| LOL! Posted: 11/6/2009 9:00:31 AM | I was thinking more of my sarcasm, which gets misunderstood in texts eg. I might say "I'll try to fit you in to my busy schedule"
I assume that they'll know I was joking, that there is no busy scedule, but they may just think I'm snooty or not really interested. etc. (Yes, I know, you should never assume anything!) I have had texts misunderstood many times, there is no way of knowing "how" a person says stuff.... Having just revisited the 'Brainy women' thread I have to say, good point well made.

"Naff" has been around since the 19th century, meaning poor taste or kitsch - you know, those houses and gardens covered in Christmas lights, or garden gnomes - they're all naff, I never really realised Porridge used it as a euphemistic verb!
They had garden gnomes and Xmas lights in the 1800's?? You really DO learn something new every day.
| LOL! Posted: 11/6/2009 9:10:33 AM | I always thought LOL was simply used to let the other person know they are laughing. Surely it would be pointless to say LOL to someones face as they can already see you're laughing.
"oh hahhaha hahah lawwll, im really lollling out loud now!!"
Stop this, you plonker.
| LOL! Posted: 11/6/2009 9:42:04 AM | | I use it to indicate humour or when I really do find something funny. Ive never heard it spoken though. Ive seen people write mwaah or something like that which I think is weird because Ive never heard anyone laugh like that. | |
| LOL! Posted: 11/6/2009 9:52:11 AM | ^^^^^^
"Mmmmwoooah! Mmmwoah! Sweetie, Sweetie" - apologies to Patsy and Edina.
"Mmmmmwwwoooah!" Is an onomatopoeic (in its various spellings) for a blown 'air kiss' as used in Ab Fab, by Chelsea Tractor drivers to each other, etc etc.
So someone was sending you kissy-wissies and you didn't realise? (LOL!)
| LOL! Posted: 11/6/2009 10:11:15 AM | I've never heard anyone say the word "lol" when speaking .....I tend to use it to show that what I've typed is said in humour or with tongue in cheek.......I sometimes PMSL but you don't need to know about my stress incontinence on this particular thread | |
| LOL! Posted: 11/6/2009 11:39:20 AM | | couple of weeks ago a a bristol radio station did a survey for fun, and found more people use LOL as laugh out loud rather then LOL lots of love silly I know but it was funny. | |
| LOL! Posted: 11/6/2009 12:28:07 PM | | It's a common thing that appears in my inbox, I have had countless reply messages with just "lol" and "haha" in. The reason is because these people are boring and don't know what else to say | |
| LOL! Posted: 11/6/2009 1:14:31 PM |

| LOL! Posted: 11/6/2009 1:21:51 PM | | got to be fair never use it never write in text just cant understand what people are saying if your going to write something do it as your suppose to. | |
| LOL! Posted: 11/6/2009 1:37:30 PM | | lol is a common acronym. Used in texts, emails, Instant Messaging and the like, it is short for 'I lack imagination and/or the confidence to end this sentence and am desperately trying to make myself sound interested/interesting' | |
| LOL! Posted: 11/6/2009 1:53:36 PM | Its addictive, once you use it you can stop even if its not funny lol sometimes I use it when i don't I know what to say. | |

That's a bit snooty. Like any word it loses meaning when used too often, but otherwise I think it's fine.
| LOL! Posted: 11/7/2009 3:24:27 AM | | Hate it with a passion, as I have said on my profile 'it's lazy & for the under 20's' | |
| LOL! Posted: 11/7/2009 1:03:49 PM | ''i tend to use it only when dealing with persons not overly endowed on the intelligence front, as it lets them know when i am employing things like irony for example, which can be a troublesome intellection for katie price fans and others of low IQ.'' I gather that wasn't irony as the thick people on this thread might not have got it, there was no LOL on the end! What an utter snob! | |
| LOL! Posted: 11/7/2009 1:36:33 PM | I thought it stood for "Lots Of Lager". | |
| LOL! Posted: 11/7/2009 1:59:13 PM | haha......I have never heard it used in conversation And the first time I encountered it in text/email I thought the writer was shortening my name from Lorraine to Lol !! Bit of a senior moment there LOLOLOLOL | |
| LOL! Posted: 11/7/2009 2:06:13 PM | thought it stood for laugh out loudly
but nevermind me, i much prefer lmao myself.
| LOL! Posted: 11/7/2009 5:26:27 PM | I agree it can be a safety issue to let someone know you are joking especially when you are and if you are sarcastic like me then its a handy tool.
talking of that ..the think that irritates me more is
yes hun fine hun how s you hun... that says to me you spend way to much time online talking to people who also call you hun haha
what kind of conversation is that
| LOL! Posted: 11/8/2009 2:46:36 AM | Yes i agree I hate that too - 'How's you hun?' ...it really is cringe worthy and puts me off immediately, it brings out the worst in me....... | |
| LOL! Posted: 11/8/2009 4:56:30 AM |
I now hear people using ‘LOL’ in conversation – is it now part of the language?
If people are using LOL in verbal conversation, that's wierd.
If you mean they are using it in online communication, I think it is just meant to indicate a humorous reaction to what is being written. I don't think people actually mean to imply they are laughing out loud.

Im glad I wasnt the only one that thought that. Why bother to post on these forums with an attitude like that. You're obviously far too superior duke
| LOL! Posted: 11/8/2009 5:38:12 AM | | my head LOL's to one side when drunk................ | |
| LOL! Posted: 11/8/2009 8:12:21 AM | ''lol and text speak in general can in some instances be a good thing actually, as it can be a clear indication that you are conversing with persons of a more chavy persuasion. let's be honest, chav's are a bit like people who have contracted a very contagious incurable disease, in other words they are to be avoided in the main. a message such as: 'hi gawjus how r ya hun?' can often be a reliable indicator that the women who sent it will only be worth entertaining if she is great looking and worth a quick... look.''
In those instances it's probably better to be a chav and be blissfully unaware that the person you extended the hand of friendship/courtship too is looking down his haughty nose at you, being markedly more intelligent and superior must require the use of subordinates in order to support that self elected view of godliness!!! However I am a self confessed hypocrite and if anyone says 'hows you hun', to me, i will gladly offer them a few chavlike retorts of my own.......or does everyone say 'f' off???
| LOL! Posted: 11/11/2009 12:20:18 PM | When used in a profile headline ......'Super Woman L.O.L.' what's he trying to say? | |
