Ideas for spending time with kids...

My boys are teenagers but we still have family time, it's amazing the things you discover about your children when they are relaxed.

We spend a great deal of time in the car driving to sports activities and we share music to pass the time. The discussions are awesome.

My son is 15 so he's at the age where he'd rather spend time with his friends and practice for sports. But, I still tuck him in the nights he's with me. Because this has been our routine since he was an infant, we both go into 'relaxed' mode and he tells me things then.

Also when we're driving. Something about driving that he opens up and tells (or asks) me the most amazing things. One I'll never forget was when he was about 11, a 6 hr trip where he'd put his jacket over his head for an hour or so (I thought he was asleep) when he took the jacket off and asked "mom, why does girls hair smell so good?" Took all my self control to not laugh and I calmly replied "because they wash it". He thought that was a good answer.

this is off topic but son just came back to me last night after being with his dad for awhile. I couldn't help looking in on him a couple times this morning while he sleeps. Doesn't your heart just about burst when you see your kid(s) sleeping peacefully?

Reading some of the other responses, I remember my kids drove me nuts when they were little, making forts and wanting to leave them up for days. Still remember when I was a kid and my mother allowed us to build a fort around the television every Thanksgiving and my brother and I would watch the parade.

My oldest brother started family night accidentally. They were living in an older apartment in the city and their heat went out so they piled into the living room and crashed there together. They started doing it a couple of times a month, whether the heat was on or not, getting movies and popping corn.

Swimming at the wave pool seems to exhilarate the kids...and to calm them down...well more like wear them down and out..... to the point where they want to cuddle with me.

ya.. the pool is a good time...and very relaxing for all of us.
I have 3 kids... so destressing is a good thing.

I try to enjoy and make the most of all our time together...reading to my baby, watching the hummingbirds, cooking and cleaning with my older girls (they don't always enjoy it like my 2 year old)...

I prefer any time spent together without distractions, i.e. no TV, radio, etc.

I'm praying for more patience too...

My daughter and I have "Mom and Me" night. She gets to pick out something to do that doesn't cost anything.. or very little and we do that.
Usually its watching a video that she has or playing a board game. Of course, there are the nights we do "makeovers". She's 9 but when she was younger I usually ended up looking like a circus clown by the end of the night. lol.
