper's time.
Do you have a source for this claim?

My only source is a life long Detroit resident who used to be the NCAA commissioner of hockey (not that that has anything to do with baseball but a reliable source in general and a huge Tiger's fan).
You may be right though about old times.
I'll ask him about Harry Hooper.
