| Election '09 tests not boding well for Obama Posted: 11/4/2009 12:31:14 PM | I found this article at thedailybeast.com about the NY23 race and its implications. What makes it interesting is the underlying civil war raging in the Republican Party between the moderates and the hard right of the party.
The official Republican candidate, Dede Scozzafava, had dropped out days before and thrown her support to Owens after the conservative movement backed Hoffman in a campaign to destroy her, attacking her as a closet socialist with a cynical, hidden agenda—the same terms they have used to demonize President Barack Obama.
Hoffman’s rejection by rank-and-file voters in a solidly Republican district dampened the conservatives’ mood on an otherwise upbeat night and raised serious questions about the movement’s attempt to purge moderates from party ranks. Now, many of Hoffman’s right-wing cheerleaders are struggling to explain their dubious gambit, while others fear repercussions for their zealotry.
Hoffmans only qualification for this race was being a hard right ideologue. He had no knowledge of local issues but the conservatives parachuted him in to run anyway.
With endorsements from the National Rifle Association, the National Republican Congressional Committee and Republican Party elders Newt Gingrich and New York Rep. Peter King, Scozzafava was assured an easy victory. Then Hoffman declared his candidacy on the Conservative Party line. Hoffman was a lawyer and Tea Party activist who did not live in the district and, according to the local Watertown Daily-Times, “showed no grasp of the bread-and-butter issues pertinent to district residents.” Offered as his only selling point: ideological purity.
Hoffman instantly became the point man for the national conservative movement, dedicating himself to fulfilling the right’s dream of a complete purge of moderate elements in the GOP. Campaigning in a local constituency of mostly Republican regulars, Hoffman behaved as though he were running in a presidential primary. He slammed Scozzafava for supporting abortion rights and gay marriage, substituting the hot button issues that had electrified the national Tea Party movement rather than the bread and butter concerns of the working class district he campaigned to represent.
Of course the right wing bloggers have tried to turn this into a victory. Notice how shocked the Democrats were to have won this, contrary to what one reality lapsed poster on this site believes.
In the wake of defeat, some of Hoffman’s enthusiastic backers attempted to spin his loss as a heroic moral victory. They included Erick Erickson, a popular blogger at the heavily trafficked right-wing blog, RedState.com. “This is a huge win for conservatives,” Erickson declared. “…we did exactly what we set out to do – crush the establishment backed GOP candidate.”
Besides Erickson, only Democrats seemed to be celebrating the news. “A Democrat close to the administration could only say: ‘Holy f---ing sh--!’ over and over when I called for comment [about Owens’ victory],” reported Elizabeth Benjamin of the New York Daily News

| Election '09 tests not boding well for Obama Posted: 11/4/2009 12:38:50 PM | Oh, but you just know that someone here is going to bring up poll results in less than a year showing that the Democratic incumbent is going to lose in 2010.
It's a safe Republican seat - they're just not completely delusional. A rational Republican will win the seat handily next year. That is, if they haven't purged the party of all rational individuals by then.

As long as there are people out there with this type of attitude our country is screwed. So by rational you mean someone who agrees with the Liberals?...you know like killing babies, big government, amnesty, gay marriage and wealth redistribution.....
So there should be no opposition? You must be a fan Of Chavez too....

| Election '09 tests not boding well for Obama Posted: 11/4/2009 1:20:19 PM | No. I mean someone who is rational.
Smart and rational people can be anti-choice, or oppose gay marriage, or anything you hold dear. But, if you're just following the dogma of Rush, then you've surrendered your judgement. A rational human being will never agree with the whole dogma. Same as a rational human being won't agree with Stalin's dogma. And for the exact same reasons - they've been tried and don't work.

Like killing babies? You mean like President Bush did when he illegally invaded Iraq, I almost forgot he not only killed babies he killed innocent men, women and children. Big Government? Lets see maybe you perfer big business? I thought we were the government don't we elect those who represent us? Redistribution of wealth? Did you mind when President Reagan gave the rich a tax cut?
Chavez? Is he the guy that supplied fuel oil to the poor of the USA, is that the guy?
Back on topic, now we have two govenors who have 11 months to show what they can do with an economy that is in the tank, my quess nothing but it's good especially here in NJ where the new republican govenor is going to cut taxes, you know the guy who said he would not accept stimulis money, we will see the truth before the senate elections

It's the attack of the strawmen army! Big government is simply whoever you didn't vote for. Wealth redistribution is what happens whenever deregulation wipes out everyone's savings. And didn't opposition become unpatriotic after 9/11?

| Election '09 tests not boding well for Obama Posted: 11/4/2009 2:02:56 PM | You know when I checked that box that made me a Democrat,I had no idea we were into baby killing, ohhhhhhh your talking ones right to an abortion,so its whether we think you have rights and you don't think we do,got it.
Big Government, well its always been big government, think the question is,is it good government, well it sure had not been, heck thats why most this country is scared to death of government, sure after a dictator it makes ya cautious, luckily Obama proves he's for good government, that why he will not allow anything like it was.
Amnesty, yes there are places that applies and other places we feel if they just cut out the miles and miles of red tape,a person could just sign up for working in this country so they didn't have to sneek in it and then amnesty would have never been needed in the first place.Until you realize how impossible the current forms are then you don't understand the magnitude of the problem. Please all of you raise your hands if you have read a set of forms for say Mexico.Guess its ok for us to hop on a plane and freely fly the world, but if its particular countries we need to see just how freakin hard and sometimes impossible we can make it for them.Oh thats that Big government.see thats the old ways of how bad government could possibly if they tried, and they tried hard too.
An example ,1990, my workmate Marta who married Martin wanted Marta's parents to come and visit them, that went on for months until my boss who had connections got a hold of the Mayor who said lets get a hold of my friend Senator Hatfield, and the Senators secretary wrote an impassioned letter and that allowed Marta's parents to visit for the week.Seems because Marta's parents could not adequately prove to our government that they actually only wanted to visit not move here, their application was turned down each time, seems Marta's parents only proof as to why they would come back was only that they owned two retail stores and one rental home and one personal homes in Mexico and ofcourse all the employees of their two stores. To all of us ,it seemed if the Senator had not wrote a letter it would not have happened.Tell me is this what all of you go through when you book a trip to Mexico, certainly not !
Gay marriage, there you go again trying to take away peoples rights just because you and I are not into gay,its not our personal choice, you think it should be disallowed,I say bull, they are people like anyone else and are entitled to anything any other marriage affords you.Your a gay hater!
wealth redistribution, hmmm,Warren Buffet says its should be,and its only fair.So you think the trickle down(if your lucky)is the best this country can offer, enough said !

| Election '09 tests not boding well for Obama Posted: 11/4/2009 3:17:14 PM | Seems that there were some valuable lessons learned by all from the WH down to the voter.
It will be interesting how the WH and elected congressional official use the lessons learned from last night; Democrats and Republicans alike.
Analysis: Election lessons will shape '10 WASHINGTON – What we learned from the off-year elections: The president's influence is limited, independents rule, incumbents beware, issues trump ideology and, once more, "It's the economy, stupid." Also: Republicans can win — even if they lack a leader and their base is cracked. And this certainly isn't the Democratic-friendly political environment of 2006 and 2008 when the party captured control of Congress and the White House. The first Election Day of Barack Obama's presidency was a big night for Republicans, who recaptured governorships in the swing state of Virginia and the Democratic stronghold of New Jersey. Democrats won two races for vacant congressional seats, including one in upstate New York that had been long held by Republicans and that exposed a GOP divide. So, what did we learn about politics, people and their priorities from the handful of races on Tuesday? And how will those lessons shape the maneuvering of Republicans and Democrats ahead of 2010 midterms, when Obama's prestige will be put to the test across the country? The results don't seem to bode well for Obama and his party heading into a high-stakes year as they look to advance an expensive domestic agenda while protecting the Democrats' grip on House, Senate and gubernatorial seats nationwide. They'll try to win over people in a country clouded by a job-killing recession, divided over war and, as Tuesday's results showed, fed up with the powers that be — no matter the political party. campaignhttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091104/ap_on_an/us_election_what_we_learned_analysis
At the end of the above Article it lists and talks about in detail 5 lessons to be learned. For more details of the learned please refer to the article. Among the lessons learned: _OBAMA'S POLITICAL POWER IS LIMITED _IN_ DEPENDENTS ARE KINGMAKERS _INCUMBENTS BEWARE _ISSUES TRUMP IDEOLOGY; THE ECONOMY TRUMPS ALL _2006 AND 2008 ARE GONE; REPUBLICANS CAN WIN
