My last two relationships were with people I met in pubs, the last one was a POF meet and he wasn't on the site! Get out there and mingle people - I just get sick of sitting on my own on the sofa. It's all in the eye contact if you actually see someone you like the look of, glance at them and if they meet your eye or smile subtly check back in a few minutes. If they're looking again, they're interested. Either that or you have broccoli in your teeth!

In the meantime, don't forget you went out to have a good time with your mates. Finding a suitable person who'll float your boat shouldn't be your only objective or you'll come across as desperate. Life is too short!

POF is great for making friends to go out with, and who knows.. maybe 'The One' is also swimming around in this pond if such a person exists!

My mum "has afew more miles on the clock"....but don't tell her I said that lol

Anyway, she is always getting chatted up. She joined a bowling club! Apparently they are trying to get more people into the sport too! She's tried to even recruit me into it...but I think I'll take a rain cheque for now.

Oh yeh and nice shoes dreamy skies! Nice shoes always help in the chatting up department!

But how do you know if they are just being friendly or do fancy you ?

Genuine question, as I freely admit that I never have a flippin clue !

Wink at them and see if they wink back or smile shyly and look at the floor

Ok, let's turn the question on it's head. How do you show someone you're NOT interested in that you're not interested without a word being spoken? You don't look at them. You turn your body away, you don't interact. You do this instinctively cos you don't want to have the awkwardness of having to speak to them if they come over.

Beleive me, if he's not interested he won't return your look or smile. We all know (the vast majority of us) that we're not Miss United Kingdom, but there's a number of people out there who DO find us attractive. Some of us - thinking of one poster here - just CAN'T overcome their feeling of lack of confidence even when someone clearly likes them they balls it up! They know they've done it, they just can't help themselves!!

That's not most of us though, we're interested in finding someone we like, fancy and could be compatible with without getting hurt in the process. Whether that's in the flesh by chance meeting, or on here by a list of criteria and using the search engines to 'rule in' those people we think we're interested in.

see! this guy is managing to get it on at the bus stop for crying out loud! and let's be honest, the bus stop first thing in the morning isn't an arena that most of us would associate with getting it on with the opposite sex!, still further proof, if any were needed, that the country is getting it on en masse!!! whatever next?

I don't think I saw anyone on the thread earlier saying that they were never getting approached or having unrealistic expectations, as for being the last bastion for the terminally unwanted, or people not getting any.

I may not have been chatted up for a while but that doesn't mean I've never dated anyone in the last wee while. I'm sure some people are only here for the forums anyway, whatever they get from that might be enough for some people.

Maybe some people are picky, but picky isn't always a bad thing.

Ahhhh to be young again, it was so much simpler then.

Might have more to do with being 28lbs lighter, wrinkle free with perky boobs; and the men call us women shallow lol

I totally agree with that!!!

And what Skies said, it was easier when we were younger, not because we were more attractive necessarily, but perhaps less burdened by hurt we've picked up over the years. AND - big factor here - there's less people in our age group available now... a lot of likely candidates are fixed up!

Going back to the OP, one of the factors when you go out with someone you meet 'outside' of POF or other dating sites, you don't have any clues about what they're looking for whereas online you have the profile to give you some idea - if it's honest. That's a whole other debate though...

Good point, there is also the "Are they single or not" dilemma ...
Nowadays rings are not the norm, so at least in the old days a ring, or white band where it had been removed gave us an idea of their status ..
I live in fear of accidentally chatting to someone who might be in a relationship, why? because I would hate to embarrass them and make a total twat of myself in the process ..
Catch 22 really ..

By the way does giving you a second look the first time you meet..
Smiling the second time..
And saying hello the third time with a smile, constitute being interested ??

I have come to a conclusion about that. When you meet somone in RL at a bar or club where ever, the first thing you say isnt " what are you looking for" is it unlike on line where that question is asked pretty early on in a convosation. And thats why I dont think it works we should be more vague about our wants and not be so precise because you dont kno if a person has what your looking for untill you get to kno them in person. I dont think just words work.

I may have some flirts with the people who I know to be single. But time will tell. I am kind of outgoing person who regularly spends time outdoors/socializing, so finding a date should be quite easy especially if I get bubbly after couple wine glasses... Usually I just try to build up conversations with little spice of humour. :)

I'm blind (I use the computer with the aid of special talking software) This might sound weird but I actually prefer to meet women on line first.... at least then you can read their profiles to discover what they think about themselves.

I meet a lot of women whilst shopping in supermarkets, they seem to be waiting there for me but hey is it me that attracts them or my dog?

I envy those of you that can instantly tell by looking at someone what they are actually like, but I still think I prefer a persons Personality, inner characteristics to the outside "Shell"

Well. You should take a bit of advantage of your dog. ;) Even if he/she is your guiding dog, you have a little chance to meet women who have dogs too. Labradors are ultracute anyway.

I guess it did as he is ex-directory now

I have just spent a couple of days out and about with my gorgeous, darling daughter. Despite the vast difference in our ages and shoe size, she frequently comments on recently purchased clothes of mine with " I am sooooooooo borrowing that" and she does

I trust her judgement, if she thinks I look less than good she will say and always has done, but if she thinks I look good she will tell me that too. The last couple of days she has commented on 'guys checking me out' ........... I am oblivious to that fact if we are shopping as my radar is programmed for shoes

If we were sat together in a bar I would have thought the dirty perves were checking her out

She's not blonde is she? hehe only messing Settings changed (I think, or maybe I'm blonde too!). You can give it a try Cilla, who knows you might have to buy a hat for the wedding . Back to topic though, I did say about being in the right place at the right time in my previous post. I agree though, the older you are the smaller the pond to fish in .

Ah well, at least she didn't do what my darling son did. And that's say in a loud booming voice, in amongst the chiller cabinets in the local Co-Op, "Oh my GOD Mum - that creepy old dude is SO checking you out!".

He was indeed. But funnily enough, he stopped.

I get 'checked out' all the time, but not one damned one of them approach me. Must be the trip wires, landmines and snipers I keep about my person

My friends and I have been going out regularly over the last 18 months and not one of us has been chatted up let alone asked for a date or our phone number.
Maybe the men are all doing the same as you... waiting to be asked.

I go out a lot with friends but usually to eat not to pubs/clubs so I guess the chances of being "chatted up" are slim.. I find if I'm in a pub - standing at the bar then it's easy to get chatting and have a banter with guys - but if sitting down in a group of friends it's less likely that a guy is going to break into our group to start chatting.......mind you being an old fat minger probably doesn't help ...........thought I'd better get that in before some smart arse said it
