Organ donation - Opt-in or Opt-out?

Traveller: True. It's the disease not the lack of spare parts. I'll give you that one. OK, half a point... :)

So far as the cards, the one you sent in may be valid if it was not done as an attachment to your drivers' licence. Most people still think those little stickers are still valid. (no!)

If a kid can get a drivers' licence, I figure they should be able to decide what to do with their organs if they crash. Or - leave it to 18 - voting age - or 19, drinking age. But where else would they be en masse to distribute the cards? ... and not everyone has a drivers' licence. So yeah, awareness and registration is an issue. A huge issue.

I also agree with your point that surgical technology will make future transplants more efficient and successful so there may be more opportunities/demand for transplant. Interesting angle. Thanks.

Once again, kudos to Traveller for his eloquently posted opinion.

To You go first

As someone who lost a spouse due to the stupidity of the current organ donor system...

If you ride a motorcycle - donor.

... or... if it were your spouse/child/parent dying because some perfectly healthy idiot on a motorcycle crashed and was brain dead but didn't have a signed donor card with the potential to affect up to 9 other lives...

Don't get me wrong, I am empathetic to your loss, I truly am, but as I happen to operate a motorcycle I take offence at your posts.

Your comments are compelling me to seriously consider creating a label which I will affix to my drivers licence, to advise any medical responder that I have opted out. It may not be official but should make my intent clear to any one chomping at the bit to have my organs.

BE - knowing you from your posts, I would not expect you would be riding a crotch rocket like an idiot. (I've seen way too many of those in my line of work, though.)

Although I didn't coin the phrase 'donorcycles', it is sadly true that the majority of the donors are young men who have been injured in various accidents, some of which involve motorcycles. (living donors excluded)

i'm pro donation, and figure once i'm done with them, it really doesn't matter to me how my various body parts are re-cycled... transplants, research(serious or other) or just plain compost. i'm not going to know the difference.

there's valid points for both in and out. i think someone mentioned having to give an answer when you get a driver's license, why not expand it to all government issued id... passports, dl's, etc?

Thank you for your post.

You are correct in your belief that I don't ride a "crotch rocket" style of motorcycle. Motorcycles come in a variety of styles and their operators vary widely too. For example while I am admittedly a motorcyclist, the label "biker" would not fit me at all.

Activities present varying levels of risk and some activities are far too risky for me, including riding a crotch rocket and jumping out of airplanes.

no way! they get NOTHIN' by god - the next thing you know, you've choked on a peanut, fallen down and hit your face on a table (Pres. Bush did it!) and two guys in not-so-clean white coats are rushing in with a blood-soaked gurney waiting to pluck you up and harvest your organs...p.s. mine are saturated in Cadbury Mini-Eggs so feck off...

Opt-in for me. I am all for donating! The idea of someone chopping me up without my permission first, is down right creepy!

^You would not feel a thing. I have never been dead before but my guess is that you do not feel it when someone is chopping you up.

I think by not opting out you have given consent.

I leave towards opt-out, but there are good reasons not to do that. Guess I'm basically fence-sitting. But seeing this thread reminded me that I want to donate my remains to science, so I logged on to website and did that.
