As far as Im aware this case has not been before any court, until then his motives will not be known, or his reasoning at present all we have to go on is press reports, which are not necessarily accurate or true.

I for one can't remember hearing of soldiers not being sent to Northern Ireland because they were Catholics or Proddies maybe too much is being made of his name.

he isnt a front line soldier & wasnt in US Army to fight but as a "army psychiatrist "
& had since 9/11 stated strongly opposed his deployment to fight muslims and had wanted to leave the army & offered to pay his way out !
No 1 is defending what he has done , people are saying please dont judge Islam & Muslims on what hes done esp as he looks like he's been pushed over the edge ! | |

Thats a very bold statement to make, much like saying every Irish person named O'donnell is an IRA supporter. Maybe he had personal problems? a history of depression? it could be many triggers I think we should wait to find out the reasons before assuming anything.
I'm unsure why you're saying well done mac but then agreeing with my point whereas matt was disagreeing with it? could you explain further please as I'm a little confused. Thank you :) | |

I thought my point was clear.
To simplify:-
The OP was concerned when he saw the name Nidal Hasan because it suggested a certain religion.
Soldiers were not stopped being sent into Northern Ireland conflict because they were of one of the faiths involved. Not a point I have seen made previously on this thread.
I agreed with Mac's statement that having a CRB check in no way suggests that someone is a pedophile.
This is a debating thread……….

My confusion was because as I've previously pointed out I raised the issue of not judging someone by a surname/faith or excluding them on that basis, you seem to agree so there isn't anything to debate is there?

If someone is a Muslim, or from a Muslim family, then it is sensible to ask if they would have a problem serving as part of an army of occupation in a Muslim country. It seems only fair to the person involved. I am sure will will hear much more about this US situation in the coming days that will make many of our comments redundant.
However, I recall some years ago, immediately after the British Muslim convert (Robert Reed?) tried to set light to his shoe bombs on a flight to the USA (and was prevented by some quick thinking fellow passengers) all airlines started testing shoes for explosives "at random" on every flight.
I was travelling on business in the USA at that time and somehow it turned out that I (the only one with a British passport) was tested every single time!
Was I offended? No way!
Did I think it was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction? Yup!
The offender was British (and had a very low IQ, as I recall) but the testers, with no other guidance or clues to go on, decided that any Brits should be tested. Were they prejudiced? Perhaps! But I cannot help recalling that when I lived in London in to 70's and was too damn close for my liking to three IRA bombs, if I was in a pub and heard Irish accents, I would always make damn sure that when those people got up and left, I would take a good look at where they had been sitting to see if they had left any bags or packages behind. Seemed like common sense to me at the time! | |

Why? He joined the US Army, therefore he swore an oath to serve his country. The role of a soldier is, after all, to follow orders.
I don't see why his being Muslim is such a big issue.

At Fort Hood since first deployment to Afghanistan, 79 service personal have taken thier own lives while on base ?
This is no reason for what Nidal Hasan has done but as a "army psychiatrist" plus a a muslim he'll have listened to the "horror storys" by those returning soldiers,
& then to be told he is being sent there ! God only knows what was running though his mind !
Also during the day he was seen walkinga imlessly around the camp giving personal items away !!
to me there is alot more to this other than Hasan being Muslim ! | |

Hood is the Armys treatement centre for thiose with PTSD, not suprising that its here that the vulnrable to self harm do so.

Enough said i think.
Yes quite enough factualy incorrect input from you, the female officer put him down with 4 body shots leaving him in a critical condition, despite being hit herself.
