All this talk about Union corruption, lazy workers blah blah blah,if your paycheck is bigger because of a Union then Unions are good...most people can't afford to take the high road...the need to earn a living...CEO's, and government officials and politicians are every bit as corrupt as any Union leader could ever hope to be so there is no difference...America seems to be in the grip of some self destructive and at the same time naive phsychosis...let's throw it all away, give up...sit in our government cottages and eat government cheese and wait for the check each month from big daddy government.

I've worked in both union and nonunion jobs, I've seen people protected by the unions who should have lost their jobs and part time people pay dues but get very little in benefits. The union is very restrictive on work hours and who can do a certain job, drive up wages to point that the company can't compete in the open market, then wonder why the company goes bankrupt. The unions use to protect the workers against unsafe/unfair working conditions and worked with the company to solve problems, now they are as bad as the corporations.

I believe the best entity of being in a union is that you are not
" An employee at will" which non-union employees are.
You can be fired or let go without notice or reason.
Being in a union protects you from such practice.
However
I've seen people protected by the unions who should have lost their jobs and part time people pay dues but get very little in benefits.

Is indeed sadly true!

Anyone who thinks it's only unions that protect the useless havn't been working that long or their experience is limited...ever work for a "family" owned business or just any business at all where certain "untouchables" exist who can do anything they want and keep a job....labor unions are generaly opposed by business owners and anyone who beleives in the traditional master/slave power structure for whatever reason

I though I would retouch on this topic only because I want into the union where my nephew works.
He is going into his third year apprenticeship for pipe fitting. He is already earning over twenty bucks an hour and only has to work four days a week for a full pay. Don't get me wrong I do realize that it isn't a cake walk and he does work outside quite a bit but lately I have to wonder how he manages to keep his job.

Think about it, he works four days mon- thurs, "ten " hours a day. The reason I highlight the ten hours part is that I have worked in construction and know that unlike a factory that the concept that they actually put in ten hours minus lunch and breaks is a joke. And it's really not that they are performing brain surgury, it's drainage pipes for cripes sake.
I won't touch travel time allowance or how many times they are forced to sit based on when they can't do what they do because of what some other union has or hasn't done and they have to wait for that.
Plus, I am not against the concept of enjoying a beer or two after a hard days work but after obseing the work patterns of my nephew who paid weekly that having a couple of beers everyday seems to be the norm. He also has missed a few thursdays due to a desire to drink beers and play online poker on wednesdays till the sun comes up or his ride calls him a and says he isn't going in because he went out on payday night (wed) and isn't up to it.
Now, that isn't the part that annoys me the worst. With all the wasted time during the week he can make up for the missing days because they are "working" overtime on Friday(?) and can make even more "working" on saturday. So it seems that the union dues they pay are well worth every penny. Take days off whenever, not really put in full days, hey what's not to like about that?

The OP did ask about how this flies during these tough economic times. How many building projects do you hear of that finish on time? Our local hospital was in need of some upgrades in the buildings pipes. The usual bidding for the job happened and the company my nephew works for got it. A two and a half year gig, that is now starting into it's fourth year. They are millions of dollars over budget and it isn't the company that is taking the hit for this, it's us the citizens who are paying for this fiasco.

There has been a recent investigation in Quebec about infalated prices on new housing projects and I am curious as to if they will really get to the bottom of the who got the extra cash but it must be like they say, once you are on the inside making the bucks it is best just to not rock the boat.
Where do I get an application?
