Why is it that apparently any type of music is deemed as acceptable apart from metal
Posted: 10/21/2009 4:50:09 AM

As a metal fan it becomes extremely frustrating when reading the phrase "I am into all kinds of music...apart from heavy metal". It's crazy just how many people appear to share this sentiment.

people who state this on their profile have no clue about music, they are into generic mainstream and havent even bothered to develop their tast to a point where they can identify a few different genres or artists they like. If they like everything except metal it can be assumed that they like~: balie funk, cajun, dub, emo, free jazz, glam rock, honkytonk, irish trad, jazzfusion, korean pop, latin Jazz, medievil folk, neoclassical, organic house, punk, Quan Ho, rockabilly, sea shanty, trance, urban Jazzz, vaudelville, waltz, Xian rock, yodeling, and Zulu Music!
When quizzed further I think you will find they like POP! And do you really think you will be compaitble with this kind of person.

You nailed it.

It seems to me that it would be far more beneficial if people were to state the kinds of music they are actually into than to fixate on the one particular kind they don't like. For one it would be a far more honest comment than to say they like all kinds of music apart from whatever kind they particularly dislike.

I'm still interested in hearing any other theory's as to why metal gets such a hard time other than it's not a mainstream form of entertainment, or could it be that this is the reason in it's entirety?

I like a large range of music. Admittedly most of may tastes are centred around melodic guitar driven rock/pop. I wouldn't say I am a fan of "Metal" but if you look in my collection you will see a Megadeath CD ("Countdown to Extinction" was a pretty good album) a Metallica CD (the black album) and even a couple of Limp Bizkit CD's as well as everything Faith No More have released.

The problem appears to be the stereotypical image that Metal fans have built up over the years. The bands are marketed in such a way that the "Metal scene" attracts the outsiders, which is something most people don't really want to consider themselves.

Marilyn Manson is marketed as an almost otherworldly or demonic creature, the music backs up that and to the outsider it looks and sounds music and image manipulation that plays into social disorder. Having read and seen interviews with the man himself he is clearly a intelligent, literate and talented bloke, but only people who dig deeper into this will realize it is all an act to entertain.

Interesting thread. My own music tastes are quite diverse, I was brought up on classical music as I was taught piano from an early age. However once listening to Metallica's Black Album, specifically Sad But True I had to learn to play the Guitar which I did though my later teen years.

I think Metal can be used broadly to cover alot of bands and sub genre's as someone said. I'll always favour Metallica over Iron Maiden, Rob Zombie over Marilyn Manson and Godsmack over Limp Bizkit. But you can find such diverse bands as Opeth who do the death growl but they are so musically talented, they even recorded an entire acoustic album.

Rammstein are another inventive industrial type band, but I think the same could be said for Dimmu Borgir who use alot of orchestral strings through some of their songs. You can look to other bands like Katatonia (not the welsh one) who has a very melodic and thoughtful type of sound. But then I'm always in the mood for something heavy like a Lamb of God or Children of Bodom that gives a great heavy song.

I think people see Metal and think of bands like Napalm Death or some of the crappy Nu Metal bands that emerged, but if you look beyond these there are some true gems out there.

Personally I can listen to Rachmaninov to John Barry to Stevie Ray Vaughan to Dimmu Borgir... depends on the mood!

Welll after reading this thread, i totally agree with you!

Most people who dont like metal are afraid to break the mould so to speak, they wouldnt listen to anything outside of mainstream, almost in a way of fitting in with the majority.. simply for that reason. so they arent singled out. IE ( attention seekers and people who change to each person they meet )

i myself play metal! infact my favourite band is the mighty Slipknot
but my god, people listen ( nay, infact LOOK at slipknot ) and say " eww there freaks "
why are they? because they dont spend £1,000,000 s on hair doos and make up??!?

and if metal is so "bad" please enlighten me on why its OK for the mainstream pop acts to MIME!! thats not talent!!
at least with metal bands you have raw talent and real performances!!
My fave bands would include slipknot all the way through to Massive attack ( who are very far away from metal! ) but myself love In Flames,Soilwork,Chimaira and that style..
and i could go on and on... but every few months, every mainstream act copys one another. sampling this that & the other and also releasing songs that sound very similar..like atm, everything has a euro dance edge to it..so everyone jumps on that bandwagon...

i can tell you now.. i play guitar, and metal is beyond doubt a very technical genre to play. whereas mainstream pop etc is very basic and even predictible!
but i do enjoy every genre there is! even quite often chart muisc .. if its original i like it!!

its just the people who just want to fit in with the norm and not ever risk being singled out so they avoid anything other than the types of acts that blag about money, girls, cars n all that stuff and i HATE that.. they have NO respect for fans, just about cash. and i cant stand that. as some may know what i refer to by this statement:

Racing down the motorway doing air guitar just doesn't really work with Whitney Houston blasting out the speakers.

I could say exactly the same about Dance music or Hip Hop and R&B though......

But to say that you "wouldn't even call it music" isn't even down to personal opinion, it's fundamentally wrong because as I stated before, anything with a definable rhythm is on a very basic level, classified as music.

The fact that metal more often than not has complex rhythms and layered melodies all over the place and that the bands are all usually very technically proficient at their instruments means that metal is often actually more musical than the mainstream dirge played on the radio day in/day out......

And don't worry, you're not offending anyone, it just makes you look quite closed minded is all.

It isn't closed minded to have different tastes than someone else!

Otherwise you'd have to enjoy every single cuisine, movie, holiday destination or risk having the same accusation squared against you.

I like metal, for the record, but wouldn't give a tuppeny hoot whether other people do or not. Why should whether other people like it effect the pleasure you get out of it?

Why?

I don't like meat for example, I don't have to list what I do like to be 'honest'.

I don't want my profile to be filled up with a list of all the artists, genres, sub-genres et etc that I do like, so if I felt a strong enough dislike for something I would name it.

Some music I love, some I merely like, some I dislike and some makes me want to hurl.

Edit: I read and understood msg 53 thanks. I was querying your use of the word 'honest' but don't trouble yourself to explain ................... it could have been a rhetorical question after all.

I did say IMO I wouldn't even call it music. Music to me is somthing that should be beautiful and I am sorry but Metal just isn't to me.

How rude! Well I obviously did offend.
A different taste in music doesn't make me close minded or expressing that opinion.

And as I stated, it has nothing to do with opinion.

Just because you don't like metal, doesn't stop it being music.....

Why? I didn't actually say you were closed minded. I simply said it makes you look close minded.

No, you are right, having a different taste in music doesnt make you close minded, not at all.

But you implied that metal isn't actually music......

It's all down to stereotypes and people's perceptions of others. The average metal fan might dress a certain way, and hail satan (according to tabloids) and the average happy hardcore fan might pop a pill. Silly i know but they are just some of the perceptions that stick with people from the playground upwards.

I myself play in a grindcore band. How many people have even heard of that genre! (Clue: Early Napalm death)

Some styles can sound like a woosh of noise at first, but if you actually give it a chance, your ears will eventually adjust and decipher it for you.

Because for most it is an aquired taste and some people will never like it.

I like all kinds of music........................apart from ABBA

It's mot just metal. I've noticed 3 genres in particular come in for a lot of stick, and I'd guess it's because of their negative associations:

Metal fans - long hair, never wash, are into devil-worship and have never had a girlfriend
Country & Western fans - redneck racists who like guns and drinking (never a good combo)
Rap fans - misogynistic, aggressive and into gangs and guns.

Similarly, a lot of women seem to list R&B as a favourite - R&B having seductive and sexy connotations. Well, who'd have thought, eh?

That's probably true. Another thing is metal has never really progressed or changed over the past 30 years. There are underground bands trying to do that very thing but it's never made it into the metal mainstream. Again, with the whole metal "identity" that has never really progressed either. Go to a Death metal gig and chances are 90% of the people there (If there are any) are dressed like Cannibal corpse circa 1992.

I'm in a grindcore band (think sludge and punk mixed with thrash metal) and i look about as metal as daffy duck but i'm not in it for the style (the style sucks) i'm purely about the music and the buzz i get listening to and performing it.

Another observation i've from my experiences, die hard metal fans i've come across have a tendancy to tar anyone who isn't wearing a black band tshirt or doesn't have long hair with the: "you're a townie/trendy/chav" brush. Scared because "outsiders" are into "their" genre. Norrowminded at it's best.

Well...when I had enough hair to do it, I was a heavy metal kid...now, I still love the music but cannot do the head thing anymore.
Still, the air guitar needs no long hair, I do have something left

(I used to love Iron Maiden, worship Kiss and adore LA Guns)

Which just back's up the theory discussed that people who say they like all kinds of music apart from Metal, generally don't really know what it is and base their assumptions on the stereotypes of what they THINK it is.

on the whole i think it's because metal sucks the most .....

Did I miss the meeting where you were appointed spokesperson for the entire human race for all matters in relation to music taste?

Another thing is metal has never really progressed or changed over the past 30 years.

That's nonsense. If this was true then every band out there would sound like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin and obviously this is blatantly not true.

There are underground bands trying to do that very thing but it's never made it into the metal mainstream.

Underground metal by it's very nature never will be mainstream in any way shape or form quite simply because they don't want to be and any underground bands that pop their head over into any form of mainstream territory get chastised and disowned by all three of their fans....

On a personal level, I find most "underground" bands simply use the term "underground" as loosely veiled way of saying their are utter rubbish and are generally never going to have any degree of mainstream success anyway without actually having to admit it.

Fair points. No they don't all sound like Black Sabbath, but a lot of euro metal is heavily influenced by Maiden; similar sounding vocals and riff progressions.

A lot of the better doom/stoner bands sound like Sabbath slowed down. I love it.

I've been listening to various kinds of metal since 1989. You obviously have NO idea about all the different genres of it. I suggest you listen to Carcass's album "heartwork" then come back and tell me that sucks.
