| the drunken phone call Posted: 10/12/2009 7:25:02 AM | Assuming I'm already awake (which is the case as often as not), sure, I answer. Sometimes they're just having a bit of insomnia themselves and simply hoped to catch me awake. But, this being about drunken calls specifically - if they can't get a cab to take them because they're too drunk, I'll go pick 'em up. Haven't actually had to do this, but I am willing. With a pail.
But mostly I've found that wee-hours drunken calls are "confessional" calls of one sort or another, with the party calling being already home, and I gently dissuade them and encourage them to go drink some water, take an aspirin or Tylenol, and go to bed! Because they might not want to go into the same topic(s) when they're sober, and it's entirely likely that I'll be just as happy to have never heard it.
If I've turned off my ringer to go to sleep, though, I won't even know they called 'til the next day, anyway.
At my age this rarely happens, most of us have slowed down on drinking, but the rare occasions when it does and I missed it have resulted in some really funny messages. "Where are you? Where - where are you?" Heh. I'm home in bed, of course... "I... wanted to talk to you..." Aw. I got that. You called me! "Okay, I guess you're not answering." Yep, getting the voice mail was probably a good tip-off there. | |
