No, the music industry execs don't pick bands based on who sucks. They pick based on who makes MONEY. If people want to listen to Britney Spears or Kesha singing about getting drunk and sleeping around to a drum machine, then they will invest in those artists.
Here's an example. The guys in a band like Dream Theater are clearly better musicians than guys in bands like Nickelback or Theory of a Deadman. The bottom line is that more people want to hear simple, straight forward music than technical, heavier music. They want music that can be played at a bar, a strip club, a school dance, a hockey game, etc.
Music with time signature changes, complex rhythms and melodies, etc aren't as catchy and don't appeal to a wide audience. What's "better" or "worse" is just personal taste. I can tell you my favourite singer is Britney Spears and everyone else sucks, because it's all based on personal opinion. But who gets signed is based on who sells and public demand. It has nothing to do with talent, musicianship, creativity, or anything along those lines.\

that's a joke right? someone has got to be joking if they rank green day in any positive list

| Overrated Bands. Posted: 3/3/2012 4:59:57 PM | | Green Day were the band that was willing to sell out and sign on the major label dotted line at a time when the major labels knew punk could be marketable (mainly due to Nirvana). Nothing more, nothing less. There were better bands that refused to and there were worse bands that followed in Green Day's footsteps. The majority of them are in the "where are they now?" files.....Anyone remember Butt Trumpet? | |
|
| Overrated Bands. Posted: 3/4/2012 12:39:39 AM | | I actually think Green Day is a pretty good band. They're consistent and they write good songs. Selling out isn't as bad as it sounds. It's like a restaurant deciding to cook food that will have enough appeal to fill the restaurant every day. You can be stubborn and only cook what you feel like cooking, but if people aren't paying for it, how do you stay open? The bottom line is that the guys in Green Day would be working day jobs right now if they didn't more their sound accessible to a wide audience. That's why I can't really fault any group for selling out. | |

I agree that I would rather see System of a Down over U2. I'm not a huge fan of the Rolling Stones, but it's very impressive that they are still playing together. Most bands fight and go through line up changes within a year or two. I wasn't never big into the Beatles either but I can respect them as song writers. I always thought AC DC were mediocre. I guess their vocals is what people remember. No one else really yells the whole time like they're in pain.

(1)Footnote: These guys have a lot of energy and emotion into their music. Some good songs include Mairi Mac and Ordinary Day.

| Overrated Bands. Posted: 3/14/2012 7:08:26 PM | Well there are a lot out there, but the one that came to my mind atm are Kings of Leon. I remember when "Use Somebody" came out, people starting freaking out.......but while the music was found, i kind of found the hype annoying. Especially when the band is so unstable personally[breaking up, getting back together, and so on], and complains about having to sing popular songs too much after only a few months, like they've been touring for decades or something.
Meh. If i think of another one i'll pop back in!

maybe because people lie? to appear more 'cool'? they say what they are expected to say by peer pressure?
I note that no-one ever admits to eating at McDonald's yet they always appear packed.. & the sign keeps adding so many "X" billions to the "number served"
"everyone" always say they don't really watch TV, yer Nielsen ratings tell a different story. people say things like " I never watch TV -but did you see "XXXX" ("Reality Show "X"" on ABC last night" ? lol
basically, people tend to be full of sh1t..

I just made a few posts explaining these points. What makes money and what is popular is not based on musicianship or talent, it's based on marketability and investment. I hate to spam the forum by repeating myself, but basically what I was saying is that Nickelback has a career because there is a market for the music they make. And just like there are people willing to pay thousands of dollars for a painting on a red circle on a blue background, it doesn't need to be good to have mass appeal. If you look at the lyrics for the popular club songs right now, they are mostly things like "baby, I wanna take you home, make sweet lovin', dance all night" etc. It's nothing you would sit down and read as a poem. But that being said, clubs are playing the music, people are dancing to it, and people are buying the albums. It's the same story for the music. There are more talented musicians and songwriters than the guys in Nickelback, but the demand for what they do is high, so the labels invest large amounts of money in them. If suddenly, 99% of the population only wanted to hear jazz music, Nickelback would cease to have a career, regardless of their level of talent.

| Overrated Bands. Posted: 3/27/2012 1:00:27 PM | | How the **** is Rush overhyped? Your talking about a band that has never been on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine and has not been on one Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ballad yet has sold millions and millions of albums.s. As far as the song writing goes, I can't think of another band that can so elqeuntly bring attention to subjects like the hollocaust ( Red Sector A) and government overreach ( Red Barchetta) or the wonders of the natural world ( Natural Science). They have had a least 7 or 8 albums that have been incredibley influnetial to throngs of musicians. And the fact that you dont even mention that Alex Lifeson is one of the greatest rythm, lead guitarists EVER, shows me exactly how much you really know about music. And when you can find another band that can play what Rush plays with three guys.... you let me know chief. Stick to radio rock and leave the Prog Rock to people with the mental abillity to understand it. | |

I did read your explanations, but I guess what I'm not following isn't so much your comments, but how could there be a market? I know you probably can't answer that one, however.
I guess an awful lot of people just have crappy taste in music.
