| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 4:22:37 PM | I didn't buy any candy this year.....had to buy a new battery for my car instead. Boo-hoo! Ah, well, any excuse is better than none, I always say.
Have been invited to a couple of parties, but I know the local police will be spying those locations very closely. Late hubby's youngest daughter dropped in not too long ago with her 2-month old baby boy so I could see him in his first ever Halloween costume. He slept through the entire visit, but I took pix anyway.
Later, I think I'll retire to the bedroom and turn on the TV in there. After spending Tuesday and Wednesday helping hang sheetrock on the walls and ceiling in an upstairs bedroom that's about 14' x 22', I'm just a little sore. Ah, heck, I am mighty sore! So I definitely need the rest.
As for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, it's definitely too early to tell. If nothing pops up, I'll be here. Drop in and see me - I'll make popcorn. I may even have a few beers in the frig and I'll be happy to share!

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 4:40:19 PM | I've been living in the same house since 1994 ... it's pathetic ... nobody brings their children trick-or-treating ... there are very few little children here in the neighborhood and the few little ones there are ... are mostly taken to their grandparents' houses for parties ...
the house before this one was GREAT ... 100s of cute little kids ... they'd come tripping up the walk ... want to see my chow ... "trick-or-treat! where's BEAR?!" that was fun! Bear loved little children and they loved him!
it's gotten to how I don't even waste my time or money buying candy! I have a pile of quarters if any kiddles should come by! I certainly don't want a bunch of candy sitting around MY house, tempting me to eat 'em!
(incidentally, I just realized, if not for the whole divorce thing ... today would have been our 35th wedding anniversary! )

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 4:58:41 PM | Well, I just got back from taking the grand kiddies trick or treating. It's amazing how few houses are lit up, compared to when I was younger or even when my daughter was younger. These kids definitely EARNED their candy, wth all the up hill, down hill walking we did...and it was good exercise for ME!
If I didn't have my family around me, I would probably be more of a hermit during these Holidays...but they put the FUN back into it!!! I saw a lot of people my age giving out candy and really getting into it....so they aren't ALL giving up, although they may have family around that keeps them into it, too.
Oh yeah...it was even RAINING...well, drizzling!
OP, we SAW you....BOO! (Thought you'd get away with it, huh?)

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 5:20:19 PM | I hear ya Geezer Glide - just me and my dog Bosco. We may get trick or treaters and sometimes they remind me of my grandkids that live in Austin. Makes me sad. What will I do - well I have already reset the clocks so I am not early for work tomorrow.
Holidays are the absolute worst - I spend time with my sister and her husband, but I always feel like the 3rd wheel and I don't want to interfer in their couples time. I read alot, play on the computer, cross-stitch, catch an old episode of Law and Order just to keep my mind occupied and keep myself from getting depressed.
It is hard being in this situation so I tell myself to "buck up" cause at least I am a healthy, relatively happy, 52 year old. This isn't the life I ordered but it is the one I got, so got to hang in there and make the best of what life has to offer.

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 5:44:40 PM | Lights are on....
Plenty of candy in the big wooden bowl....
but no little ghosts or goblins have shown up yet!
Guess they all went to Nichols Hills to trick or treat!
Hummm may as well pop some corn and find something good to watch.

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 5:57:17 PM | | It was a good night here, fewer kids than usual but the ghastly crew at our house made at least a dozen or so cry... and a bunch too afraid to come to the house. What is halloween if there isn't at least ONE house in the neighborhood you're too afraid to go to? | |

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 5:59:05 PM | 5:30 p.m. here ... and I just got FOUR TRICK-or-TREATERS!!! the littlest one was about 3, dressed as either an angel or a fairy ... couldn't tell for sure ... no halo and wings so I'm guessing fairy ... the next was maybe 6 dressed as a princess ... and about a 7-year-old with a totally painted red face as a devil ... and another 7-year-old but I don't know WHAT he was! lots of bandages, "blood" and "gore" !!! I gave them each a quarter ... cuz I hadn't bot candy ...
CUTE KIDS! told 'em not to put the quarters in their mouths! just to be on the safe side!

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 5:59:45 PM | well.. I'll be going to the movies with my sister in law and her family... pretty lame but it's better than staying home. And I'm not interested in the world series this year.. should have been the dodgers and yankees.. lololo
as for thanksgiving. My girls and I will spend with my other sister in law. Both of my sister in laws are married to brothers of my ex. Funny..We spend all of the holidays with them. Married 30 yrs so they are part of me. I have also done the kids halloween tradition and I'm glad I'm done.. it was fun though!!
Happy Halloween and enjoy your evening !

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 6:44:15 PM | | My son moved in just down the street about 12 years ago. For the last 10 years I have posted a sign on my front door telling the kids to go to my son's address to get double treats. I hand out the double treats at his place while he and his wife take their 4 kids out trick-or-treating around the neighbourhood, along with their cousins who also live nearby. This year their dog insisted on going out with them as well! A lighter turnout than last year, but still lots of enthusiastic kids. The little ones were especially fascinated by the talking Goblin with glowing eyes and flapping wings sitting on the front doorstep; it was as tall as them! | |

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 7:56:20 PM | I was right - not a single kid tonight. Partly it's because the stores in town give out candies early before they close, so the kids go there. I think one of the schools has a haunted house, too. Doesn't seem like as much fun as when I was a kid, we used to head out as soon as supper was over and hit every house within walking distance. Then the town where I lived in Alaska went all out for Halloween - all the clerks, teachers, office workers, everyone, got dressed up in costumes and had potlucks. Then the kids took over the early part of the evening, and later, all the bars had parties with everyone in costumes. Some people started planning for the next year before Thanksgiving.
Now, it's me and the critters. And a big bowl full of candies that I will eventually end up eating, and need to work off.

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 8:50:48 PM | Finally had some had some trick or treaters come through between 8:30 and 9:00. You know, the ones that don't give up until all the lights are turned out....
Heard my 9 yo grandson went into a haunted house by himself, thinking he was big enough to go alone, but a couple of minutes later was seen dashing out the exit, running in the wrong direction. His dad had to head him off at the pass and get him turned around but he was all through with trick or treating after that. He said no more haunted houses for him E V E R again!
He had a pumpkin full of treats so he was happy.

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 9:12:43 PM | Went out tonight and sort of had a good time,,,
Mostly women were in costume,,,
Have to say I noticed a very common theme with most of the costumes,,,
Appears to be a night when some can act out alter egos without being called bi-polar or a closet "bad girl"

will finish the night solo,,, -big sigh-

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 10:56:06 PM | First Halloween in like 25 years that I shut down the house...turned off the lights. No 25 jack o lanterns carved.. no ghosts from the tree, spiders and skeletons hanging from the windows... no fancy lanterns lit all over the yard.
Yup.. I use to be a regular Martha Stewart for Halloween.
this might be the last year my girls go out trick or treating....so that is what I did... we bundled up.... it didn't rain thank goodness...we walked and walked...talked... had a lovely evening.... and were done by 8:00pm... and went out for pizza. Drop them off at their Dad's for the night.
home alone....to open that bottle of red wine or not?... don't know...wish I had date foresure...would be nice. It's only 11pm here PST.... night is still young.

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 10/31/2009 11:30:23 PM | there were a lot of fun things going on around here. ozomatli played last nite at the catalyst and went there on a match date. one guy was walking downtown in his costume: a jack strap. his girl, wore just pasties. nobody blinked an eye. that is where i live! came home after food shopping at midnite, talked all nite to the housemate, cooked and cleaned until 5:30 am. so today, i'm tired. tomorrow some more peaceful things planned.
there was a singles and professional dance, a meetup singles dance, my favorite band at a nearby club, friends going downtown to watch the supposedly nonexistent parade. the town has no money, but that doesn't stop the people!
part of me felt i "should" go and the other part of me is grateful for what else is going on in my life and with flu season and all, i was too tired. so, my match date stayed home, my housemate stayed home, one ex stayed home and the other ex went downtown. my one single female friend went up to san francisco. she says it's boring here!
i bought the candy, but no kids tricking or treating around here. too bad, some of you have nothing going on. here, there is always something going on--it makes me feel i can follow my biorythmns and not worry about this being my only chance to socialize. besides, i am kind of liking my match date! i just go slow but sure and have a hilarious time laughing in between.
oh, i have also spent the last week trying to humanely catch a rat in my crawl space. have two ex's working on ideas,or trying to help me, but they think i'm nuts. the match date is more sympathetic! all the people in the automotive and lighting store, et al have helped me to cut out and design my latest "thought". i have several different traps going and found a place in china that has what i wanted. i saw their english translation was poor and offered to help them. so, that is part of today as well. i think HP sent the rat, so i could help the people in china. i just wish s/he would go now. named it "exodus" and hopefully not "exodi". for some, this is scarey!!! so, that goes with halloween as well. lolololololololol (cross out help, write in boo!)

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 11/1/2009 1:31:32 AM | being one of the few adults that dresses up every year at the elementary school I work at, I had my fun Friday all decked out as a pirate wench. I live on a cul-de-sac and I didn't hear a single trickster come down my way, so, perhaps Halloween forgot our street this year, and I live in a busy Los Angeles city!
for some reason, all holidays or days of significance of any kind that I spend alone seem to haunt me into feeling melancholy.
I must be getting old. | |

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 11/1/2009 1:40:04 AM | just got in from a great party, had a wild dance partner who was dragging me around by my tie, I was dressed as a cop...met a solid business conection to boot...no tv plus getting out= | |
|
| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 11/1/2009 9:46:39 AM | well ... I feel pleased with myself at having lived thru yet another holiday alone without my grandchildren ... I miss the grandchildren as much as I miss having a "mate"!!
those were the only 4 trick-or-treaters! they were cute ... very happy shining little faces beaming at me!
one year when we lived in Santa Cruz, California and I was in about the 3rd grade, one little girl's father escaped from somewhere (I was little, remember?) ... maybe prison ... the little girl's name was Margaret and her father was considered very dangerous ... Margaret was scared and very embarrassed about the entire thing ... apparently her father had vowed to get his little girl ...
Santa Cruz was a very sleepy little town back then ... very open and friendly where everyone seemed to know everyone else ...
but we had uniformed police stationed all over school ... there were policemen coming into each of the classes, trying to tell us how to avoid "bad people" without scaring us to death ... I remember one who demonstrated a homemade "handcuff" ... made from baling wire ... I thot it was a pretty scary situation ...
most parents would have cancelled Halloween ... but ... not our parents! we got our very own policeman assigned to go trick-or-treating with us ... it was great fun ... there were maybe 10 of us from our neighborhood ... and everywhere we went, we had this uniformed policeman with us ... we met several other uniformed policemen along the way with other groups of kids ...
there was one ranch we'd go to every year with a huge wooden gate across the driveway and a long path to the house ... and the man had ghosts hanging from trees ... we'd yell, "trick or treat!" from the street ... and he'd yell back at us, "don't you derned kids come onto my property! this here's private property ... you kids better stay in the street!" then we'd rattle the big wooden gate and he'd yell some more and "shoot at us!" our cop yelled back at him ... "this is Officer ... and you better knock that off!" but we told him it was only a game! (I thot it was a game! we did it every year!)
now THAT was a Halloween to remember! the year that Santa Cruz City Police Department took us all trick-or-treating!!!

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 11/1/2009 2:52:50 PM | I certainly don't want anyone to get the wrong impression, here! No, I didn't sit home alone feeling sorry for myself and drinking myself into a stupor!
Well, I did sit home alone, waiting for the dang rain to stop, so the game would start, and watch the Phillies dress up as losers for the night. But I only had one beer....honest! I had a meeting to get up early for this morning!
But, I did have two trick-or-treaters! Batman stopped by, along with a little miniature cop, complete with handcuffs.
Back when I was teaching, sometime in the dark ages, I would dress up for the parties at school. Since I was an elementary school band director, I didn't have a homeroom, so...no party. I could dress up and then go and crash all the classroom parties. And occasionally, if my band was playing on Halloween, I'd dress up, too. Back in the '80s when I had long hair, and less weight, a little red dye in the hair made me into a pretty good Willie Nelson!

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 11/1/2009 3:03:41 PM | We're sitting here and talking about us,,,
Nobody I've talked to or even here typing has said there were a lot of trick or treaters,,, What the he11 happened to them? Nice night (or late afternoon here 5:00 to 7:00) and hardly anyone,,,

| Sitting solo on a scary Saturday (Halloween) Posted: 11/1/2009 3:06:53 PM | I have small kids so we were out and about, begging for treats, took one of their friends along as well. There were lots of kids out,, they were so neat to watch.. We ended the night at McDs for happy meals, then home to sort the candy. Today we cut our huge pumpkin, kept the seeds to roast and cooked him.. Now we have bags of pumpkin puree for holiday pies all stored away in the freezer.. Yumm.. We've had a great Halloween week-end!
